Back to college at age 27
ad
Can anyone else relate? I dropped out at the end of my junior year and took 5-6 years to work in the real world. Im excited about getting my education back on track and the job opportunities it will open up. Im also pretty nervous. Manly about being 27 and Ill be living on campus in a suite with 3 other guys. Ill have my own room- but its going to be a huge difference being as Ive lived alone for the last 8 years.

Im 37 ,and i start in couple weeks.i can relate with being nervous.Im a union plumber, and where i live unions just dont get enough work. The living with other males part is something i could never do.Im the alpha, and there was always a nasty ending, but if you stay focused and stick to the plan of bettering yourself then youll make it happen.I dont know about you,but the older i get the easier it is for me to learn.Good luck man! Do it!
I can relate. I worked a few years after I got out of the army, had a kid, and then went to college full time and worked full time. I remember listening to the kids say "How am I going to study for the exam, I have a couple parties to go to this weekend?" I was thinking, yeah right, I got a kid who stays up crying all night, I'm working 12 hours til 3AM, wake up to go to school, and you're bitching? STFU
That was a long a time ago. Now I make a lot more money as an IT Manager, and I don't bust my ass in the shop throwing boxes around. So it was worth it.
Keep it going, it's worth it.
AnonCant relate but good for you ! Thats fantastic ! Im 43 and would still like to go back, so better you do this now .
First of all let me say... YOU ARE AWESOME! for stepping up and choosing to go back to school... 27 is so young and you are going to find that you are more mature now and are more dedicated. Now that you know what the real worlds like you can appreciate the opportunity to make more of yourself. I got my accounting degree when I was in my early 20's and didn't think I would ever need anything more, a year ago I enrolled back in college to obtain and degree in IT... I've found that at the ripe ole age of 34 I'm more focused and the concepts are easier to grasp now that I've been in the world of work. Be proud of yourself!!
WeatherwedThank you. You're right about being focused and appreciative. After being in the real world getting my ass kicked by no nonsense bosses- professors will be a breeze. Ive been calming my nerves by reminding myself that the world doesnt revolve around me so I wont stick out like I imagine. It's a hard concept for someone as good looking as me to get :)~.
I LOVE IT! Last line was great.. I gigged... you are going to be fine.. you and your sexyself.. If I can get through a day being this sexy you can too.... LOL best of luck my friend.. if you need any help hit me up.. I have many a ton of friends that are back in school now... BTW what are you majoring in??
WeatherwedLMAO! Yes! Political science/ public management. If all goes well Ill get into a decent law school if not Ill be a census taker.
Hell shoot for something in the middle like a politician!!
Actually, yes I can relate. I was about that age when I was midway into a college.
I wasted 4 years of my life in my (small town) hometown in 1-2 loser jobs until getting my act together, going to a 2-year technical school, then a "real" college (Auburn University) for a worthwhile degree.
In my experience, it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. There were a few people older than I was in my major! The "older" students were often much more serious about learning and had some life experience under their belt. Maybe because engineering was so hard and I was focused I didn't realize any truly negative things from the situation.
The truth is, don't feel bad. If you look at the graduate programs, you'll see a lot of older guys in those, not really serious about getting out into the workplace.
Being around younger people is obviously going to be a little bit awkward sometimes but if you keep your mind/eyes open opportunities for having friends & getting women will come around.
Just be sure to enjoy yourself and party hard. I regret not really having done so much...if I knew then what I know now about college girls.....!
But also I lived alone, so good luck with that! Good for you for doing this! You won't regret it.
WeatherwedThanks bro. You have a lot of valid points.
Im nervous about my social skills living in close quarters. For the past 5-6 years ive lived a pretty isolated life- no real friends or girlfriend. My only interactions have been work and the gym ( which seem to go well). There will be a few positives. Living with other college students will keep me from feeling further alienated by my age and will keep me focused on school just like they are. I
I'm going to be going to schools as well. It feels weird because everyone is younger and I'm easily annoyed by them.
Weatherwed,
Yes it will be a bit of a shock but I have to say good for you! You will probably wind up being a good helper to these younger guys.
WeatherwedAnd girls
I don't know how the hell I forgot that! Most importantly the girls
get a safe!
WeatherwedExcellent point. I have about 5-6 moderately expensive items I have to buy to be ready for classes. That's on my list- but its going to have to wait a few weeks. Ill have to be crafty in the mean time.
AnonAfter living alone it will take some getting used to, could you imagine joining the navy and getting stuck on a submarine? i think it will be a positive impact on your part being more polished than the kids who are just leaving their mom and dads house
