Goodbye Alpha Male
I have told my buddy Pankration and Noviceaas about this piece that I have been working on and decided to post it even though I didn't take it as far as I wanted. All I keep hearing in my head is “moving forward in reverse”
I was watching a national Geographic show a while back. They were diving in an underwater cavern that was protected because there were these special fish. These fish had not seen sunlight in so long that this species no longer had eyes. Consider evolution being guided by environmental and external pressures, this fish no longer needs sight, so why should evolution preserve it? The eyes were a waste of energy and unnecessary.
On the Galapagos Island lives the flightless Cormorant. It has reduced its wings size and can no longer fly. You could argue that this is still evolution and call it the adaptation of species but some would call it “de-evolution or devolution”. The seriousness of this is that an ability that is lost could possibly be lost forever.
A misconception is that species evolve or change because they need to adapt to environmental demands. This is a fallacy called “teleology”. 99 percent of all species that ever lived are extinct. There is no requirement that species always adapt successfully. Another misconception is that increasing complexity is the necessary outcome of evolution. In fact, decreasing complexity is common in the record of evolution.
While writing this I keep reflecting on our worthy ancestors before the agricultural period and how freaking brutal and bad ass they must have been and their children learning how to survive at an early age. Now we all live in a box and our kids stay in the house with video games and suffer from ADD and other diagnosis that could possibly be turned on because of the Epigenetic Effect
Lets talk about the “Epigenetic Effect” : The term 'epigenetic', which literally means 'outside conventional genetics', is now used to describe the study of stable alterations in gene expression potential that arise during development and cell proliferation.

Now the Alpha Male... Aside from Sports, law enforcement or the Military I can’t think of a place for an alpha male, how many people do you know that have gotten great promotions and pay raises while they are some of the most unqualified illiterate people? Employers LOVE nut huggers. Companies love “Yes People” They don’t want an Alpha male, they want a yes man (A Dummy). I turn on the radio in my truck and the commercials are trying to dumb me down. And just in case I don’t think it’s funny the there is laughter after the punch line. Do you ever just listen to the TV and not watch it? A lot of the commercials and some shows are actors who act mildly retarded and there is also laughter to remind you when to laugh as well, programming you. I think the genetic alpha male expression is not being turned on. I think that we are "trying" to adapt to a society that is not normal for us and this is this why so many people are seeking mental health.
I would love to see this get heavy into some sociological, psychological concepts as well as political science

AnonYou know what? I'm going back to my original stance "Goodbye Alpha Male" because of something else that just came to mind.
Women are in Combat now. They can vote, They can smoke. They can raise a family without a man. They can bring home the bacon. Hell... Melissa Etheridge and other women are turning lesbian and the only thing they need is a sperm donor. If we are to compare ourselves to wolves, why aren't there any lesbian wolves?
I feel empty now like when I found out there wasn't a Santa Clause, tooth Fairy or Easter Bunny. Like the women who frequent online dating sites, looking for a "real man" and never find him. What the hell is a real man anyway? I picture him as the guy wearing the flannel shirt on a package of Brawny Paper towels.
Wait... There's no Easter Bunny?! You just ruined Easter for me dude!
It is the employers (Entrepreneurs/Shareholders) who are the alpha males never the employee. The alpha males/females of today are the ones creating the jobs not the ones taking them, to get promotions etc you have to better serve the alpha ie be a better beta...
AnonFirst of all thank you for posting. Second I made a mistake by even going into the alpha male, which I wish that I hadn't even mentioned now. I have since started thinking about the single mother who is raising children by herself. She gets off of work, picks the kids up, takes them to soccer practice, goes home, fixes dinner, washes clothes, cleans house, helps the kids with homework, tucks them in and does it all over again the next day. Now I think using the Alpha Male was pretty chauvinistic.
Quoting you: "It is the employers (Entrepreneurs/Shareholders) who are the alpha males never the employee"
I'll have to question you on this statement. The employers you speak of being the 'Alpha Males' Do they have an Ascribed Status' or an Achieved Status'?
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkYou're right the single mother would be number 1 by miles if we lived in a truly just world.
