I.B.S (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) Whilst Being On Cycle.

ad

Hi Mates.

Contracting I.B.S (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) at anytime in your life is NOT one of life's experiences ANYONE should have to experience and if there are any of my Brothers/Sisters-In-Iron experiencing it right now, this posting is aimed DIRECTLY at you.

I, myself, first contracted I.B.S almost twenty years ago. I had just started my own haulage company in the UK and I was working every hour the good Lord sent to make it a success. My diet, as you can imagine, was atrocious. Road side diners. Bacon sandwiches for lunch, dinner and snack times, whenever I could spare five minutes to stop to eat and GALLONS of Coke. (The soda). I'd ALWAYS have a 2-ltr bottle of it down the side of the drivers seat, in easy reach so I could just swig from the bottle as I drove the highways and byways from delivery to collection.

Now the ugly bit: My I.B.S came on one morning with a stomach ache. Not the usual, 'OOO. I'm hungry', kind of ache. No. This was just a heavy, dull feeling in the upper part of the stomach, just under the rib cage. Then came a burp. "OHHH. SWEET LORD. DAMN. I STINK", kind of burp. Just think of the smell of REALLY rotten eggs and you'll understand. For the first week or so I just put it down to a bad burger and just put up with it. I got some antacid tablets from the local chemist/pharmacy and kept chewing on them to try and disperse the feelings of the heavy indigestion. They'd work, up to a point. But, of course, they NEVER addressed the issue.

After putting up with the bad breath, the uncontrollable breaking wind, (Which had no odour to them whatsoever), for 3-4 weeks, it was becoming an embarrassing issue whenever I came into contact with other people. When the burps came up, they were coming out whether I wanted them to or not and they'd clear the rooms at times. I'd blame it all on food poisoning, make my apologies and leave them to deal with the lingering smell of my Death-Breath, (As I'd started calling it).

I HAD to go to the doctor to find out what was going on. As soon as I walked into the doctors room a burp came out and the first thing the doctor told me was, (BEFORE I EVEN SAT DOWN), "Wow. You certainly have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, don't you?" As soon as he said that I thought I was dying. I'd never heard of the infliction before. "Is it cancer?" I asked him. (My father had passed away about 2 years prior from cancer, so I was still questioning everything whenever I got sick). And that's when he told me about how my body was building up the gases in my intestines and how it releases the bloating effects through the breaking of wind and the burps etc. He didn't have to run any tests on me. I.B.S is a symptomatic diagnosis issue. And unfortunately, there is NO-KNOWN CURE.

My doctor diagnosed that I'd contracted the I.B.S through stress I'd been having with me starting my new business up and stuff and he recommended that I changed my diet from all of the carbohydrates I was digesting on the road to a more gentle, healthy approach. He recommended natural yogurts, fruit, fish, chicken, (More protein foods) and a regular supply of breath mints to address the bad breath. And that was the diagnosis and recommendations to address it, in one simple doctor's appointment. The initial bout for me lasted about 5 months before the symptoms disappeared and everything returned to normal. I've had it several times since and it will usually disperse after a few months of room emptying or being kicked out of the master bedroom by the Mrs because a burp had escaped while I'm sleeping and she who must be obeyed breaths it in (LOLOL I shouldn't laugh. But it does make me laugh at times LOLOL)

And now, almost twenty years later, my I.B.S returned FOR NO REASON. I can't say I'm stressed out, for any reason. I'm currently having tests carried out over the next few weeks because of me coming up to my 1st year anniversary of being diagnosed with my lung cancer. But as I've already had my surgery, to me, I feel like I'm cancer free and kicking life in the butt again. Yes, I am currently on a 16 week bulking cycle. But nothing too heavy. I'm lifting good at the gym, which is a MUST for me. My diet consists mainly of high protein intake from fish, chicken etc and I ONLY allow myself red meats 3 times a week. So why the Death-Breath has returned, I have NO IDEA.

SIDE NOTE: Being on a bulking cycle, FOR ME, brings along some bloat in the abdomen and along with the heavy gases accumulating in the stomach from the I.B.S itself, the pains and cramps involved can be a b**ch to deal with at times.

I have heard of individuals finding SOME relief from digesting the Pro-Biotic yoghurts available from the supermarkets. They supposedly have something to do with the bacterias contained within the yoghurts, aiding the bacteria in the digestive system, but I haven't spoken/conversed with any individual who has themselves used such products to aide their I.B.S.

MAYBE someone here on Eroids, who also suffers from I.B.S at times have themselves used such Pro-Biotic products themselves and have found relief/no-effects from their consumption who can comment on them?

Every piece of advice/remedy/solution will help to bring relief to the victims of the dreaded, 'Death-Breath'.

I have Ulcerative Colitis, which obviously is not IBS, but does involve similar symptoms along with some other "fun" ones. The one thing I would say is either stay away from orals altogether or if you run them only run for short periods of time (2 to 3 weeks) max.

Hey brother I deal with gas issues myself. Not farting or anything just a lot of rumbling after I eat a gassy food like broccoli ect.. At one point three years ago I couldn't drink milk all the sudden....or eat red meat or anything that is hard on the digestive system. I still stay away from red meat because my body just won't digest it. Okay so is your ibs constipation or diarreah? I had my journey with probiotics and I don't think there that effective but I've only tried up to 50million active bacteria. They say to help ibs or related issues to use at least 2 billion active bacteria.

