Just curious if anyone here hunts. Or am I the only one from September to January who lives in the woods when I’m not working or hitting the gym?

Used to go out every deer season, but now Im too busy with business, and slaughter a steer every year. A 900lb (hung) Brahmvee feeds me, my wife and dogs for almost a whole year. Its crazy had no remorse shredding "terrorists" with a .50 cal, but feel sadness every year when those big guys get put down. They live good though, free to roam and plenty of good food.
Last years buck. Skinny neck, fat rack…how I like my women. Got some velvet still on his antler too.

I hunt and fish damn near all year birds, ducks, deer, small game doesn't really matter. My boys and I live on the water or in the woods.
Yup! Bird hunter and eat everything i shoot. There's recird sized big game here but I'm just too lazy to drag and butcher. The local places you can buy butchered beef...elk..bison...deer...hog...etc etc. Small game is just easier imo.
Lived a better life than any farm animal and died faster and more humanely than any farm raised chicken, cow, or pig. Plus I don’t really like fatty cuts of meat so deer and elk are perfect for my diet. Sadly I can’t kill enough per season to make it my sole meat source…
I need 3/year to last me and the wife. It’s not our sole source of protein, but it’s durn near. Only got 2 last year and the freezers been empty a couple months now. Ready for bow season to kick off!

We had to stop eating pork in my house after my wife watched some video of industrial scale farm raised pigs for slaughter. Industrial farming, while necessary to feed the population, is what is truly evil to animals.
I did some welding at a pig farm for slaughter. They're in spaces so small they have inches to move in any direction. When their food came, every pig screamed . Im pretty confident they're insane. The Piglets that dont grow to a certain size in a certain time frame are killed by someone grabbing the hind legs and slamming their heads against the floor...truly made me consider becoming a vegetarian.
Best protein source there is! Our state basically gives us unlimited doe tags, and a season from Sept to April.
April?! Goddamn. I’d be able to get my necessary amount with that kind of window. I just grind the entire thing. Mostly plain ground and about 1/4 as breakfast sausage. Deer sausage, even with fat added, is still leaner than that shitty jimmy dean at the store. My wife loves sausage, egg, cheese biscuits in the morning with that breakfast sausage
I typically make sausage in 50 lb batches. I do smoked sausage, summer sausage, and breakfast sausage. But we do a lot of primal cuts. I fill the freezer before I decide on sausage and jerky.
If you could just feel the jealousy through the internet… I used to do the primals but had kids and got lazy. Much easier to just slap tubes of ground on the pan and mix it with rice for all my personal meals. Or the occasional chili. There’s a maple pumpkin chili my wife loves that I make every fall. Sounds off putting but it’s delicious

Guns are illegal in the uk. So how would you even hunt?
Many people own shotguns and go pheasant, rabbit hunting etc. You need a licence for the gun which is very hard to obtain - have to have no criminal record or convictions, Police have to visit your property and make sure its extremely secure and alarmed directly to the police, secure gun cabinet etc.

I hunt for meat. I’m sorry if that offends you. I choose to organic meat from the land where I live instead of buying my meat from the grocery store. I could spend hours talking to you about conservation, habitat, endangered species, disease management, and on and on, but as soon as you commented I knew that it was pointless. It’s all good. So you put an arrow through lets say a Deer, you go over to it because it hasn't died instantly and its there laid on its side bleeding out and taking its last dying breaths wondering what its done wrong whilst looking at you - how does that not make you feel insanely sad or guilty about what you have just done??

Who said it doesn’t? But I also recognize that the state I live in is massively overpopulated with deer. Without culling the herd, deer would starve to death, disease would rise. Where I live you typically can’t drive more than a mile or two without seeing a dead deer on the side of the road from being hit by a car. But I must ask you, why keep this back and forth going? Are you vegan? Do you own a grocery store? Do you eat beef or chicken? Just wondering what your angle is here.

