Training while sick.. Do you or not?
ad
Woke up pretty sick this morning, (I think it's test flu but this isn't about that,) and I got to thinking about training while sick. I normally continue to train, even when I feel like shit. I have even set a couple PR's while feeling under the weather. How do you guys feel about it?
And just to be clear, I'm not talking about having pneumonia or Ebola. Of course you don't train feeling like that. I'm talking about that kind of I-have-the-crud-and-I-should-go-to-the-doctor-but-fuck-it, kind of sick.
Medical opinions are welcome but I'm also looking for some bro science. What works for you? Rest, or train?

ryanlaino_It all depends how sick you are, I personally train if I have the cold what'll ill do is go on a bike for 25-35 minuts and sweat as much as possible I find that helps the best. I wouldnt push as much weight but ill try to battle through it. Somthing that you can take that helps with sickness is green tea witha spoon of natural honey, i find that most helpful
When I'm really sick, i don't train. If it's not too much, I'm trying to. But not as hard as I'm fit. Your body will tell you, if you have to rest or not.
Gym time I saw "me" time. It is as much for my mind and stress relief as it is for muscle growth and physical health. I go into depression when I don't exercise, so, when I'm sick I still hit the gym. I may not lift as hard, or as long but I still go.
What I don't like about going to the gym when I'm sick is touching everything with my germy paws, it makes me think..."some sick f$(# was working out and got his germs all over the weight bars and machines... probably how I got sick"
Good topic, +1
i go when i feel like i should sick or not. usually a mild cold or flu doesnt stop me from working or lifting. now if i cant stop shitting or i am not eating because i feel to crappy i wait it out
From a medical And athletic stand point you don't want to work out when sick, even the first few days of a cold
Whine under stress the body increases protein synthesis as it is necessary for immune response. When the body goes into a negative nitrogen balance, it gets sick
When training, the body increases protein synthesis as it is necessary for healing and muscle growth. When the body goes into a negative nitrogen balance it stops growing
As you can see, if you're sick and training, the body is constantly fightng for protein, and either way somebody is screwed.
Let your body heal. It's better in the long run. Just thick if it as an unplanned rest day
Also most OTC meds you take when sick, are NSAIDs which affect muscle growth
nsaids interfere with muscle recovery ... ;-(
Yep! Inflammation markers are needed so the body knows what to do and where to fix it. NSAIDs kill these markers do the muscles stay damaged over time
Weider said that unless you are sick in bed you train FWIW. But If you have a fever or are hacking up or puking please stay out of the gym to not infect everyone else. It comes down to whether you feel you can be productive or not. You dont always have to have the best workout of your life every session but if its more than mental and you are weak and physically ill its often non or counterproductive and better just to rest.
Take some time to recoop bro..ur body is already fighting off whatever it is that is effecting you so why strain it anymore than you have too..if u got the sniffles and slight cough then that's fine, but if your puking and shitting all over the place And running a high grade fever then common sense says stay home and get better..
as others have stated below it comes down to how sick you are. myself personally i take the time off until i feel better for a few reasons, 1 being your recovery time for your sickness will suffer if your breaking your muscles down in the gym hence you will not get better as fast because your body is trying to recover from being sick and healing from your workouts one takes more from the other, 2 if you have a fever or a start of a fever then chose to work out also will raise your temperature even more which will make you even more sick,3 any type of cold with above the neck symptoms its ok to moderately train like sniffles , head ache , slight cough etc anything below the neck like coughing a lot, body aches, fever or any type of fatigue i just rest up until im better , also if your taking any meds like antibiotics , or cold meds a lot of them slow down or hinder protein synthesis which is how your muscles recover. basically comes down to you listening to your body and using common sense.
really it depends on what it is, but if i can get up and go to work I can lift.
Depends how severe it feels, I work long long days and sometimes if I'm sick and I can feel my body just aching I will go for a walk on a tread mill and that is all. If I have the energy I still go and lift, I like to "sweat it out"
Take that rest and go back and crush it once your feel better.4-5 days off the gym ain't shit. Or your can just infect the whole gym with your sickness. Jk. But really take a break and let your body recuperate.
I 've been sick the last four weeks ... the first two weeks I couldn't get out of bed, ended my cycle because i couldnt keep any food or water down ... the third week I just felt like death but did some light training anyway because the stress of not training was worse than being sick.. mind you I still couldn't keep any food in ... just water.... this week it is hit or miss some days there 's just no keeping the food down and I am back to training .. listening to my body and adjusting my training to what it is going to give me.
Awe Grrl, God bless you. No one should be sick for 4 weeks. I hope you continue to improve.
Thanks Aces... today was pretty fair.. yesterday not so much .. but I seem to be stringing more fair days together than not ;)
Rest is very important when it's at it's worst but a hard 2 hr sess will help break that shit up then rest like a log after. Feel 100 by the next day! I was always raised a little hard work will get rid of the crude lol maybe just my southern thinking.
Nope. I learned the hard way that rest is important.
Training while sick can just make it worse. Your body needs those energy resources to heal. I don't do it anymore. I had walking pneumonia and I was training and I was on a big cycle and I didn't know how sick I was until I landed in the hospital for 6 weeks.
Stay home.
I had that shit in bootcamp, no joke I was sicker then I ever had been, all bad!
Damn man now that would be rough...
A good friend of mine continued working out while suffering from the flu. A year later he became impotent and was always fatigued. After passing out his wife checked him into the Hospital. The prognoses was that the flu virus had moved into his heart. Ten years of disability and he is still waiting on a new heart. What he says is worse is that not even Viagra helps.
Jesus... That's the worst horror story I've heard in a while.
I'd rest and eat.
Resting is easy while sick. Forcing myself to eat is about like forcing myself to train.
Sorry bro...didnt know ur appetite was down....if i could email you some vegetable soup/stew with some meat in it and some crackers, or grilled cheese I would....if that would help...
No worries man, my wife is taking care of me very well. About 90% sure it's just a little test flu. Should be gone by tomorrow afternoon.
Right on.....hang in there and this day will pass...
Within reason I still go. I usually feel a little better while lifting at least. But if I am hacking up a lung or really tore up with a fever or something of that level then no, I won't risk infecting everyone else at the gym with it. Like said below, the best thing would probably be to stay out of the gym for a few days or a week, but I realize, we are addicts..
I've done both, but now I rest and hydrate let my body do it's healing. A week off shouldn't set you back. When I train while sick I feel like I'm not giving my body proper time to heal and just prolong the cold/sickness.
