+ 1 Build muscle while having injuries!

ad

I have quite a few issues for the past 1-2 yrs: shoulder tendonitis and bursitis, piriformis (hamstring), quad issue, etc. (this probably doesn’t matter but I am female). I ice often, see a chiropractor and have incorporated stretching, foam rolling, diet is just fine, etc. I have been lifting about 75% of what I'm used to and I am not able to gain the muscle I had prior to these ailments; I need intensity and heavy weights. High rep/low weight doesn’t work well for me. I work out 5-6 days/wk; 2 days of upper/lower doesn't promote much growth for me. I’ve incorporated drop sets, super sets, time under tension, eccentric lifts, etc.. into my routine. I’m probably still doing too much volume because constantly in pain (and due for a break). ***My question is, has anyone worked around nagging ailments and what is the best solution to continue to gain more than just minimal muscle or just to “maintain."

I got my karma back, not from the member who made a mistake.
My friend, if I made a mistake, I can lose all of my karma. It's different when you're dealing with kids.

In your comment you say you have an injured elbow but 'continue to train like an animal' - Why wouldn't someone neg you for saying that obviously stupid comment?

Ozninjaguy's picture

Meh...don't overanalyse it mate. He's just being precious.

Ozninjaguy's picture

"I thought that it was a reasonable comment - certainly nothing in it to warrant a neg....but maybe someone read it wrong or hit the wrong key."

The above was my comment a couple of hours ago - now, when I read the latest comments and your replies - sorry Dude, but you need to grow up and take your paranoia elsewhere. It's an online forum, take it as it happens FFS, and your shit is railroading the OPs thread...strangely enough - it's not all about you..

press1's picture

In all of his comments he always talks as if its all about him Oz ...

Ozninjaguy's picture

He reckons he trains like an animal..I wonder if the animal he is referring to is a pussy ;-)

I don't think I wrote anything wrong.
Maybe someone has a problem with me? I don't know.
Thank you Sir.

Or maybe someone with a fat thumb on a cell phone...

Sir, I can give you more details in private. Thanks again

very true - break to me means losing what I have! lol

I can relate, I've been going through a similar situation for the past 2-2.5 years. I tried so much and then attempted to use various peptides, gh, deca and even bold trying to improve the issues. I got temporary relief and was able to maintain most of the mass. Eventually I had to accept what was tue reality for me and back off training a lot. I wouldn't go anywhere near my maxes, typically ~50% or even less. I've had to make sure stress was managed in life, sleep was 7-8 hours every night and nutrition was always on point. I would not workout 2 days in a row, it has always been one on and one to two off. I've lost around 15 lbs of muscle but I'm finally able to start legitimately healing. I've literally had to relearn how to lift and dramatically improve my mind muscle connection. I always tried to really focus on form and avoided ego lifting by but i now realize there was significant room for improvement.

It has been very hard and has made coping with life stress more difficult without having the outlet but after 2 years I'm finally making progress on allowing the injuries to heal and I feel I'm getting closer to being able to pushing things a little further. It's really hard to accept backing off but it's been great for my body and even psychologically.

At times enhancements may help minor injuries but when you have a serious one, or even worse, multiple ones at the same time, enhancements may end up making things worse in the long term.

Finding a GOOD physical therapist and deep tissue massage may help. From my experience though finding a quality DPT is difficult, especially one that works with you one on one through each session and isn't having a tech just move you through the exercise without giving an expert guidance. Massage therapist can be good but it's also tricky because they sometimes do weird things and you may not know it could exasperate the issue until it's too late.

I guess the best advice I can give is reallymlisten to your body and approach it logically and do what is really best and avoid letting the ego allow you to think something is a good idea when its actually not.

thx for the detailed reply. yup, that's my next step - a sports physical therapist but you're right, finding a quality one may be difficult

Double A's picture

I noticed one glaring omission. Do you have a nice, painful deep tissue massage therapist?

getbuff17's picture

I've tried that a couple times but choose to go the chiropractor instead due to the cost of both. I should look for more Groupons. Smile

You didn't mention if you are natty or not. If not try decca and TB 500. If that doesn't help I agree with Armwrestlingfiend: TAKE TIME OFF! Let thing heal and continue to stretch go to the chiropractor and consider a physical therapist!

getbuff17's picture

Yeah, natty. I've heard about TB 500 and have been tempted to look into it more. True - taking time off may be the only alternative at this point

“Constantly in pain”.. why would you train if your constantly in pain. You have to heal up first or you will make everything worse. Take time off.

I've had one serious injury, I ruptured two disc in my back.

So I have one good piece of advice for you, take it easy and give your body time to heal. If you don't all these minor injuries you've had will eventually coalesce into a back injury, over time your back compensates for weaknesses produced by other injuries. And when you pull a disc you don't have an option its a minimum month off the gym

Yes all those things can be worked around. Tendonitis, inflammation, and lower back pain can be controlled by stretching and turmeric. Just make sure u get them under control before stressing them out over a workout. Light weight higher reps helps me get through the recovery process.

Cold pressed Liposomal Turmeric works in a fraction of the time. That stuff is great for inflammation.

Why not let the injuries heal first then get back at it ?... all I see happening here is a constant injury/ pain if not allowed to heal . Everyone that lives this lifestyle will have setbacks and that’s just part of the game we play... throwing any aas at it isn’t the answer if you’re looking for any longevity in this game...heal up and keep going ...it’ll happen again, and again, unfortunately..learn to know when to keep pushing and when to pull back and take a break ....

getbuff17's picture

yeah, aas wasn't an option, that'll just make things worse. true - time off is the answer for sure.

Bearded_muscle's picture

When I can’t go heavy I go high reps.

I can’t shoulder press so I hit side laterals for high reps 3 times a week.

I can’t squat or dead so I hit hamstrings isolated one day and quads isolated another day.

Fuck right now I can’t bench so I’m doing cable flys as heavy as can be done without pain. I hate to say it but if you want it you WILL find a way. You can do this. It’s all up to you.

Certain anabolics CAN help but I am hesitant to advise you on this as I don’t know your history etc.. but do some research on your options.

Good luck.

getbuff17's picture

yup, I definitely use alternate exercises as you mentioned. really think it comes down to a long break (in the colder months!)
