+ 2 Is hitting one bodypart once per week really enough?

ad

Hi just wondering what peoples thoughts are on hitting one body part once per week?
Is it really enough?
Or do you find it more beneficial training body parts twice a week, each on different days?

Ive always heard "whatever you can recover from"..

I followed Arnold's book that recommended this some 10-12 yrs ago and saw tremendous results all natty in regards to both growth and strength gains. I don't do it now as it's boring and I really like a HIIT style training regime. I hate cardio for the sake of cardio and just weightlifting without variety and intensity is too monotonous. I've taken to participating and training with the Civil Air Patrol in my area and I'm very happy with it. Long to short? To each there own goals.

I think it varies for everyone. for me I don't feel like once a week is enough. I also think you'll be able to tell if you're doing too much, i.e. sore and tired, but I could be wrong. There's also a lot of variables, like how many sets per body part per workout vs how many sets per body part per week. also, something I heard once that always made sense to me - "there's no such thing as over training just under recovering."

Everyone is different and many factors come into play when discussing recovery time.
The standard in science would be 72 hrs of recovery per muscle group. ex: train chest on monday and friday.

I find adding more intensity and less training days works best for me. I do a 3 days on 2 days off approach

"You only live once, but if you live/do it right....once is enough"

It's all boils down to balance in a way, and finding that balance is key. You want to stimulate the muscle, not annihilate it. As per relative to AAS usage...more isn't always better and push too much, too often for too long and the body itself pushes back... HARD and you end up back in square one having done more negative damage than positive/good. Periodization works and very well, but one must fully adhere to the plan and follow it to the T. Its difficult to sometimes have to "hold back" aka deload especially when improvements are being made left and right.(Chuck Vogelpohl) Before you realize it, injury occurs as as a result of "not listening to our body" and by then it's too late and starting from scratch is never fun. "Balance" Good luck

It all depends on what you can recover from buddy - in terms of muscle soreness, CNS fatigue, energy levels etc. With both Bodybuilding and Powerlifting for example the more times you are able to train a muscle per week then the bigger and stronger it will become. That's where your Elite level guys take home the winning prize in both sports - because they can recover extremely quickly and therefore get more work in during a given timeframe, heal & recover it then hit it again because they have top level Genetics. Its also where different steroids and cycles come into play as on some you can increase the frequency more than on others. However its all a very delicate balancing act as there is a fine line between high frequency and overtraining. Once you are overtraining you are effectively destroying the muscle and making it weaker and smaller. Keep in mind a Week doesn't have to consist of a set 7 days, it can be effectively 9 days to you and you can train everything twice in that period.

Makes pefrect sense that bro thanking u very much press!!...i have been finding the pains after a heavy session (well heavy session to me lol) to go away after about 2 days thankfully...what i did have tho that was really quiet bad too espically when id do my arms (i think it called muscle fatigue)
Where my arms would be litterlly trembling like fuck for about 2 hours after training lol,...i presume that was happning because i hadn't trained in years and muscles was just not use to it anymore...its no where near as bad now tho thankfully...

A good training program is the key make a 12 16 week split training 1/4 4/8 8/12 12/16 put in variation one exercise with drop set one exercise focus on squeez/stretch one exercise focus on negatif and explosion one to failure and dont forget a proper warm up

One thing for sure, I can only do legs 1x every 5 days but I’ll do (touch up) days on various body parts just to activate that group. As far as legs go, I do try to hit the staining master at a slow pace to stimulate that muscle group but typically yes all my body parts are once a week with incorporated warm ups with other muscle groups for a few sets.

Jimmy..'s picture

Thanks for ur input bro....leg day is the one day i never really take that seriously i hit my legs nowhere near as hard as i do my upperbody
(STUPID ?..I NO.. I NEED TO SNAP OUTTA THAT MINDSET)

SimonM84's picture

Putting emphasis on legs has greatly altered my entire physique. I easily gained more LBM since I’ve done so. At least an extra 15lbs naturally. When I hit my winter cycle 2024. I’m gunning to hit all PRs on my leg lifts in hopes to get my body weight to 230lbs. I know I can’t do this unless the weight gain is more distributed in my lower body. Also, since I’ve been doing legs the way I have, it’s helped my cardio. It just fucking improves everything so just do them and do them heavy lol.

hogwild's picture

Same here, neglected legs until the past few years. Love leg days now and upper body has exploded I feel like because of making legs a priority.

Thats crazy bro i never thought leg days was so important...100% going to be hitting those legs alot more from here on ..thanks mate

Make sure you do groin and hip stretches along with your adductor abductor machines to improve flexibility, prevent injury and go deeper with your squat.

Makwa's picture

Best way to put an inch on your arms to put an inch on your legs.

hogwild's picture

BOOM! That pretty much sums it all up right there.

I’m all ears on this was. I just switched to twice a week two weeks ago, and see and feel a difference already. New diet probably has to do with it too.

Jimmy..'s picture

U training same body part twice a day jake or switching it up on different days?

JakeKO's picture

Just started doing my whole workout/every body part twice per week. I’ve been doing arms twice per week for the past two years and guess what? I got pretty decent arms, LOL. Two years later, I’ve finally realized I need to step things up

Jimmy..'s picture

Get a pic of those guns up brother
Keep us posted how ur finding 2xsessions daily too and hopefully ill be joining ya in a few months

JakeKO's picture

I’m about two months away from a pic post. I’m nothing to brag about right now, body fat is still too high to be proud, but hoping to be after this cut cycle. Diet is finally dialed in for once, training increased, and I’m hoping my gear dosage is on point. Hoping, because I can only pin glutes without PIP., so I can’t handle more than 2.5 mil per injection eod. All short esters, so I want to see how it goes for two weeks before increasing dosage and being forced to pick other injection sites. Also pinning 2iu of liquid HGH for the first eight weeks to help recovery.

