+ 6 Let the isopropyl alcohol dry before pin.

ad

I overheard a conversation at the gym last night (you really shouldn't talk where others can here you, but that's another conversation). A young guy was talking about how his pin site was red and possibly infected. He stated that he had poured isopropyl alcohol over his pin site before and the site was soaking wet, so he didn't know how he could of gotten an infection. There could of been many reasons to why he got an infection, but one of the reasons could of been that he didn't let the alcohol dry before pinning.
Isopropyl alcohol is used for an antiseptic because of it's DRYING properties, not because the wet alcohol kills the germs. Bacteria and viruses are killed on skin when isopropyl is applied and then is dried. Isopropyl alcohol has a high evaporation rate and it is this drying property that actually kills the "germs". These microscopic, living creatures need water to survive (the water within their cells). When isopropyl alcohol is applied to the skin, it evaporates and actually sucks the moisture from the bacteria and kills the germs.
There can be many reasons for PIP and infections, but letting your site dry completely should be a standard step. Sorry if this is "common knowledge", but make sure you swab your pin site and let it dry completely before you pin.

I def let it air dry first. If not it stings going in. Usually I wipe the alcohol prep pad on the injection site and then wipe my fingers for a safety measure even though I wash my hands previously and then I fill the syringe with whatever substance(s) I am using and when time comes to inject the site is dry.
Good Luck and get big BOYS

Ive always let it dry first, and not by blowing on it. This post is very informative ,thanks for putting it up! Ive noticed you contribute a ton to eroids. I didnt know the precise mechanism by which the germs are killed, i thought it was the alcohol. But thanks again!

Don't forget, the idea isn't to kill the bacteria and leave it in place. you want to kill it AND wipe it away. When being trained to give IV's and injections, you are taught to start in the middle with the alcohol swab and then work your way out in ever widening concentric circles. Ideally you also have a second swab to make one more pass from the middle straight out. This process both kills and removes anything present

I rub the liquid alcohol on the injection site, let it dry, then rub it with an alcohol swab before injecting. I noticed if I don't let the liquid dry, I get a lot of pain when injecting. I'd imagine some gets in the wound.

I just want to comment on what your saying about the alcohol drying. Not only should u let the alcohol dry before you pin make sure that you use 70 percent or higher because anything under this will not destroy most of the bacteria. im not meaning you personally just adding to what your saying. good post

Exactly. The higher the percentage, the better the anticeptic/drying. Thanks for adding that.
