+ 1 Subacromial cortisone injection on cycle
Hi Fella's
So been having a bit of shoulder pain when training (mainly chest and pressing movements). They originally thought I had a bicep tendon and/or rotator cuff tear but the MRI shows this not to be the case (thankfully). I do have some subacromial bursitis and some tendonopathy (this is normal given my age and how I lift). The sports doc I am seeing wants to inject the subacromial space and bursa with cortisone later this week. I'm in my last 4 weeks of my cycle. Can't see any issues with this but thought I'd throw it out there to check if anyone has any experience with this type of procedure on cycle. I will add that I have managed to train through the pain for the last 6 weeks so it hasn't stopped me training and making great gains. It's just gets bloody uncomfortable while training and for about 24 hours after.
Thoughts and advice appreciated.

So quick update. I had my injection today. Kenalog and some local anaesthetic. Only issue was them finding a needle long enough to get through the delt into the subacromial space lol. Enjoyed watching him do it on the ultra sound. They waited 5 mins for the local to take effect then gave me two 22kg Dumbells put me on a flat bench and let me bench a bit to see if I could elicit any pain response. There was nothing which is diagnostically relevant as if it was one of the other possibilities they would have expected me to still elicit a pain response to a loaded press. So now I've got to wait 5 days before training upper body again (the cortisone can take that long to work and there is risk of ligament rupture if training too soon) and see how it goes plus keep going to physio. Fingers crossed but good early signs. I'll keep you posted. Guess I'll be smashing plenty of leg workouts in the next few days.
I've been dealing with rotator pain for the last year especially and just had my first shots done. My doctor uses Kenalog instead of cortisone on mine. I can't believe the amount of relief it has given me.
I was in constant pain and when it came to chest exercises I would usually stop from shoulder pain before I could fatigue my chest to make any decent gains. Still have to play safe as the injuries still there but am definitely a believer in these shoulder injections.
Kenalog is also a allergy relief steroid that I usually get in the glute every 6 months, so this was a 2 for 1 on me.
Excellent thanks mate. That's what they're objecting today - Kenalog!
RustyhookerUnless you're on deca cycle. Trying to find the med papers showing nandrolone negates the cortisone. This paper shows slowed healing at a break.

Cheers Rusty. Fountain of knowledge as usual. No Deca/NPP currently and no fracture so hopefully gtg tomorrow. Thanks fella. +1

I've had 5 shots in past month to relieve stenosis in lower back. I didn't have any issues for what that's worth.
Thanks mate.
You still working through with that injury? Sounds like a bitch.
Yup. 2 days off a year. Doesn't limit me too much just chronic pain in hips and weakness in left calve, hamstring and glute.
I've had an injection on a bursa sac on my elbow while on cycle before. I was fine and so was 100's of other athletes who get cortisone shots while on.
Thanks for sharing your experience mate.
No problem Dac, be sure to take it easy for a bit though. The pain will subside but the injury is still there. Treat it like a rehab untill you are certain you can go full steam. Take care.
Get a second opinion...
bigmurphEven if he got a second opinion he is in a tough spot. He could just deal with it he could do the inj or he could go with surgery depending on how bad it really is but I would say surgery might be overboard. Another way would be a script for anti inflammatory drugs.
Just curious meddx do you think he should get a second opinion to see if he needs anything at all and maybe the doc is just trying to treat to make money,or do you think he shouldn't get the shot or just to be safe because a second opinion is always good
I was under the impression the joint pain had no etiology...OP provided some Hx and it helped clear that up...
I'm happy with the diagnosis and generally the treatment plan. This is a long standing issue with this shoulder from an old dislocation. I've had one surgery on it. It's been largely fine until I was testing 1RM on bench and felt something "go". Had some pain in push movements when benching and doing dips etc ever since. Just trained through but i wanted to make sure there was no actual tear. Overhead press movements are fine. My only concern was with having cortisone injected while on cycle. I can't find anything that says this should be avoided but I was keen to get members views.
There is a post here regarding cortisone injections, while on cycle, that airs on the side of caution....glad to know about Hx of injury...thx
Cheers fella. I'm looking but I can't find it I have to say. I've had one of these before and had no issues with how I responded but I was not on cycle. Anyway will try and research further and make a decision. I am leaning towards going for it right now.
I haven't read this whole thread. But.. First thing that pops out in my mind is the potential for cortisone injections to cause calcification and/or breakdown of tendons/ligaments. Combine this with the accelerated muscle growth, i.e. hypertrophy, during an AAS cycle and I imagine you would be at greater risk for tendon injury. However, I'm guessing there's little research to suggest this tendinopathy occurs after just one injection. In my experience it takes several injections to do so. Food for thought anyways..
Query adverse reactions from combining cortisone and anabolic steroids...see what pops up...
Agree with murph.. prob be okay....back of mind says be aware of rises in blood sugar, but that will be compensated for on a one time dose....and no DM noted...
Thanks again!
bigmurphI got a shot in my knee when I was 20 im 90 percent sure it was cortisone and I was taking test cyp had no issues or interactions it also helps but every once in awhile you have to get a maintenance shot and the more you get the faster they wear off
Cheers for sharing your experience mate.
bigmurphNo problem brother I see you're experienced in the future I might hit you up for something
Good luck with your shoulder i hope it heals up proper
Hit me up anytime fella. And thanks for the well wishes with the shoulder.
