+ 2 lactose intolerant and whey concentrate?

ad

Went to go pickup some protein, and got this "tri pharma" tub on sale which is a mix of isolate, concentate, and casein.

I'm just wondering how many lactose intolerant people have tried concentrate blend proteins and gave them the runs? Not sure if I can return it anymore since I already opened.

I would try returning it. Some places may refund your money or give you a replacement to try. Pure Isolate is typically very well tolerated but blends could be a problem for some.

Put some PawPaw (Papaya) in your shake - it contains Papain which is an exzyme that helps break down protein (it's also used in meat tenderisers). I have it every day and don't get Protein bloat anymore. Some Protein powders have it added, but a lot don't - especially the cheaper brands. Papain is also available as a supplement, so maybe take a tab with your shake if fresh fruit is not available.

I have tried a number of Protein powders over the years and some of the more expensive ones have given me the squirts. I have been using a cheaper concentrate/isolate blend for several months now and have found it to be much more tolerable than some of the bigger name brands. I guess that everyone's gut reacts differently.

I'm lactose intolerant, not really badly but its there if I have a lot of concentrate. Isolate is always going to be your best bet but can be less desirable because often it's less creamy and thick - So the way round this I've learnt is to do one scoop isolate and 1 scoop concentrate then buy a tub of Lactase tabs. Take one of these bad boys before your shake and I swear you'll have zero issues Smile The lactase tabs become the enzyme your body doesn't produce and breaks down the lactose for you.

Do the lactase tabs help with bloat?

press1's picture

Its one of the main things they stop mate - that's one of the things I cannot stand! And that shitty fullness feeling you get from it also where you cannot eat for ages.

herpjunkie111's picture

I gotta do some shopping this evening so I'm gonna get some and try it.

press1's picture

Seriously dude its like discovering a whole new lease of life & world eating food that you could never enjoy before without getting the sides after - I have heard of the odd case where some people are too sensitive to lactose that they don't help but it seems to be the minority.

herpjunkie111's picture

I used lactaid brand before as a kid, I was so lactose intolerant back then a bowl of cereal messed my stomach up bad. It's gotten a little better since adulthood but I still bloat like crazy with whey, and like you mentioned it hurts the appetite too, so worth a shot for sure. Should've thought about it sooner, lol.

Well worth a shot mate - I pay £10 here for 90 tabs with a 5000FCC unit count per tab which I believe is the strength you want to be aiming for...

I'm about to grab some. I like to make protein/oat shakes before the gym but it's time consuming during the week when I'm trying to rush to get to the gym by 5:00am so I just ordered this to try:

It's under meal replacement but I'll be adding a scoop of carbolean - dextrose/maltodextrose/waxy maize and my beta-alanine to it.

Looks good mate - I've recently started eating oats/wholemeal bars and taking a good multi vitamin and to say I feel much better mentally and performance wise is a massive understatement!

herpjunkie111's picture

Yeah I've been cooking quick steel cut oats, 1/3rd cup dry in the microwave and letting them cool to room temp then put them in the blender with a whole banana and 30grams of whey as a preworkout shake, on the weekends, and I get an unreal workout and pump but can't fire up the blender during the week at 4:45am unless I really wanna make the wife unhappy, lol.

There are a lot of proteins out there. If lactose is an issue try egg or beef. Soy is ok but not as effective. I prefer Isolate.

If my knowledge is correct it looks like someone is about to turn EXP!

DfromPhilly's picture

Great call. My buddy in work has issues with lactose and responds really well to egg protein.

BunzOSteel's picture

Beef protein and egg protein are the two that I use, both are lactose free. All the beef ones I've tried mix up a bit foamy though but if you have whey issues they're worth it.

Especially if it's cheap

Whey isolate and micellar casein are my jams.

I tried hydrolozed whey once and almost threw up from the taste. Fucking awful!

Wouldn’t fuck with concentrate tho.

maddogg's picture

Hydrolyzed usually tastes terrible and needs to be about 50/50 with isolate to be palpable. I tried Dyamatize ISO100 Chocolate Peanut butter it’s more than 50% hydro and it tastes fabulous. I’m hungry while typing this and it sounds good. I only use the hydrolyzed stuff post workout cause the hydrolyzed begins to break down quickly it needs to be consumed on an empty stomach. If you mix it and let it sit for a bit it starts to go bad, don’t want it to go bad in your stomach. You can get it on Costco online only, not in store. It’s on sale every blue moon. 6.3 pound bag. For around $10 a pound. Right now Sams club has the Chocolate and vanilla for sale in store till 6/28 I believe, might grab a bag of Chocolate, just hope it tastes close to as good as the choc peanut butter.

Have you done the food intolerance analysis?
I am slightly positive for lactose (grade B), I use hydro proteins with water, and they don't weigh me down.
I have never tried to mix proteins, hydro is the most digestible for me.

DfromPhilly's picture

More power to ya. Maybe I just tried the wrong brand but hydrolized tasted so bad I’d never use it again lol.

Slowly's picture

I'm doing just fine. They melt with their eyes and do not weigh down their digestion.
Clearly, the brand plays an important role in product quality.

DfromPhilly's picture

Maybe I gotta try another brand. I got a very highly respected brand that tests really well on labdoor.com, but they also didn't have too many other ingredients and only used a little stevia as a sweetener, maybe another brand more concerned with flavor would make a difference.

maddogg's picture

Nutrabio is like that. The quality is excellent, but the taste not so good, not a whole lot of stuff added to it, but I still use it.

no I haven't, usually I get myprotein and its amazing lab tested protein but I was at walmart, and there was a wholesale nutrition near by and I just decided to pick up a tub because it was cheap.

It was cheap because of the concentrate protein. Not a real good source of protein. Kind of like getting the $1 chicken sandwich at McD's vs an actual chicken breast. Yeah they are both chicken but.........
