Cotto looks better than EVER!

ad

He should have hired Freddie years ago. He brought Miguel back to being the body destroyer he was on his rise to the top. That devastating left hook to the body that paralyzes your opponent with about a 3 second delay! Beautiful thing. Anyone see that fight? What do you want to see next for him? Stay at 160? Fight the top brass like Gennaddy Golovkin or demand a rematch with Mayweather? Maybe Canelo? Fire away! I want to hear this shit

I've always followed Cotto, and cringed when he moved away from his left hook to the body. I still will never understand why he would ever abandon such a devastating punch. I didn't see the fight from last weekend, but I have HBO so I'll see it for free on Saturday. It good to see Cotto getting the training and guidance he really needs. Moving forward I would love to see him fight Golovkin, but as you said he may be to much. That's what makes great fights though.

It's a shame what happened to Paul Williams. Talk about a guy that everybody was scared to fight. His length and reach at his weight would have made some great fights around the 147 to 160 weight... He was still fairly young too.

IrishMack's picture

If you watch the way Cotto fights he puts his body into every punch; every hit that landed sounded painful. Cotto is fast on the draw and fast to counter and Martinez was not ready for it in that 1st round. Cotto intimidated the shit out of martinez and thats what he wanted to do. Thats why martinez was so cautious after that but not enough.

I never thought I would see another champion of the world (WBC title holder is the recognized champ) actually afraid. I remember Frank Bruno losing the fight 24 hours before it started at the weigh in. Tyson looked at him with this death stare and an eerie excitement and said "I'm gona fuck you up!" It was over already. Fear set in. You're right. But that is exactly how Cotto got to the top. He abandoned that vicious body attack when he became an A list fighter. He pretty much went to Freddie Roach last year and said "I don't know how much I have left but I want you to finish my career out with me!" Freddie told him to stop being a Prima Donna and listen to instruction and he'll train him. Well it looks like a match made in heaven. He brought Miguel back to that throw back Jake Lamotta style fighter. The way the middle weights used to fight (in a phone booth). I'm actually excited to see what comes next. GGG is the top of the middle weight food chain along with Andre Ward. Ward can't fuck with Cotto but Gennady might be too much for him. Either way it's going to be an interesting year in the middle weight division. My division btw which is why I get so pumped!

hello i hope you are right about cotto i stop watching him and zab judah both in my opinion could have been where mayweather is now they are world class fighters that just lack something it is frustrating to watch

I understand why everyone wants to see that fight but I promise you it will be the most boring fight you'll ever see. Unless Floyd approaches it the way he did Maidana. It will be a technical mismatch. A compubox showcase of 75% connect rate of power punches and immaculate defense. It would be poetry in motion for ppl who know what it takes to get to that level and a boring chess match to everyone else. Manny will be systematically picked apart until he gets frustrated and takes risks like he did against Marquez. In which case he walks into a huge punch and doesn't recover. Stoppage for Floyd or a landslide decision

I talk a lot of shit about MMA but I'm just fucking around when I say they roll around half naked all oiled up and it's only gay if they make eye contact ;-P
I also respect anyone in any combat sport. It's the ultimate challenge. There is no team! No teammates to look to for help. Nobody but yourself. You have to dig deep and call on all your courage and strength. Jim Lampley said it best.

"You don't PLAY boxing! You do this....you fight for your life!"
-Jim Lampley

Want to find out what you're made of? Step in the ring or octagon with another man looking to beat you unconscious. You'll find out what you're made of then. It's my passion. I'm sick and twisted (so I've been told). I used to answer this question the only way I know how and it was the first thing that came to mind.

"Why do you do this? What are you gaining by fighting like this? It looks like it isn't worth it at all!"

Me: "Fighting makes my soul happy!"

Can't explain it any other way. But as to the Floyd comments. That shoulder roll is a very particular stance called the "Philly shell". You cut out more than 50% of your body as a target. Completely turn your body to the side, drop your elbow down around your ribs with the lead arm, elbow and forearm. Power hand up next to your face, elbow tucked arm cocked ready to fire! Standing in that position allows you to move faster and totally throw your opponents timing off. There is a hole in that defense however.

The movement is limited to the upper body. It has nothing to do with footwork. Floyd tempts fighters to head hunt by dropping his lead hand. It makes it appear as if his head is exposed. It's not. They head hunt instead of attacking the body. If they used their damn training they would never aim for the head. Aim for the center of the upper chest. You WILL land something. Watch Cotto go to the body instead of the head then open up for a head shot. This is what you need to do to beat Floyd.