No, but I'm pretty sure it feels pretty bloody bad when its got an arrow stuck through its lung and is steadily suffocating to death. People who can do this and not feel sad about the suffering animal in front of them have No Soul whatsoever. I will never understand how anyone can get their kicks out of this sick shit.
Just out of curiosity. Do you think factory farms and the way animals are raised stuck in tiny cramped areas with little to no movement their whole life while being force fed stuff that is super unhealthy for them. To eventually be hauled to a processing plant, shot in the head with a bolt gun, then hung up, their necks slit, and shocked with electricity to be drained of all blood and relax the muscles, etc... Do you think that is all more humane and better for the animal than harvesting one that has lived a free and healthy life? Without hunting and conservation efforts, animals such as deer tend to become way overpopulated which leads to inbreeding and all kinds of genetic diseases, the herd becomes way more vulnerable to viruses, etc... A couple hundred years ago everyone had to harvest and process their own meat. I'm not asking this to be a smart ass, etc... Just legitimately trying to understand your perspective. We all come from different walks of life and from my side, it feels as if it is more humane and respectful of the animal to harvest one yourself with a well placed shot. Where you are aware of the weight of taking a life and what that means towards feeding your family. In comparison to being so disconnected you think meat just magically appears in packages in the store without animals being hurt. "I used that example because I seen a woman upset with hunters in a video because they could have went to the store and bought the meat where it was made instead of harvesting a animal for it."
There is a difference between an animal purely being bred and raised to be eaten as food or to lay eggs as a battery hen - as opposed to someone who goes 'hunting' because they enjoy Stalking and Hunting down a defenceless, innocent animal and then killing it. People don't go hunting because they 'Hate' or don't enjoy it - It's because they get a Thrill and Kick out of killing animals. Look, I knew I would be disagreeing with 90% of people on here when I wrote my first response to this forum post but I just cannot understand the psyche of people who enjoy this so called 'Sport'.
I understand what you are saying better now. I've never trophy hunted nor have I ever felt joy and happiness from it. I have a problem with those kinds of Hunters myself. You'll notice i referred to it as harvesting above, because to me it really is no different than dispatching a farm animal. There's no "sport" to it. When I was a kid I sort of enjoyed it because it made my family happy to have the meat. After several deployments though, my outlook on it drastically changed and I couldn't hunt for many years. I was being serious when I said I wasn't trying to argue with you. I just wanted to understand your perspective.

I tried Fishing once as a kid, and to be honest I hated seeing the fish having a hook pulled out of its mouth and it gasping for breath - I find it very upsetting watching things die.

You see pride in the kill and conflate that with celebrating death. Which I tried to explain above. Most hunters sanctify the death and take pride in a clean kill, a good kill.

Dressing an animal is still a reminder of the sacrifice that was made. An animal doesn't become meat until it's ready for the freezer.
You, sanctimoniously only see the meat. You can't appreciate where it came from like a hunter can.
The kill isn't about some sort demented joy in death and suffering and it's extremely insulting that you would think that the good people in this forum are heartless monsters gleefully killing Bambi and other Disney animals.
The pride in the kill, not the death, is a layered emotion based in a stoic independence, self reliance, skill, being a provider, stewardship, and respect for nature. Dare I say, communion.

Tell me something then, if 'Hunters' find it upsetting about the death that they have just caused - then why do they all have to take pictures of the Dead animal after it has been killed like the one above - I have seen countless pictures like these put up on these forums as if they are some kind of bragging rights and something to be proud of?

Most hunters (at lease the ones I know) do feel remorse and sadness. But there is also the other side of it that I get to feed my family.

Whitetail yearly (bow only), I have an elk tag but not sure if ill be able to use it this season, and doing a duck hunt in Nov.
I wouldn’t be able to take ducks over an elk. But I’m not a big duck guy.

Gotcha. As a former travel hockey/high school hockey parent and coach, I can relate. Thankfully my kids aged out so I got my hunting time back.