Way I see it is one persons alpha male is another's beta. Like for instance the alpha amongst navy seals is their commanding officer who's a beta to the master chief who himself is beta to say the general and so on.
Whether ascribed or achieved that depends on what level of alpha you're talking about. For the most part being high level alpha is achievable (eg Bill Gates, The President, Hitler) through hard work or genius. But to be at the very top, the alpha of alphas, that's bloodline territory unfortunately.
Anon"But to be at the very top, the alpha of alphas, that's bloodline territory unfortunately."
You are absolutely right Brother, that would be ascribed like Prince William or Prince Harry
Your motive was not to be chauvinistic, clearly in our talks we know that the term "Alpha" goes for both men and women. Also this topic is like a tree that grows more branches all part of the same tree. Take the case of the person who supplies the jobs, if for argument sake we call them alphas, and then someone comes and robs, them of everything they have, ties them up and puts them in a impotent situation. Has now a greater alpha come in and defeated them? This is just a question and I honestly do not know the answer but again as the situation dictates like Nitti said, it is a never ending discussion do to perspectives. That doesn't mean it is a bad thing as greater insight is attained through the discussion itself.
Perspectives indeed! You see, being alpha male is field dependent, our job creater for instance was an alpha of business and the guy who robbed him was an alpha of armed robbery. Have a face off between the robber and businessman in m&a then who's alpha. I'd say a good alpha scale would be the total number of people's lives you could affect directly and indirectly through the people you control down the hierarchy. Sure the robber could mess up a handful of people's lives including our job creator but our job creator could affect thousands of people even millions if say he caused a bearish indication on the Dow Jones!
Lol, lets call it the aggregated alpha scale
" I'd say a good alpha scale would be the total number of people's lives you could affect directly and indirectly through the people you control down the hierarchy. "
That right there is exactly my core perspective of being an alpha female or male! The provisional ability that creates adoration and loyalty. Rather than the tyranny of forced dominance.
AnonI remember telling my professor when I finished his class that I actually knew less after his class than I did before I started. He took all those beliefs that I held so close and destroyed them, leaving me with less than what I originally had. This is a frame of mind that Socrates is famous for... constantly being reminded just how little we know.
I never dreamed that we would be having these philosophical conversation on eroids and the intelligence of the people that have posted blows my mind. I was looking for answers and I found them but they are so complex that I can not grasp them. And like a tree they branch in another direction bringing on new thought provoking ideas.
I agree a lot of intelligent mofos on here. From all different backgrounds. I always said going to college does not mean you are getting educated and then I have met many others who never went to college but instead payed attention to the realities of life, and they could be professors in real life application of knowledge.
AnonI found an Alpha Male!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U18VkI0uDxE&feature=player_embedded#!
This is one bad mofo! Alien abductors have asked him to probe them! His blood smells like cologne!
http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/the-most-interesting-man-in-the-world
I love the debate and the insight you each bring to the table, but this could go on for days and only raise more questions. This is a chocolate vs vanilla argument. Since its about perspective YOU ARE ALL RIGHT! I have to bow out.
AnonNitti you are one of us and your input always has value.
I go out to the gym and I come back to all this deep introspective thought. It is interesting how this discussion is like looking at a house and describing it from one angle which is an accurate description. And yet the other angle is just as accurate only by putting all together do you get a greater picture of what the house looks like. For me the meaning of an "Alpha" that most intrigued me was the provisional and uniting quality. Meaning the ability to bring such unity of purpose that it creates an abundant provision for all who participate in the pack etc. I personally have always found my ego satisfied more by the accomplishment of the work rather than the praise that follows it. I also think all who love to lead, build, create, etc think that same way. It is an interesting concept between charisma & need, would one follow another if they believed they could get their needs fulfilled, or would it first require charisma to convince the person to follow to get their needs fulfilled? I am not sure of the answer, I have gone to a doctor before based on having a need, if the doctor was incompetent to help I then went to another for my need. In a wolf pack which I am not saying applies to this whole discussion only in reference to the "Alpha" in one setting, it is said that the wolves are drawn to the strength of the wolf that will best assure the packs survival. Is that based on charisma or strength or are they intertwined?
