+ 1 Do you prefer Earbuds or Headphones for Training?

ad

I am going to go and buy some earbuds or headphones (wireless) to use whilst training to block out external noise and obviously to listen to music through! Lol

I have never worn either before when lifting, so my question is to you guys who use them in the gym - which is the better option and is most comfortable to wear while lifting (got to be comfortable and not come out/off during benching and deadlifting Lol) Good

Headphones all the way, hate earbuds as they always fall out or get sweaty and start to hurt. Best Headphones I've found are Addidas ones, fabric material great sound quality and volume

I ended up getting some JBL headphones in the end and used them earlier tonight, I used them on half the sets and the other half off. Its great having music on but I also sometimes miss hearing the sound of the bar and plates, it can feel a bit disorientating even though you can still see it. Great to throw on after an awesome set though and Rock out LMAO

We all know the real music to your ears is that amazing sound of metal plates rattling together while you’re cranking out 315 on incline for 10+ reps.

But seriously though…that sound is amazing…

press1's picture

No No NO!!!! Lol I Hate hearing that - that means plates are rolling around and separating meaning you are expending more energy into stabilizing the bar when it could be getting an extra rep! I have NEVER in my life not used clamps even on 135. Get em packed tight

SeeOhShow's picture

No not that much space. In my experience those plates are never perfectly flat relative to each other, so even with clips/collars on you get that very distinct rattle sound 45s make bumping into each other on a bar. Not the coated 45s I’m talking the thinner ones with the slight lip around the edge that have they real thin layer of rust on them.

Mikeyt84L.I..N.Y.'s picture

Oh yeah. I honestly don't think I'd be able to focus with ear buds on and people walking around me. I like to hear what's going on around me especially with over 300 pounds over me in pretty vulnerable. Lol. This place i go to though i have to use clamps otherwise the plates slide a Lil during the set. The setup at my father's house is that old school Olympic that didn't need clamps and the plates stay no problem.
Not many places have those type of bars and plates anymore unless it's some kind of power lifting gym.
I can't wait to go hit it tomorrow. I been doing 3 days a week so makes me so anxious to workout. I might go up to 4. It's hard to take days off tho. Really takes discipline sticking to it.

This is going to sound really dumb, but am I the only one that thinks old school metal plates feel heavier than rubber bumper plates?

press1's picture

The Deep dish metal plates are what I have at home, some of the Tri Grip ones too.

I use ear buds. But I wish I had bought some of the "active use" ear buds with the little bracket that goes over the ear for added stability. I find myself frequently pushing my buds back in my ear when at the gym. And they occasionally fall out mid lift if I'm really struggling.

I have the One Plus ear buds. Other than what I mentioned already they're great. Sound good, they only need to be charged once every 2-3 weeks and are noise cancelling.

I like earbuds. Mainly because I can wear one at a time to alternate and also be open to people approaching me.

press1's picture

Do you guys that go to big gyms have yours paired with a PIN to make sure no one pairs with yours or do you find this tends not to happen?

In a promo × 1
Blck_panda's picture

Only needs pin the first time to establish the connection

Tell me buddy as I am a technophobe with this stuff LOL Can people in my apartment building only pair with my headphones when I first turn them on and that Bluetooth light is flashing? Or can they cut into them when I am training and start playing some porno??!!! Lmao

Blck_panda's picture

Lol nah, you need the pin to pair. They cant connect to it. And yes, only in pairing mode. If you have beats, it makes it extremly hard for other to connect.
Your safe.

Beats earbuds that wrap your ear. They dont fall out.

Gonna add on to the list of approval for these. This is what I use for cardio. Only issue is I have to reset them every once in a while because the “ear detection” will stop working on one of them and not connect to my phone. Not a big deal but still kinda annoying.

Blck_panda's picture

I dont have that much, I took off the setting for them to detect each other in order to skip or play etc..
Just have to make sure to update them every once in a while on the app.

