How to ask for a raise? NEED HELP!
So the beginning of October I will have been with my company for a year. And in that year I have become the lead of my shift. I take the responsibility's of the shift and make sure the "costumer" is happy along with "leading" the other staff to make sure all the daily activities are done, including all my bosses crazy cockamamie tasks are fulfilled. I have never once balked at a single task I have been asked of and have carried out my duty's very well. I have been the unofficial Lead for over 6 months now. I say unofficial because to the company the official lead is another guy but its a 24/7 operation and me and him do the same thing he is just "official". And with is official title came a raise.
Now I can do everything this job requires and do all it requires, while other staff sit on their ass and do NOTHING, mind you these guys and girls MAKE More than me, I'm a young guy 23, and was hired at a pay that at the time was awesome but now I have come to find out these other staff make 1-2 dollars more than me, no more education than I have and considering, WAY less experience than me.and he has me IN CHARGE of them. granted I need to do a better job at policing them better.....im a very passive person, something im working on, but I "grew up(on the job)" with these guys and now I'm kinda not their boss but supervisor
My boss comes to me with everything because he knows he can trust me and I will get it done.
Im slowly starting to realize that my boss, who has a lot of pull and influence cant really "give" me a raise, its and HR/ CEO? director/ blah blah blah thing, now I know the 1-2 people that can make this happen(my bosses bosses boss etc)....its a cooperate company....but I'm fairly confident they don't know I make as little as i do....sooo
how should I go about asking for this raise....like I said Im 23 and am trying to stay humble but its really frustrating me when im stressed because shit is hitting the fan and the guy sitting on his phone next to me is doing nothing and making more...
I don't have much life experience and want to know the professional way to do this
please help and feel free to ask questions

To be real honest bro, kinda just have to be greatful for just having a job. So, technically you cant get too upset. Like most have stated already, they will work you at that pay rate because its benificial to the company. You do have to stand up, though but not in an aggressive manner. You have been there a year have you had your 1 year eval? Thats the time to explain it. If you dont get that raise dont be mad though, they may look at you as expendable and hire some one that will make less and still be happy. Keep working hard eventually it will be noticed, if all else fails look for a higher paying position within that company in another location. Its hard but you, gotta keep truckin and your time will come. None of us get paid what we feel were deserve in life, welcome to the club homie. Keep ur head up!
What Pank said is dead on.. why pay for the cow when you are getting the milk for free. At this point you have no choice but to ask for the pay increase that should have came with the extra job duties or request that they take those duties back. I assure you that the owner, HR, CEO and your boss know just how much you make. Labor cost is one thing that every up level manager is aware of and it's extremely important to the operation. The only thing I would double check on is... does this company give a raise if you change positions or after the first year. For example the company I am working for just changed almost everything, my title, the company I work for... no raise was given at the time.. responsibilities will be changing in the future but haven't at this point.. however once the year mark hit was I given a substantial raise. SO I would double check then I would have a meeting with upper management.
Your first mistake was taking on extra responsibility without the title and pay. Why give you a raise and title bump when you are doing all the work for nothing, that is smart business for them not for you.
In your hurry to please and impress you didn't think about how you were shorting yourself. So what you must do is go back to your boss and politely and nicely ask to have less responsibility, and you say the issue is I realize if something goes wrong I have no official position to cover me. Also the extra responsibility without the compensation is frustrating to me because I see no real room to advance myself sine I am doing the work already there is no need for a new position to open up. I really enjoy this company and want to be here for a long time and serve it to the best of my ability but I know I also need to have room to advance so that I don't become discouraged. Which will affect my performance. Then you say thank you for listening to me.
Your one of they guys I wanted to reply to my post, if you notice I sent you a fr 10 min after writing this post along with others, thanks for the advice
No problem brother FR accepted
It's way too late for him to back out now. I've watched coworkers get moved in position with no raise or title change try and get out of it after a while they were replaced. But you were correct in your 1st sentence; biggest mistake is taking on more responsibility that comes with a title and not get the title or pay raise. he is pretty much fucked unless he puts up a good argument why he deserves more money. If they do not give him the money it's time to update the old resume and look for another job.
If he approaches it right it could work still I have seen it work for others. But they may also say no and it leave him with the choice to stay or go. I don't believe if he goes with respect they will can him for asking. It depends on the finances and the integrity of the management. Good bosses respect forth rightness with respect.
That's true, but good bosses in this economy are very hard to find. Hopefully whatever path he chooses is the right one, but keep the resume updated hehe.
I definitely agree with that lol.

It will set itself right from there
Your boss CAN get you a raise don't believe the bullshit. As long as you have proven you know what you are doing and he praises you you set up a meeting and let him know that you appreciate everything he has trusted you with and show him how well you are doing in your position. Do market research on the average pay for a person in your position as well and print it out. Show him any and all documents or work you have done that was above schedule or performed below budget. It makes it easier because you now have ammunition and when you read it to yourself you can boost your confidence. That's really how you will get your raise. Go in the office with a shit ton of confidence and be direct/straight to the point. DO NOT SAY YOU KNOW OTHERS ARE MAKING MORE MONEY THEN YOU. You will punch yourself in the face. At the end of the day it's about you not anyone else. Puff your chest out and keep telling yourself you deserve it and get straight to the point. You might not get the whole amount you want but you will get a little something to wet your beak.
As a manager I feel much better about giving raises if the employee has done a great job in presenting their case for increased compensation.
Some things I look for:
-Attendance
-Proof of increased performance / employee or team output.
-Market pay rates for your position
-Things you've done outside of work to increase your value to the company. Books you've read, classes you've taken, social networking to promote the business...
-Are your project and tasks done on time and on budget?
Tell your boss you'd like to set up a time for the two of you to meet to review your responsibilities, priorities and compensation. I don't suggest doing a "pop-in" asking to talk about these things. Give him /her a heads up on what's on your mind so they can be prepared for a real discussion.
my $.02
All good points. I have 180 people reporting to me. A few things I may add:
waltrIs there already some kind of policy for porfomance evaluations?
Kinda, I'm due for a yearly raise which is kind of an insult I think it's like .41 cents......I'm in charge of guys that make 2 bucks more than me....my boss said when I brought this up to him " when your year comes up ill " push for more"
That's kinda bullshit I feel he should WANT to give me more than he pays those slackers
waltrDon't jump too far ahead of yourself, companies want long term employee's. Turnover is a killer cost wise and 1 year isn't very long to work somewhere. I'm sure if you continue along the path you seem to be heading good things will come your way with time.
Nobody goes from stock clerk to CEO in 1 day. Remember that.
Tell him your birthday is coming up soon and you'd like a raise for your Bday to break the ice and see how he reacts. I'm sure he realizes the work your doing and knows this is coming, so just be cool about it and tell him it would be nice to see a pay increase and you could use the extra money for bills and whatnot. I'm sure he'd be happy to help you out since you're doing such and exemplar job.