FatBoy26's picture

I know Arnie used to sometimes hit chest twice per day with a beach visit in between. The life !
Once per week depending on number of sets is enough for me at my level but it’s all about recovery. At 41 I go hard but take it easy at the same time. Like someone else said in another post ‘ slow and steady ‘

hogwild's picture

Read one of makwa's post for bulking, and about hitting same body part 2x day. I tweaked it some, just don't have time for 2x a day sessions. Been hitting same muscle every 2 days back to back at gym, been doing this the past 2 weeks and it fuckn rocks. Was hitting different muscle group everyday, would get sore and pumped but not like hitting them back to back I'm going to stick with that for a while and rock it. look up his post for bulking.

Doing it now cheers brother

Makwa's picture

All depends on your experience.. Someone like me. Hell no it isn't enough. someone who walked into gym for first time. Yes. If you are not growing, then reassess diet. Still not growing then reassess training regime. I have some routines where I work one body part everyday of the week.

Jimmy..'s picture

Thanks for ur input too bro
I would definitely be no where near as expierenced as you guys here,, but just feel like i can do more daily routiens in the gym and also instead of just cardio on days off do some lifting on those days too

I recently started your workout routien (not the pro one tho lol) and i find it great im not doing as many sets as you have posted but not far off either but definitely feel like i could go back to the gym again in the evening
And i will be doing now 100%

ONESICK's picture

I hit everything at least twice a week. Sometimes 3X depending on what I want to do goal wise.
I run a variation of push, pull and legs split. I throw in an extra body part here and there.
I work some muscle groups harder than others as it takes a bit more to stimulate. Say my back gets worked harder than arms do.
There's a plethora of information on here. someone will chime in.

FatBoy26's picture

3X shit ! I couldn’t handle that. Getting old sucks lol ….

ONESICK's picture

I've gone harder lol. That's just my regular routine. If I were to go as hard as I did when then it was 7x a week and 4/5 of those days running 2x a day. Of course I had those "supplements" to speed my recovery. My wife thought I was crazy lol That lasted about 9 weeks.

FatBoy26's picture

Do you ever get concerned about joint health ? I Spend a good 20 minutes warming up these days. Especially pulling on those shoulder joints and stretching. Good form and less weight is my main focus these days….

ONESICK's picture

When I was younger I took a lot more risks. Coming from a fighting background I was used to pushing myself to my limits. Now that I'm out of the fight game I take it easier. I usually stretch before, during and after work outs. I take collagen peptides as well to help aid with joints, tendons and ligaments. I don't go heavy heavy much anymore. I'm with you on good form and lighter weight.

FatBoy26's picture

Yup. I certainly don’t do 6-8 reps now. Atm I do strict 13-15. Not ideal and I will drop it down to 8-12 at some point.
Can I ask further are the collagen peptides in tablet form ? They come up. Ty

ONESICK's picture

It's generally in powder form.

FatBoy26's picture

Thank you. I see them on Amazon.

Jimmy..'s picture

3 sessions id be hanging on in there like a wet mop lol

ONESICK's picture

I like to push myself sometimes. As I get older I take it more easy.

Jimmy..'s picture

Big respect to u and makwa for being able to manage those type of sessions (SOLID AS FUCK YOU GUYS ARE) maybe at some stage in the future i might try manage 3 sessions but at the min its wishfull thinking

ONESICK's picture

We're the same age no real need to go hard hard unless you absolutely want to see what you're capable of.

Jimmy..'s picture

Dont really what to see what im capable off bro although it would be quiet cool to no lol
To be honest mate im more after what i like to call my goal towards
"My 12month transformation" although my expectations might be a little unrealistic im going to try my best anyway to get there with the help of you guys, the gym, eating clean as fuck, and some gear to hopefully speed up process a little. It might just happen
But Im only starting to get back into this lifestyle after years of abusing myself (partying lifestyle for years)
...So im also dreading to look at these full blood works test results when i get them done lol....

ONESICK's picture

How I always tell people. If you want to be realistic set a high expectation and do half of that. Even if you hit half of that it's still better than what most do. That's the problem with lifting and the mindset people get. They expect too much in a short amount of time. It could take several years to hit your goal. It just comes down to how disciplined you are. It's something you really have to change your life around. You have to set a routine, change your diet, hell might even have to tell friends to fuck off lol. It's just the name of the game.

FatBoy26's picture

Brutal … if it works then kudos to the man that can take that beating.

Jimmy..'s picture

Thanks for ur input bro as i was hoping to start training arms, chest, shoulders ect twice a week starting in about 2-3 weeks when i get more strenght going.
But was unsure if it would do more harm than good in the long run

Makwa's picture

Here is some food for thought. Just don't jump ahead to quickly.

https://www.eroids.com/forums/training-nutrition-diet/workout-exercise/a...

Jimmy..'s picture

Cheers buddy...going to have a read of that now

ONESICK's picture

Definitely work your way up. Especially if you're just starting out. Think of it as a marathon. You go too hard too soon you'll burn yourself out. That's when most people give up. You want to be recovered on a body part within a few days. If you're still too sore by 4/5 days then you worked that body part too hard.
