Some insight into the "epidemic" of ADHD and the education system in general

takes 3-4 mins to get going.

Goth's post got me thinking about this once again.... and Noid I have to disagree with your response in that thread. What you said would be true IF 90% ( pulling a number out of my ass just a guess ) of the kids on these meds had an actual illness - but anecdotal evidence suggests the vast majority do not. I have a BS and during finals weeks I used the drugs to come out on top, you pretty much have to the way it's set up ( the ridiculous work load - the information was not hard to learn ) unless you can study for 8-10 hours a day without help.... I can't. I never took them for more than a week or so though at a time. I know several friends from college that have been on this shit since the dawn of time and some seem to be psychologically neutered, no creativity very little to no complex reasoning, a complete lack of any form of expression or even common sense in some instances. A few of the more severe ones I've come across are essentially empty vessels emotionally - but they could very well be on more than ADD meds I don't know what all doctors have been ramming down their throats. But hey, they are all excellent at regurgitating information they MEMORIZED, not learned, from their textbooks because that's what standardized testing teaches us to do, there is only one answer, this is it, and don't think about it any further. Everyone on the stuff doesn't turn into a zombie but I'm here to tell you from being at a very populated and academically competitive university for nearly 4 years ( 2008-2011) many are indeed fucked up, probably permanently. It's blatantly obvious just walking around campus to the trained eye how many prescription pill addicts are walking around. I'm so very thankful my Mom was smart enough to tell the doctor to fuck off when he said I needed Ritalin at 6 years old. She kicked my ass and said something along the lines of pay attention in school or I'll kick your ass again. Oh look, it worked.

The speaker is Ken Robinson, youtube his name you'll find many more, and complete since the video I posted in an excerpt, compelling cases he makes regarding education.

my son has autism bud, i know what the fuck im talking about. with out abilify he is an emotional wreck all day long, screaming and crying and angry and anxiety just shaking with emotion. hes nine, it started when he was 4 and is progressively getting worse, I whipped his ass at first cause thats what my mom did to me, it made it worse! I took 4 classes to learn how to deal with him, because i thought I could beat it out of him. hes like a CD with a scratch in it, he gets stuck on something and cant let it go no matter what you do to him. hes all fucked up, half the time im so mad at him I could scream the other half i feel bad for him cause he has no friends, all the kids are mean to him and all his motor skills are fucked so he shakes and cant keep good balance, he cant tie his shoes or button his buttons. he also suffers from ADHD and wont shut up, cant focus on homework even if you hold all his privileges over his head till he is done. we havent put him on narcotic MEDS by choice, we had to learn how to deal with him first and come down to his level, which at nine is equal to a 4 or 5 year old. but we are running out of options and have been struggling with the decision to move forward with narcotic MEDS. So I dont give a fuck what you think, what you have learned with your BS or who you know thats on MEDS. this subject I live with everyday so watch what you say to me!

totally uneducated with these illnesses! whipping their asses makes it worse. the answer is not in the kid and what you do to them the answer is in the parents and adults that spend time with them. you have to take lots of classes and learn systems that work with these kids, and MEDS are for some imperative just so they can function. Food is also an important part to there moods, yes a proper diet makes a difference, but the reality is that many even with everything in place will need MEDS. yes it is a last resort and there is alot of MEDS that are prescribed that are non-narcotic. You will need to go through several of them generally depending on diagnosis of the child. Generally when shit goes bad its because they STOPPED taking the MEDS that was keeping them at an even keel.

and so just in case the post you just responded to wasnt on target I posted down below a follow up to this post on goths page, and in conjunction to your post.

and also while im at it, im gonna say it again, its the parents that need to do some work, not the kids and not the doctors heres why. because normal people dont understand a kid that is acting up all the time, they just get pissed and take him to a doctor finally, when they are at their last stand and say give him something that will make this stop. the doctor just gives them something that makes it stop. but the truth is if you where a good parent you would try to understand WHY this happening and how you could change it and tell the doc to fuck off with his MEDS. these kids need to be treated in a different way, they work exceptionally well with praise. so you build a system that operates around praise and everything changes. when you first start out and the kid knows nothing but trouble you praise for the dumbest shit, but as they learn how to do their best the praising gets a little harder to get. so the game goes like this, theres 3 different colored chips, white, blue and red. white chips you give for just about anything and they can cash them in to do things like watch TV, play on the computer, call someone etc. the TV might cost say 6 chips for 1 hour. or they can cash in the white chips, say 30 of them for a blue chip. 30 blue chips gets something like a toy they want or a video game ETC, but blue chips are harder to come by, they require a full day with no problems. or they can cash in 10 blue chips for a red chip. red trip require 3 days no problems which in these kids world is almost impossible, but 10 red chips and they get to go somewhere or do something really fun. you get the drift of what im saying. basically stop being shitty parents and learn how to deal with your kids so they dont have to go on MEDS in the first place. learn how to be positive role models in their life and talk to the school and the teachers and any other places he goes and explain what works for your kid. you can beat them all day long and they will still space out and loose track, but you have to remember they are obsessive compulsive and if you give them something they really WANT they wont forget. this is just one example, there are many more tools a parent can learn if they apply themselves and stop blaming the kid. my case unfortunately is much more advanced then this, and although this works to some degree there certain parts of the illness that cant be fixed by this method. and MEDS may not fix it either.

I assume you're talking about Adderall (not sure about the spelling) in reference to your college days. A lot of students use it to cram for exams, and I've heard it's basically "Cocaine Light"---taste great but only half the calolries of real coke?? It was featured in Bigger Faster Stronger as a performance enhancer. Glad it wasn't sround when I was in college----I'm good for about 2 hours of study before I need a 4 hour break and a bottle of Jack.

It isnt neccesarily a disorder. Rather everyone is on a spectrum, some people are on the low end of the spectrum and can be classified as ADHD. This is why on any range of the spectrum, the meds will increase focus for someone. My opinion is that a child should not recieve an ADHD med untill the brain is done developing. If you give a child these meds while their brain is still growing, IMO it creates a crutch for the brain. I believe that while brain cells are still being created we should give the child a chance to naturally develop their brain to counterbalance the symptoms of ADHD. However I can say that for the people who are classified ADHD, that this medication can be a godsend. It can allow someone to participate in society at a level they may never had been able to.
I share in your opinion that ADHD meds can withdraw creativity, as it leaves little time for the brain to wander outside the box.