I am all of a sudden getting red meat issues too. I still try to get it into me, don't get me wrong. But damn, it seems to just sit there, NON-Digesting for hours on end. MAYBE my body has just gotten used to such a high protein diet and it doesn't want to put in the extra work of digesting high carbs? (Just a thought, of course).

The I.B.S is more burping gases and build up of gases within the body that is accumulating above the belly button and below the rib cage than rear end blow outs. One MAJOR pain with the gases is I had a Stent Filter put in place last year, just above the belly button, to catch possible blood clots within my system. Bowel movements themselves are still pretty regular and consistently consistent in texture too.

I'd heard that the Pro-Biotic bacterias need to be in the Billions rather than the millions. From my understanding it works out to approx. 4 yoghurts a day to get the necessary amounts. Doesn't sound like much, but that a LOAD of yoghurt.

It's just REALLY annoying why this issue has arisen again. I am NOT depressed. MAYBE a little stressed with all of the tests these past few weeks,m but NOTHING I can't deal with. Laying on a bed being scanned. Having a few blood tests. Cranial scans for my seizures. Nothing I haven't already had in the past.

It just doesn't make sense, Mate.

Okay brother try using some konsyl(get it at Walmart,Walgreens,ect...) it's a fiber mix. I know your thinking fiber=gas and you right. It's actually a bulk forming laxative the will put most of the gas in the stool and when you have a bowel movement it will relieve you considerably. It has a lot of other advantages also like lowering cholesterol and preventing heart disease. Bro this drink changed my life. I drink it twice a day about 10 and 10. I never drink it after I workout because I know by muscles are getting most of my food. Good luck brother.

I have just done a search on the Walmart website and I found the capsule form of Konsyl.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Konsyl-Fiber-Capsules-100ct/15250006

MAYBE this could be another option on your advise for me to try?

As you obviously know the pains of the bloat, your further advice would be appreciated, Mate.

Yes when I first started getting gassy(around 25) I lost around 30lbs because I was afraid to eat enough to maintain because it was so painful. See I've never been able to find the caps but I would definetly try them. If you don't like the caps you can just pour the powder in about 8 oz of water bottle I shake mine instead of stirring it. I believe that dose by caps is 4-6 caps.

Have you heard about gluten free diet?

JustAMate's picture

Could be an alternative source for me. Thanks for the idea, Mate.

smoke a bowl. seriously. if you live in a state where you can get a weed card you might as well try it. having ibs is a legit reason for medical marijuana use.

JustAMate's picture

LOLOL My step son told me the exact same thing yesterday when we were taking about it, Mate LOLOL

I have NEVER used marijuana in my life. I can't stand the smell of the stuff. But I'm sure it smells better than my Death Breath to everyone else around me (LOL)

manbearpig's picture

Ah lol. Smell can depend on strain. A lot of it can obviously smell skunky. But I did try this one interesting strain that smelt like straight blueberries before. Lol.... I tend to eat edibles most of the time. The smell and smoke isn't really an issue from edibles.

Now you see why I come to my Brothers-In-Iron, here on Eroids, for everyday advice.

I, 'Thought', that every form of cannabis gave of the same odours.

One learns something new everyday from the experiences of the more educated, Mate.

Just went to the doctor with my girlfriend and the doc said she has ibs. Doesnt seem to be as bad as u have it but the dr gave her linzess and apparently foe many peopls its life changing. I kno she has been feeling much better with pain bc it allows her to go to the bathroom which she would usually go maybe once a week. Ita worth a shot bro hope this helps

JustAMate's picture

My doctor was going to issue me with the Linzess pills, but when he told me that it would help stop my diarrhea and I told him I didn't have issues going to the bathroom, he decided against it. Thank you for the heads up on it though and PLEASE pass on my best regards to your Lady. (I feel her discomfort, Mate).

I have Crohn's which they said was IBS for years. I imagine you've been tested for IBD? IBS is stress related if that is really what it is. Your body has serotonin receptors in the stomach and stress increases this signaling cause the symptoms just like the nervous shits people get. They usually throw some antidepressants at the issue cause of the serotonin link. I say benzos such as Valium of Klonopin can greatly help in these instances.

JustAMate's picture

I'm trying to stay away from anti-depressants because I TRULY do not feel depressed. I've had REALLY bad depression in the past so I can recognise the difference in my feelings and my thoughts. But MAYBE the ingredients WITHOUT the dulling effect ingredients may work, IF they are available in other forms.

You have crohn's, i'm suspected with a related to crohn desease that attack muscle and joints, i can pretty much say gear keep me going, how does it affect you?

pattar's picture

My UC improves greatly when I take testosterone..not sure of the reason.

Muffins's picture

I contributed a lot of my success with Crohn's to steroids. I am currently in remission and life is really good.

Good to ear that i'm not alone.
Good luck!
If you don't mind I will send you a FR, i have questions to ask you about it

Igi's picture

wow that does not sound like fun man. Sorry that you're going through that. I don't have anything close to that but I definetely am on the toilet 4-5 times a day just because of the amount of food i eat. I get gas really bad from protein shakes especially and if everyone is lucky, they don't smell too bad.. but sometimes.. gad damn i can't even stand it.

Hope it gets better for you bro.. good luck.

Igi

LOLOL Thank you, Mate. I understand the protein double tap can be a room clearer at times.