AnonOkay brother I have no answers, only questions.
1 are all navy seals alpha males?
2 were all the navy seals In seal team six who killed bin laden alpha males?
3 are alpha males able to work together as a united force to accomplish an objective?
4 are there times when an alpha male must bow down to someone who is not an alpha male because of the consequences? For instance, you get pulled over by some bad cop that has never accomplished anything and uses his badge to satisfy his ego by intimidating others.
The wolf is going to bite you he only knows there is a threat but as a human we have to swallow our pride because we know the consequences.
1." are all navy seals alpha males?" I don't know all Navy SEALs but I would say no. Only because of my definition and belief of what an alpha male is. Are they all strong, skilled, well trained, yes. But I knew guys and their personal lives did not reflect what I would consider an alpha male to be.
2 were all the navy seals In seal team six who killed bin laden alpha males? I don't know all of the members of team six. So I couldn't say, of the ones I do know I would say yes but not because they are team six SEALs.
3 are alpha males able to work together as a united force to accomplish an objective? In my experience as far as military operations I would say a resounding yes.
4 are there times when an alpha male must bow down to someone who is not an alpha male because of the consequences? For instance, you get pulled over by some bad cop that has never accomplished anything and uses his badge to satisfy his ego by intimidating others.
I would say yes again and here is why if it is what is best for the survival of the pack/family/unit then yes i could see an alpha male submit not out of fear or cowardice, but out of sacrifice for the good of the group.
I could go on in depth with this D, but I tired to keep the answers pithy and that is no small achievement for me lol.
AnonI am much more the believer that alphas are made more than born . There is undoubtedly a quality that people often posses from birth, but without the right guidance, pressure and experience it does not grow in to its full potential.
This topic is just so complex Im trying to think of it one part at a time.
So is Charisma a pre requisite for an alpha ? I tend to say 100% yes it is. You can not be an alpha if you do not have the type of charisma that makes others want to work for you, want to hear what you have to say, and ultimately elevate your self without making others feel lesser. The man who puts others down to make him self look better is not an alpha.
Now the question is do you learn to be charming and charismatic or are you born with it ? I tend to say you learn these skills along the way, but your instincts guide you .
I think you're reading too deeply and hanging onto that one word I used,...charisma. It's just a characteristic.Prerequisite? Not necessarily. If it's for the sake of argument, i'll play along. Of course you learn skills along the way while your instincts guide you. I don't disagree. I do not think you "learn" to be charismatic. And being an Alpha has absolutely nothing to do with making others feel inferior. Quite the contrary actually. I think you're talking about 2 different things here while using the OP's example of the "workplace".
AnonDo you think external pressures in our environment are trying to tone or dumb us down?
AnonNo Nitti, Im not hanging on that one word, I am taking this piece by piece . Whether you used that word or not, I assure you it would have been in one of my posts, because it is a crucial element to what we are discussing. Sure it is possible to be charismatic without being an alpha, but it is not possible to be an alpha without being charismatic .
I never said an apha has anything to do with making others feel inferior , re read what I wrote and I think you'll see that I say that is NOT an alpha quality.
I use that example because there are lots of people in positions of power, bosses, cops , whatever. I have seen many of them and their M.O. is to attempt to display their power by making you feel less . Where as a true alpha is able to have his position while making others feel better. The former being an example of someone who is insecure, and the later only possible when a person is completely secure, thus on his way to being an alpha.
AnonI love Nitti but I am going to have to agree with you on this one Novice.
AnonI have got to get off of here and get ready for work but you can look up what a "total institution" is.
I'll leave you with the "Degradation Ceremony" which is a humiliating or demeaning ritual that is performed inside total institutions. Any of you that were in the military remember the minute you stepped off the bus to begin your basic training. Your head was shaved and you were stripped of your individual identity. You were then indoctrinated to the ideas, attitudes and beliefs of the military. This is called "Resocialization" as previous patterns of behavior are replaced by newly learned behavior patterns.
