deadlifts

ad

I was curious how many of the older guys here gave up on doing deadlifts. I'll occassionally do romanians for the hamstrings, but I very rarely do the traditional deadlifts unless I'm lifting with the younger guys. What's the aging guys take on them?

MMMMmmmmmmm deadlifts. I am 40 and still going strong on them. I love them. They are such an important exercise as long as they are done safely.

Yup, a guy feels so anabolic after deads the rush lasts a while too.

Yeah you do. I was pulling up 180kg on Monday for a 8 reps. Man did I feel good after that.

Do you have different variations of them? Like trap bar, behind back and between legs? You can get pretty creative and it all hits differently.

I know what your talkin bout wit da grip strength, I'll go up to 315 without straps. I don't wear a belt at all for deads or squats.

Deadlifts are such a good mass building exercise i love doing them

They are very beneficial indeed. Especially for the ectomorph tryin to put on size. I've had so many ectomorphs tell me how they can't put size on. First I ask what their carb intake is and second I ask if their doing compound exercises. Usually they flunk both.

Deadlifts shouldn't cause pain (just muscle soreness which is good, right?) I know a lot of older guys who deadlift and their backs are strong as hell. I bend over cars working all day and my low back used to kill me. now that I pull heavy every week I have strong back muscles and they take the load instead of my spine. back feels great. if you are not doing them then start. if you already are, put some weight on the bar!

Just coached a fellow lifter on them the other day. They felt great, its been a while since I've done them, but I worked up to 315 for a good ten reps. Now that my abs are much stronger, they don't bother my back near as much. My form was still spot on, head up, drive through the heels and hips hinged perfect. No points for for the negative portion so I drop fast and controlled. I looked like a f%#ing machine. Coulda went much heavier, just not worth the risk, I'm into bodybuilding even though powerlifting is alota fun.

Use a trap bar in order to do them in the least harmful way possible...

I'm 36, and I alternate Romanian deads one week and regular deads the next week. They r more taxing on my body than they used to be, and I don't look forward to them the way I used to, but I plan on competing in my first bodybuilding contest next year. I know that I will be competing against younger guys who r still deadlifting, so I refuse to give them up. They also help my strength in SQUATS and I believe they r beneficial in building a superior back from top to bottom. Bodybuilding is the fountain of youth, NEVER LET YOUR AGE SLOW U DOWN BROTHER!!!!!

Funny Topic. Im 33 and was deadlifting in the gym yesterday. Got up to 365 7-8 using wraps and next thing I know my hand goes numb and blood filled under the skin. I go higher in weight all the time but yesterday just didnt work. Is get older the issue?? Effin hope not. Doctor said I pretty much just strangled my hand :/

Btw I know 33 is young, but my body isnt healing like it use to

Would you consider 29 to be "aging" haha. Dead lifts are my main lift.. love em. What issues are you having mate? I get the odd lower back pain if I go stupid, but I learnt from them mistakes.

There's some exercises that my older workout partner just won't do. He has issues with his knee from football. The romanian lifts seem to hit the hamstring better than anything. As far as the traditional deadlift I don't feel is a necessity in a routine, but I would like to have that thought processee challenged to better evaluate it. I do squats regularily along with other leg exercises. I'm not a power lifter, I'm more into bodybuilding, so I'm not so sure deadlifts need to be incorporated in my regular routine. I do them along with power cleans on occasion, but not weekl.

Sounds like your hitting all the muscles anyway mate. I wouldnt bother with the deadlifts or any excercise for that matter if they cause pain..
