Powerlifting competitor dies during bench press
This is just plain awful, the video is pretty graphic so if you're squeamish don't watch it. I can't stop thinking about it. Poor guy, the spotter just doesn't appear to be paying attention.

Apparently from what I could gather he'd passed out earlier during warmup with 160kg and a similar thing had happened but was saved by spotters, with this lift he appears to simply drop the bar so may have again passed out momentarily, there was some discussion about open handed grip with no thumb but it looks ok to me and it appears to be a conventional grip.
He sits up afterwards and appears ok, then is rushed to hospital shortly afterwards and sadly dies.
Whatever happened its awful and really makes you think about the equipment you're using and who's watching out for you. I'm no powerlifting aficionado but don't they normally have a safety rack just below chest height in case this sort of thing happens? I guess its not so in all events?

Damn. That really sucks. I have seen that happen to two of my training partners at a meet. One dumped the bar with 480lbs but luckily one side spotter was quick so only about half the weight got him. He only ended up with a few bruised ribs. Another did it about halfway up with maybe 350lbs. Im just waiting for one of these guys doing 1000+ to do that. Luckily when there is that much weight on the bar they have about 5 spotters and they are ready at any second to grab that weight.
These spotters in that video were pretty much fucking sleeping and should have been on that bar. I dont care if it is 135lbs and some girl going for her max. A max effort is a max effort. Had i been a judge at that meet i would have pulled them from the platform and found someone who knew what the hell they were doing. This is a tragedy that could have been avoided.
the spotter in the red shirt was just standing there not even spotting, and they both look like they should of not been spotting size wise in the first place, pretty skinny guys,i know if that were me i would want guys on each end that could catch 200lbs each no problem
I can't believe they gave him water to drink after that, he'd done some major internal damage. They should have made him lie still but who knows if that would have even helped.
That sucks
I felt that. Vicarious experience.
Squish ;(