One of Floyd's greatest defensive performances was early in his career vs Phillip Ndou. James Toney does a great job of this also. So many combos that can be made off of the shoulder roll.

PIN_CUSHION's picture

I completely agree. Everyone is saying Garcia should be Floyd's next fight, but I think it would end up like the Canelo fight. I think Cotto should get a rematch. Should make some $$ and that's what Floyd wants. Would also be an exciting fight IMO.

I was in the welterweight class right at the 150 cutoff. it will be an interesting year but Cotto has to work on leaving himself open like he does when he does his combo. He leaves himself open for almost a whole second and any fighter that will be studying him should be able to counter it. When he drops his right after a combo he leaves the side of his face and his mid wide open. Although its easy to say that when you not in the ring trying to block that. I'm old school so I get the fights recorded and then I watch them so I can pause and rewind, e.t.c. Old habits die hard. The wife hates boxing and really hates when I watch it; I'm standing up and pretending I'm in the ring, rewinding, lol.

Nitti's picture

He does that when he plants his feet. He only plants his feet when the other guy is hurt. Which is why I was screaming at the TV for Cotto to step back because Martinez is dangerous when he's hurt and he still has the power to knock anyone out with either hand. But I don't see Cotto opening up any other time. Not in the Delvin Rodrigues fight or this one. Freddie roach really tightened him up bro. Polished if you will. But talking about leaving himself open , fuckin Manny still drops his left hand and gets knocked off balance when he throws the left with authority. Fundamental mistake that NOBODY has capitalized on except Marquez. But it took him 4 times to figure it out. Lol

IrishMack's picture

I might have been referring to the Pedraza fight; let me look at that again.

it was a mixup; those pretty pink shorts got me confused.

Nitti's picture

Lmao! That mufukr loves pink don't he. You may be right. And it's possible I missed it. I key in on certain things and miss others. Which is why I watch a fight 10x before I decide what the game plans were and what happened in the chess match

IrishMack's picture

the wife went to work today so Im trying to play catchup; I got 12 out of 14 fights I have to watch starting by important to who gives a shit. I got Alice in chains playing in the background so I can match up a brutal punch to a hard hitting riff. I lead a lonely life.

Save me some time and let me know the lopez and hidalgo fight; I cant bear myself to even watch them two play my little pony with each other.

bhpokernola's picture

he wooped up on Martinez. damn and Martinez was saying he would knockout cotto and that cotto wouldn't make it past the 9th round. Cotto didn't talk shit. he just said okay we are gunna see.
seems like Martinez knew the future but it was his future and not cottos!! sick fight

Nitti's picture

You guys don't follow boxing? What just MMA? U like watching dudes roll around all sweaty on the floor? uhhh huh

PIN_CUSHION's picture

Lol, big boxing fan here, unfortunately missed this one. I don't think he'll get a Mayweather rematch, Floyd isn't big on giving them. I've always liked Cotto. You think Golovkin is a big enough name now? I know most true fans know him, but isn't a household name just yet. Guess that would put him on the radar.

Nitti's picture

Gennady can handle any A list fighter in the division. Big enough? No! But another paper champion knockout and belt heist (like Andre' Ward maybe) and Gennady is right in the conversation.

Lilbear's picture

That was not a fight. Poor guy was falling from fear in the first two rounds. Cotto looked good last night, I would like to see him fight mayweather. Cotto looks like a monster coming off a hard cycle.

Nitti's picture

It's his natty weight. He cuts down to fight at welterweight. Mayweather said he's the toughest opponent he's ever faced. And don't forget the 2 Castillo fights. Mayweather had trouble. Cotto dominated through and through. Martinez is finute. And I must disagree about that not being a fight. That was a Boxing lesson if I ever saw one. Cut off the ring. Counter with surgical precision. Circle right and force him into that left hook. A very well thought out game plan.

Lilbear's picture

Lol, looked more to me like he was a punching bag. It looked to easy for cotto. He looked good.

I would love to see cotto knock out may-weather.

Nitti's picture

Pacqiauo already knocked him out once. But that was a much different Miguel Cotto. Still all shonghad from the Margarito fight when he got beat up with Paris plaster hand wraps. It's like getting hit with glass ashtrays. Hurts a lot more than it's supposed to. If they (PAC and Cotto) fought now, I think the outcome would be much different. Since Floyd says Cotto was his toughest opponent ever. Maybe now a rematch can go forward. Cotto just raised his stock immensely. PAC and Cotto won't fight again. Politics of the game. HBO and show time won't collaborate and won't let their fighters stray
