+ 2 What Do You Think Is The Best Time To Do Cardio?

ad

Hello. I've been pondering on this question for some time now. I've been training for 5+ years but I'm yet to implement any real dedicated cardio in my workouts. I workout 5 days a week doing mainly compound lifts so was thinking of adding Cardio on my off days, say on a Saturday and Sunday. I'm not keen on the idea of doing fasted cardio in the morning on a empty stomach, so was thinking more in line of doing it after my first meals. Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks!

Whats most important is that your doing it whenever you can fit it in your schedule. If you have a lot of free time fasted seems to be optimal for LISS. If doing HITT its better to have food in you, and HITT will burn much more fat.

Fasted first thing in the morning hands down... sounds good but it's hell I dread it. But results speak for themselves I just keep my heart rate under 160 to target mostly fat and not burn muscle

Well that is interesting. I always go above 160. Are you saying above 160 puts you in an anabolic state where you start to burn muscle?

Gentauni's picture

Puts you in anaerobic, not ideal for burning fat.

so anaerobic meaning you are depleting your glycogen storage and aerobic, which is only using oxygen with no glycogen storage depleted. Would anaerobic not get to fat burning quicker. I know we are talking about burning fat. I am having trouble figuring out how to tie that do muscle growth/loss. I mean during a workout if I tear it down and go to anaerobic and use all my glycogen storage and start burning fat, would I not lost fat and then rebuild the muscle throughout the next 24-48 hours. Would that not build lean body mass. On the other hand aerobic would just be burning immediate storage blood or once that used, do you go to fat storage for fuel. Appreciate any input as I figure this our and read.....

Read that link I posted below that should answer some of your questions. A lot cardio and the concept of fat loss with it has a lot to do with the timing of releasing fatty acids and the body then burning that up for fuel. Timing and type of cardio are paramount to this.

That was a very good read, especially if you are trying to retain muscle as you trim. A lot of reading on the net just looks at losing fat and we get that confused. But as I workout and build muscle and ramp up that metabolism and gain LBM, that is totally different than traditional approaches of losing fight because you lose muscle and kill that metabolism at the same time. Its a tricky thing to figure out. That article definitely clarifies those issues. I have some more reading to do. Thanks for the help and answering the question.

I have been doing 15 min HIIT cardio before I lift usually not fasted. Currently trying to gain but great advice for when I cut.

One of the things that comes to my mind is to watch when you do the cardio and weight lifting after reading. You need all your energy to have a good weight workout and then cardio afterwards. If you do cardio too close and before your lifting session, you will lose stamina and strength for your weight training.

Here are my thoughts on the whole cardio issue. All cardio is not the same and the timing and type of cardio need to be taken in consideration.

One of my go to reads! Solid stuff as always! :-)

That's some really good information, I'll be sure to have a good read of it. Thanks!

It depends on your goals.
I have found that doing about 20 min of cardio AFTER i lift, gives me the most fat loss beinfit, while not hurting my muscle gains. I do cardio 4-5 times a week, which keeps me lean and cuts fat at a slow and steady pace.

I prefer this as well, but alternate between fasted cardio I’m the am & workout in the am followed by cardio

Agreed. I don’t get to do much fasted cardio during the week though, due to work. I usually have to workout at night (7ish). I do though do fasted cardio on the weekend.
It’s good to switch things up with your cardio and see how your body reacts.

vhman's picture

I do. I use the elliptical (bad knee) and the stair stepper.
I actually enjoy cardio now and don’t feel like I’ve finaihed my workout without it.

Cardio is more my expertise and I think the one area where alot of weight lifters would benefit if they used it but don't is the hill climb.

Never have I ever done one exercise which such regular, difficult consistency. It will cut you up into amazing shape when you're looking to cut down. Its exhausting work and it uses every last bit of energy you have. There is no "getting good" at the hill climb. It will always kick your ass.

Find a hill. Sprint up it. Rinse-repeat. 15 minutes of hard work is enough to feel exhausted.

Oh and to the original question, the best time to do cardio is when your ready to run meaning you are rested, have energy, and are focused. I find that light jogging/cardio gets much harder the bigger you get to sustain over longer periods of time so the hill climb is perfect because you get endurance over short bursts that can help under the bar.

High pace, high difficulty runs with short distance is the best for explosive strength and flexibility.

.....or resistance cardio.Strap a parachute and go.

Il do it 30 min in the morning on empty stomach then 20 min after training cardio is good to take up.the nutrients from your food intake and its healthy

I walk to work and back 5 days a week , an hour each way at a quick enough pace , that's my cardio haha . Some mornings I'll have breakfast and other mornings i eat when I get to work . So some days fasted and others not , It doesn't make a difference to me I find .

Jameshobbis's picture

I know you said your not keen but I see my best results fasted first thing in the morning 45 mins at a nice steady pace

True. From my research it makes sense to do cardio fasted then after meals. I just tend to feel more lazy in the morning that's why I train in the evening. I used to train 6 days a week but my new plan that I made I'm able to fit everything in around 5 days and do more, it works out so much better what I'm doing now. The only thing I dislike is rest days. I'd so much more prefer to train, but recovery is important I guess. This is why I've finally thought about adding in cardio now, gives me something else to work on..

Dave Palumbo says he likes his clients to do cardio sfter a hard workout. For a good 20 to 40 minutes then get your carbs and protein in !!!!!
And on off gym days = fasted cardio