Epigenetics would seem likely here. I'm not saying that the military is right for everyone but sometimes it has the ability to wake something up from deep inside a person. I have a young friend who just came back from Afghanistan and is having a hard time adjusting. He worked with us for 6 months and went back in. He couldn't adjust adapt to being a yes man for people who didn't deserve any respect.
I agree to some extent. Not 100% however. I'll use one of your examples. The company that wants the "yes man or Nut Hugger". Yes, they want plenty of good little sheep to operate like an Ant colony. They also need the Alpha wolf to herd the sheep. These ppl become the CEO's, the crew chiefs and leaders of their fields. Without Alpha's , there would be no one to take charge and tell the masses of sheep what to do. There aren't only Alpha's in the work place, or sports, military etc. Whether or not you think there is a need for Alpha's in every day life, outside of these listed professions, they exist none the less. The guy who walks into a room and gives off this air of charisma. All of the females in the room look up and gawk, while their men put their heads down. This obviously happens when a man is physically imposing and/or attractive. But that isn't what I mean. I mean the ones who command respect (and get it) without ever speaking a word. They have a magnetic effect. Natural leaders. Everything about them oozes confidence and charisma. When they speak, ppl listen. They are every where. I'm not a god fearing man. I don't believe in intelligent design in any form. This is nature. Alpha's are born, not made. I'll use my craft as an example. You can spend years training a man to fight. You can surround him with all of the best teachers and give him the best tools available. You can't teach him to have heart. Fight or flight doesn't have to be literal. It can be a mental battle. You cannot teach or alter the fight or flight instinct. This well trained fighter suddenly becomes paralyzed with fear and forgets all his training. The Alpha doesn't. He has that drive to challenge himself and excels in the face of adversity. So if you are saying that the Alpha's are being phased out by evolution, I have to disagree. You don't see a place for the Alpha other than the professions you name. I say what about the smallest setting? Your household. Even if you aren't an Alpha in society, in your home, You are (or your wife is, lol). Every pack has to have a leader. A disciplinarian. One to look to for protection and to provide. I don't believe we would survive as a species without the alpha. Most men want to be an alpha and even identify themselves as one. They think that Big muscles and a bad attitude makes them an alpha. So silly!
AnonI'm going to marry you when I grow up.
"They have a magnetic effect. Natural leaders."
Would you say they have an "Ascribed Status" or an "Achieved Status"?
I'm not saying you are wrong because I will take the Socratic approach and tell you how little I know. Every class I took at the university only made it more clear as to how little I know. As far as sociological concepts I cant find anything describing natural Born other than Nobility such as being born a king.
Lets look at Lebron James. Could you put him on the court if he had never played basketball, never been taught the rules, never been coached and he be as good as he is? As far as basketball, I would say he is definitely dominate right now. His status is an achieved status because he had to work for it and he has to continue to work for it and soon someone new will come along
The leaders that are put in place aren't necessarily Alphas. You use the Nobility of a king and being born into leadership. That is obviously NOT what i'm talking about. Alpha's posses leadership qualities. It doesn't mean they are automatically thrust into that role.
Anonamen, I agree with you about our leaders that are put in place not being Alphas. I don't think we have any politicians that are Alphas
"Alpha's posses leadership qualities"
The word that comes to mind is "Respect" and that is something you have to earn. You have a lot of people on here that admire you but that is not something you were just born with. The respect you have gained is because you worked for it.
RustyhookerAgree with your hypothesis. Kids are taught at an early age to "think for yourself" yet as soon as tgey enter school it's all about thinking under someone elses ideal. Teachers preach or actually brainwash and medicate young boys to be more like the girls. No roygh play, be calm and quiet. No war play, no combat games. Demasculinization in my state is visable everywhere. Emo kids with skin tight Jeans, makeup, manty-hose,, manks and the list goes on. Historically humankind went from rugged folks to house bums in less than 50 years. The fridgerator, TV and job switches to offices....whereas normal darwinism occurs over many generations our has been immediate. And while our govt is defunding our alphas and preaching peace, our enemies are aware of our plight. The next couple generations are in a heap of stewy crap.
