How do you split your training?
ad
Title pretty much says it all, I've always done the whole:
Push, Legs, Pull 3 day split
recently though I started to give shoulders a day on their own.
Theres this huge MOFO in my gym that tains,
Chest and Back
Legs and shoulders
bis and tris (arms)
I dont see how someone could train back and chest in the same day, two big as muscle groups but heck its working for him lol
So how do you guys train and why?

I do a variation of what your big MOFO friend does. Its a Weider principle Ive read to combine these groups and quantitative-wise (# of sets) makes a logical balance for what I do. Doing the back after the chest works fine, but if you try to superset back/chest or try to bench after working the upper back you wont be able bench as much.
I've done so many different training methods. total body in the form of the 5x5. And an upper/lower split. Body part per day: Legs, Chest, Back, off, Shoulders, Arms. Chest/Back, Legs/Shoulders, Arms. Chest/tri, Back/bi, legs/shoulders. There are so many ways to do it. I like total body as it concentrates on the compound lifts as well as upper/lower however with upper lower it's easier to include more isolation movements. Currently I'm doing a body part per day routine. The only I dislike is trying to shove all of my leg exercises into leg day. So on shoulder day I actually begin with Front Squats and Deadlifts then go on to shoulders where on leg day my main two lifts are back squat and RDLs. I don't like doing Deads on my back day because I'm either too exhausted to go as heavy as I like at the end of my workout or if I do it first it fatigues and affects my other exercises. And I do a lot of volume on my leg day already with Squats, RDLs, Leg presses, etc. and I would not be able to heavy on front squats either. That is my reasoning for throwing them in on shoulder day.
Here is my split

That's a huge amount of volume.
SpyVFull body Day on Day off. I'm typically in the gym between 2 and 3 hours. Progressively overload and deload on a per lift basis.
Mon-Upper body A
Tues-Lower body A
Wed-Arms/forearms
Off
Fri-upper B
Sat-lower B
Off
Repeat....an upper body workout would look like this. Military press s/s w pull ups s/s w db bent over lat raises. 5 tri sets 12,10,8,8,6.... Then 5 tri sets of flat db press s/s w db pullovers s/s close grip cable rows seated. Reps 12,10,8,8,8...1 min rest n between tri sets. It is really high intensity. My fav.workout !
Mon- delts, triceps, abs
Tues- back, rear delts
Wen- off/ easy cardio
Thursday- chest, biceps, abs
Fri- off/ easy cardio
Sat- legs
Sun- off
HIT
Chest/Back
Legs
Day Off
Shoulders
Bi's/ Tri's/ Forearms
Day Off
Repeat......
thanks for all the replies, Interesting to see the different types of splits you'll have. I see some of you like the HIIT, never done it myself and dont know much about it I'll look into it.
Mon: Chest/Calves
Tues: Biceps/Triceps/Forearms
Wed: Back/Shoulders
Thur: Glutes/Quads/Hams
Fri: Cardio (HIIT)
Sat: Compound day (Full Body) - Deadlifts, Dips, Pullups, Squats, Bench Press
Sun: Rest
I dont isolate abdominals, I get a great abdominal workout indirectly from deadlifts and such.
I train heavy for 2 weeks then I train for hypertrophy for 2 weeks and repeat. After 8 weeks I take a week off.
For my routine this upcoming week: (((changes each week)))
Monday - Back and Hamstrings
Tuesday - AM Chest and Biceps PM 15 minute hiit
Wed - Quads and Calves
Thurs - 20 minute hiit
Fri - Back and Hamstrings
Sat - Delts and Triceps
Sun - 20 min hiit
Abdominals before cardio if I feel like it lol
All workouts contain extreme tension with each contraction and extension of the muscle.
I might look like a bitch not doing HEAVY weights but hey I get shit done
I train each muscle every 5-7 days.. Its mostly like this.
Mon-Chest
Tues-Legs
Wed-Back
Thur-Shoulders/Traps
Friday-Arms
Sat-(Lagging parts like legs and chest for me)
I do Abs 3xs a week
And Cardio at the moment is about 5xs a week.
Always lifting HEAVY and maybe add some drop sets at the end of some sets..mostly all compound movements.
I let diet and cardio cut me so i try to keep the weights heavy.:)
Thats what i was thinking of changing my routine to. But sat n sun off. Do you do the cardio before after or at a seperate time?
Yea theres times i take the whole weekend off if im all beat up from the week...
I do AM cardio on empty OR after my workout, either one of those..., but since im really trying to cut down ima start doing both AM cardio and after my workout 30 minutes each.
how long have you been on this routine?
Like the past 5 months.
Right now its 2 parts per day, except...
Chest and Bis
Back and Tris
Quads, Hams, Glutes
Shoulders, Abs and Calves
Go through them all Heavy, 1 rest day, then go through them again high rep.
I like the idea of getting the Bis and Tris as Primaries one day and secondaries another day.
I like that split a lot, never though about getting the bis and tris as primaries and then secondaries.
