+ 1 hormone fluctuations vs. depression

ad

I've been on birth control for over ten years now. I started in high school because I needed the supplemental hormones to regulate my body. The doctor ( same one I still use) didn't come to any conclusions about why I needed the extra hormones though because she claimed tests were too expensive and insurance wouldn't pay for it.

Fast forward to a few months ago... life got hectic and I forgot time after time to take my pill. Eventually I had to scrap the whole pack and wait to start over - forcing me to go a month without the hormones that my body had become so used to receiving. My emotions went haywire! I became explosive and manic. The hubby didn't even recognize me anymore. It was bad. Eventually I became so desperate that I called the doctor. I thought that while I knew my emotions should stabilize after going back on birth control, there might be something they could offer for the short term so I didn't get fired or divorced! Instead of listening to me though, the nurse played some shitty game of telephone between me and the doctor and finally told me the doctor thinks I need to be on anti depressants! What?! I started crying on the phone. I explained, I am not a depressed person - I love my man, I have a good job, I love my life! My hormones were just wacked! Then... the nurse said being off my bc for a month or two wouldn't effect me like that and that if I didn't like their recommendation I should go see a specialist.

I was so mad. I ignored the doctor and went back on bc and after a while I was back to normal... thanks for nothing doc.

I'm just so sick of doctors using anti depressants as a universal cure all! Dig a little deeper guys! Come on!

I am with Grrrl on this one.. You need a doctor that will check your levels. At one point I was on 14 different meds. Meds for Lupus, blood thinners, depressions, pain, migraine and god knows what else.. I was sick everyday.. I felt so bad and it wasn't getting better. It seemed like every month they would add something new. Finally one morning it all came to an end.. I got up had breakfast and went to the grocery store. Half way in I started feeling really bad.. the next thing I know I'm in the floor bruised and bleeding with people all around me. Once I was at the ER they did blood work and came back and said that my body had pretty much shut down from the extreme changes in hormone levels. Everything was off.. and I mean off.. After sitting down with the dr and going over everything I was on.. 7 of the meds should not have even been taken together. Needless to say, I walked out of the hospital a few days later and didn't take anything unless the dr could show me from lab work where this medication was needed. I had to demand to be shown ONCE.. after that.. they made sure that they reviewed and didn't offer meds that I didn't need.

Your nurse and doctor should be fired for suggesting that you take an anti depressant.. as a professional in the medical field the first thing I do is send someone for labs before ANY recommedations for psychotropic medications are made... I recall several years ago when I was on hormone replacement therapy the PA questioned my scripts and said that she though I should have taken an anti depressant instead and when I said to here why would I want to do that? I m not depressed because of my serotonin levels or because of some other factor, my hormones were out of balance? She couldn't answer me and I never went back there.

I will not be going back to her. The real frustrating thing too was I specifically said I needed something to help with the " now". They told me the ad wouldn't even kick in for a few weeks. What the f would that have helped?

Good for you! I totally agree about the lifestyle too. Being healthy and fit is the best medicine.

good for you C... you don't need something to mask what you need to deal with .. sometimes we all need a little help but these docs would have us all drugged up for no damn good reason other than it is easier to push a pill than to do some real work

I have found that doing things like martial arts , yoga, and meditation help quite a bit with ptsd.