The best alpha males lead the yes men.. They are the bosses and leaders.. If you wanna be an alpha male then you better be ready to compete with the other alphas.. If you can't compete then it would make a life much easier for you to be the yes man/bitch (We see this in animals all the time, we are no different.. Just a glorified version of it).. I think most if not all men in some form or another want to be the alpha male.. we're wired towards that but most of us are not meant to be leaders which turns into a inferiority complex.. Really just take your pick it's pretty much the culprit for every guy with a chip on their shoulder.. No one likes the idea of feeling inferior.. And eventually they give up and become the yes man.. and I really do believe society is geared towards turning "men" into the bitch.. Makes business easier, makes politics easier, makes life in general much easier if every one is a bitch.. So yeah I agree with everything you said I don't think people are just becoming dumber.. They are being forced to by outside sources.. Now I sound like a conspiracy theorist... But it's pretty obvious and hard to ignore
In the work place the alpha male is the boss. This could be a man or a women. Do they want someone in there challenging their ideas, or perhaps producing better ones. Some might but others do not want to be out preformed by their employees. This does not promote a healthy business. In some companies they do want you to be "yes people". I could not work for a place like this. A company should promote and want leaders or alpha males. The alpha male should always be tested, not in a physical sense but a productivity sense.
As far as your concept on TV and being programed I agree%. It has trained people not to think for themselves. Consumerism in America is all about convincing you to buy their product. If mindless humor is the most effective then that will be used.
Great post by the way plus1
AnonWhere I work there is a retired full bird colonel that has no valor, no integrity and there is not a single person who can stand the guy. I doubt that he could fight his way out of a wet paper bag. He answers to the bean counters and he is a yes man himself. Not a single person in our company will agree that he is an alpha male. As far as testing your boss, Alpha male still has to pay the bills, Alpha male needs to make the house payment.
I know of many "bosses" that are unable to enjoy community activities for fear of being found out by those who would treat them entirely different where there is equal ground. I ran into an old boss of mine a while back on neutral ground and he was scared shitless and actually started stuttering. I could be wrong but an alpha male should be respected by other men and not laughed at.
There is ascribed status and there is achieved status.
PS, Good Post
Well thought out and researched I knew you would come with nothing less! Love it! And even in the military, law enforcement, and sports world, there is a great deficiency in the Alpha realm. What is really keen about this is how the fish put themselves in an environment that handicapped them, rather then standing against the external pressures that were incumbered upon them. Therefore accepting weakness in order to survive rather then a boldness that could and most likely would have ended in their death. Like so many today who play it safe in order to survive and never achieving greatness. And the few that risk it all so that their name will be remembered even if it cuts their existence short. But choices have their pros & cons to them. None of the choices have all pro and no con. So much here buddy great post!!!
AnonI was watching a clip about ADHD in children and it was actually being turned on by Epigenetic Effect. Meaning external forces is the root cause of ADHD in children.
I completely agree with that and unfortunately for the children who are to young and naive to make a decision about what direction to take, it is the parents that provide the environment that creates the so called disorder.
AnonExcellent post and thank you for your civility. Pank and I were having thought provoking ideas over his post.
http://www.eroids.com/forum/general/off-topic/alpha-or-wanna-be
I agree many men can be alphas in their own home but at the same time bite their lip while at work. They may also be on antidepressants, anxiety meds and sleeping pills. In this society the one who keeps their mouth shut and does as they are told are the ones who are rewarded. I'm not sure that I agree with you on alphas being in politics. I can’t think of one politician that wasn't raised with a silver spoon. Many have "Ascribed Status" which is a ranking or position given to them at birth, while an "achieved status" is a status earned by the person through his own efforts.
As far as owning your own business, many businesses don't make it because of financial reasons. Would it be fair to say that if a business failed, he was never an alpha male? Because someone is better with money than someone else that makes them more of an alpha?
I just cant help but wonder if things like valor, honor and sacrifice are something that get turned on by adapting to the environment. Some people have totally given up.

PS: I always appreciate reading your posts and this one is no different
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkAdapting to ones environment. You adapt and thrive or get ran over. A silver spoon definitely can get you a leg up but again, if you don't handle it well you will not lead for long. There are surely exceptions to everything but the basics are true.
