+ 1 Decided to start training for Powerlifting on a Comp level
Ok guys;
After a lot of thought I decided to try Powerlifting for competition instead of leisure. I have a few trainers I know that dabble in it so starting today we are going to dive into training. I did have a few questions to ask so I'm more prepared. Even my wife is behind me although she tells me she hates the way big muscular guys look and after convincing (arguing) her for about an hour she is comfortable with me gaining another inch of muscle everywhere.
- I am only 42 next month; 205 lbs and 5' 7" What level would I sign up for? I do plan on adding a little more weight maybe 20 more pounds and muscle I hope.

Do you guys know any workouts besides the basics that will help me achieve? The 1st meet is in December and I am starting now. I have a decent foundation so I'm not scared to get wet.

From some of the studies i did and reading the winners, the basic bench press I need to be near is 460 pounds and the deadlift somewhere in the range of 800. Squats; holy shit somewhere close to 800 and even 1000.

I am a TRT patient so prior to the comp I have to be off and out of my system, so I know I will lose some strength and size. It concerns me a little because the crash might hurt. They do not care that I take it medically, it's clean or nothing.

What should I be shooting for max before the cleanup?
Thanks guys, appreciate it.

I did competitive power lifting for 6 years. I have been out of the game for a while when it comes to competing, but I still lift like a power lifter most of the time. From what I'm reading you will probably end up in the 220 lbs, class. You will go in as a novice lifter and just try to get some personal bests for your first meet. As far as records go. All depends on where you looking. There are drug free organizations, but they typically make your take a polygraph test after your lifts. So you might want to look at an open organization. As far as gear goes. Knee wraps, bench shirt, squat suit, heavy high ankle boots, lots of chalk, baby powder to slip into that shirt and suit, and of course the heavy belt. Gear is going to get kinda pricey so don't go into sticker shock when you order. Look up West Side Barbell or West Coast Barbell. That is Louis Simmons and Maek Bells places respectively. West Side is legendary and Mark Bell was in one of our favorite movies Bigger Faster Stronger. Mark has great videos on youtube and can give you some idea on what the training is like. Good luck sir and if you have any other questions send me a FR and I will be more then happy to help. Later
Awesome, I appreciate the advice. Just this week I switched up my workout program and now I'm only doing as much as weight as I can for 3 reps of 3-8. it is kicking my ass but I need to be as ready as I can be. I will look that stuff up though. I plan on doing a cutter for the spring and then get back to heavy ass weight to build my foundation better.
Better get some powerlifting gear. Belt, warps, suit, bench shirt that kind of shit. Get your form down before you start getting to crazy. Esp on deads.
I have wrist wraps; belt; but no bench shirt or suit. Planning on getting those this week coming up. My form is a litttle fkd but today that was what I worked on and for the next 2 weeks that is the plan. I'm going to go to a few meets each month and check out what my competition will be and what they give points for.
suits suck ass lol...get some knee warps for heavy leg days. i know a few things from my power lifting buddy so shoot me a message if you need some ideas. i need to see what my maxes are at been like 6 weeks or so since i maxed on bench dead and squat
I have a long struggle ahead of me. I never workout my legs; but I was able to at least get to 245 today on my squats. That sucks and now I feel like a 12 year old girl. I started deadlifting at a minimum weight of 180 and let me tell you the pain my hamstrings are insane. I was out of breath a few times and the stars were getting bigger. I am starting some changes tomorrow.