Well well well…I didn’t know they had an app. So mine haven’t been updated since I bought them. Good to know lol

Blck_panda's picture

Yes my guy.. download the app and update them when you can for the beats.

Man you aren’t kidding…I bought myself one of those functional trainers (cable tower with a smith machine built in) for Christmas. One of the uprights has a QR code and says “Scan for the app”….all I could think was what the fuck does a cable machine need an app for?

I have these, best investment ever I made for the gym..

If I remember its like 13 hours of charge in them.. I bang them on charge every to weeks.

Blck_panda's picture

Yes, i charge them like every 2/3 weeks

Best ones but the ones I had were not noise canceling so I could still here the gym music trash. I have pixel pro 2 now and they fell out for like a few weeks, but stopped happening over time.

Blck_panda's picture

That sucks bud. I literally just lost the gummy part that goes in the ear last night. Just ordered replacements off amazon.

Exactly what i got. The beats. Others fall out your ear with any sudden movements and over the ear you cant do decline exercises and the sweat builds underneath the cups. Powerbeats pro is the way to go!
Edit: they are waterproof and "noise isolating"

press1's picture

These look like the solution Lol I didn't know what the hell to go for in the end - I had my mind made up on headphones and then everyone tells me to get earbuds!!! LMAO Then the guy in the shop tells me to get airbuds or whatever the fuck they are called! Next it will be Buttbuds - So I went with my original idea and got Headphones which of course I have just realised aren't ideal for if you wanna turn your head sideways on a bench Lmao We will see how they go, may go back and get earbuds too.

Been using a cheap $25 Chinese pair for the last 2 years! Never had any issues and they still work like they’re brand new haha!

Pumped_'s picture

A good set of headphone will stay secure but once you get in weird angles they slide off. They will get you far though

press1's picture

I got a pair of JBL's and have just downloaded and set up the equalizer on my phone - they sound pretty good actually.

Jbl and beats are probably the best 2 out there as far as sharp sound

Yes, these work the best. I have owned every kind possible and swesr by these.

This question tortures me man. I love music when lifting but hate ambient gym sounds
Buds for convenience (woth horrible ambient noise), but over ear for active noise cancelling (but ain't great when sling around, benching etc).
Over ears upright, buds when flat etc...
It's a horrible trade off!

I go with bluetooth earbuds for the convenience and portability but headphones are verifiably better for noise cancelling and sound quality. I might switch when these finally die.

bigred250's picture

Earbuds all day! I like the ones that are Bluetooth to my phone but the individual buds are connected. I like that so I can string them on my neck and not worry about losing one or the other

Primo Pantani's picture

I’ll second this. I think the battery life is better too. I haven’t had a pair last more than a few months though, the cord always gets messed up and one of them stops working

bigred250's picture

I kid you not. I have been using this cheap Chinese pair for the last 2 years. Haven’t had any issues. The best $25 I ever spent

I use to say ear buds until they were out of battery one day and I used my wife’s headphones. Can’t hear anything with the noise cancellation on, and people dont come up to talk to me because they can see them on my head.

Triggerman83's picture

Hey man! Wireless earbuds all day! I wear my earbuds ALOT, between work and training. I typically listen to audiobooks & podcasts while working in noisy shop, & music while training. The noise canceling is important to be able to Hear the narration clearly with the back noise of the shop. I would stick with what ever brand of device you will be using the most. Specifically the software for the phone being imbedded in wireless earbuds ; In example, I have an IPhone, have used numerous different headphone until I tried Apple AirPods and they were a game changer. I have a close friend that has a Samsung phone (galaxy maybe) and he has the Samsung headphone that have the imbedded software for his device. All the well known brands have great selections and price points. Either here or PM your device you will be using most, and I can try and link something like I mean.

Earbuds. I have the Beats brand. Sometimes the cord gets in the way but overall much more freedom than headphones. Plus if i have to it allows phone calls.