Your words ring of truth but every male is not meant to be an alpha, never was. There is still a place for the alphas as there has always been , usually tho they go their own way, start a business, lead, etc. Sure I think it is more difficult to separate from the pack and lead these days but I would bet our forefathers would say the exact same thing. We are no different. Also I think there are lots of levels of alpha, as someone mentioned earlier, many men are alphas in their own home (many are not) Many are alphas in small business, or local politics, a smaller number are alphas in big business or state politics and an even smaller number are alphas of conglomerates , national politics, etc. The game is still the same..
HardBodEricI have not watched TV in Close to 6 years, simply because i felt like it was insulting my intelligence everytime i turned it on. The only thing good to watch on TV was Spike, so in time i found Joe Rogan Podcast about 3 and half years ago, and that is where i get my (Mental Health), He is ALPHA MALE and talks about subjects you will NEVER hear on TV or Radio.
GearofWarI'll put it in simple terms: The pussification of America continues. Nice post Destructos. Very thought provoking.
everything about this is very true. sad though but true
AnonWow well a lot of heavy stuff out there and most very conceptual , but obviously some real world observations too.
I think there is a place for the alpha male, although that too may be getting destroyed for various reasons. But that place in in our own homes. I may sound like a chauvinist and thats not my intent , but within my home I am the Alpha. Now that doesnt mean there arent other places I take that role, but at the very least every man could or should be the king of his castle and family. I think a whole lot of what ales society could be cured if men simply behaved like men in their own house.
AnonYou are a very intelligent individual, sometimes you go over my head and it takes me a bit to get caught up. On top of that you bring on new thought provoking questions.
" I may sound like a chauvinist and thats not my intent" Now you have me thinking about the single mothers that are the head of the household raising children by themselves. Could we call them alpha-females? Remember they have the glass ceiling and are usually paid less than a man. They actually have more sociological restraints than men do.
Most of them single mothers end up getting knocked off the alpha spot by their children prematurely. I grew up in the 80's lots of single moms being dominated by their male children in particular. Including my own Mom.
You know those aliens we see that describe a typical alien? Big eyes big head but small almost worthless body? Im sure this is what we're evolving into except the bodies are going to be small/fat and worthless.
The crayon theory
AnonPs if you want to find the root of all this..
Empiricism ;)
Anonlooks like we have a philosopher on our hands ;)
AnonLmao!! Be careful what you 'think' some ppl may think your crazy ;)
Tv certainly does program us and the desire to conform to the norm is just our sheepish nature! Even an alpha male is but a ram leading sheep.. I often watch a good friend of mine watch the telly.. Without dissing them i find it very intriguing how their moods literally adapt to the show that theyre watching! Im always finding that they have a brand new attitude after watching a new show and OMFG im sooo fucking over being spoken to by these characters and hahah seeeriously.. Tellin this person to stop acting like the bitch of that tv show just leads to me being called a nutter lol!! Her moods are nearly always just like a tv show.. Ya know how you see on a drama how theyre 'acting' upset but ya just KNOW it aint real.. Like its just faked! Well every where i fkn look this is all im seeing nowadays bro... Faked fuckin emotions!! Yet i get called a cold stone because im not like a bipolar freak like the rest of the sheepish cunts around me!! Mind control is very fkn real my friend and theres not a fkn thing we can do about it bar stop our kids watching telly!!
Pretty sure we already know what were evolving into bro ;) little green men with great big fkn eyes! Lol
AnonDude... You always type the most amazing shit, thank you.

Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkAnonStudies say attractive people promote faster and are more successful. Fit men are more attractive then obese out of shape men. So in a way the alpha male still wins. Plus these more fit in shape men reproduce with the more attractive women, a double win i might say.
X2
Sexy gus like us still win this war (if i say so)
I have also seing very good looking ladies/guys be the most insecure people in this planet. So fuck it, who knows bro, might be just a mental stage, kinda like if you feel good then you look good you know. I noticed some fellas at this new gym i go to that are my age and feel old and old fellas that feel young alpha male kinda.
