Best budget home gym set up

ad

Hey,

So basically I'm in a situation where I can't get to the gym for a few months, and I already have a pull-up bar and a bench, and I'd love to get myself some dumbbells too. I've searched all over the internet, and so far no luck, unless you want to pay for them around $200, which I really don't.
Anybody knows where I can get something to work with, so that it wouldn't be so pricey? All those stores Amazon, eBay, even fitness ones, have stuff only for women. I also don't need bars, just the dumbbells, and something with 40-50kg on each dumbbell should do. I thought maybe someone is working out at home and knows a good place where to buy this stuff. I don't care if it's used, poorly looking, or even if it's just sandbags or a stick, as long as it does the job.

Sand bags & sand variants. All you need. Do it up like Spartacus.

Have you tried something like Facebook Marketplace or other second hand websites. A lot of people buy these things and never use them and sell them really cheap just to get rid of it

40-50kg! Those are for the more serious lifters and I doubt any of them are gonna get rid of them. I like Grow More's reply below. U might need to think outside the box. Something more homemade. I'd pour some concrete into pots with a thick stud sticking out. Then use a coupling fitting tto screw the two parts together making a heavy dumbbell. Got to go a little primal on this one.

New dumbbells from the store have literal zero benefits over used ones. I've had a mini-version of a home gym in the basement of my old house and every single piece of equipment (bench, dumbbells, punching bag, a whole set of kettlebells, and a bar in the backyard) costed me like 50$. It was 6 years ago.

I'd approach it this way if I needed one now: things you can get for free — things you can get cheap — and things you absolutely have to pay for.

To get the free ones, ask your friends, relatives, and everyone you can ask about it. People tend to think better of themselves and buy all sorts of equipment impulsively, to never use it later. I bet at least someone from your closest circle wanted to turn quarantine into "self-improvement time" and now they have a perfect set of dumbbells covered in dust.

To get cheap ones — Facebook marketplace. It's full of barely used equipment, at least in my area. More expensive than before, but still less than from the store.

For all things you can't find for free or cheap — well, the only way to go is buying it. Look for promos and sales, if you Google things right — you can find a bunch of good deals.

The only problem is that most beginner sets are way lighter than you need, but I guess you still can find some.

Oh one more thing I'd do is legwork with local gym owners. No big chain will sell you anything, but some privately owned may have old sets lying around because the staff is too busy or lazy to list it for sale.

I travel for work as cell tower tech, so I live in a hotel 20+ days out of the month. I had been looking for something that i could take with me and use in a hotel or even at home if i didnt feel like going to the gym. I said fuck it and bought this thing called the MaxPro Fitness. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it looks awesome. It's expensive but you can do payment plans with zero interest. I'd check it out.

Are you able to get a membership to a couple of the well known gym franchises in the US and then just use which ever you are nearest to at the time?

Yah I do that as well. I was in Texas for a month back in August and got a membership at Fitness Connection, and as a last resort i have a planet fitness membership as those thing are everywhere. Then I also have a membership at my local gym in the town I live in. Costs me about $60 a month between the three of them. I don't work such crazy hours during the winter because of the limited day light, but in the summer I easily put in 13+hours with an 11 days on / 3 days off. So in the winter I can usually get to an actual gym more so then the summer. But I still like the idea of being able to get pretty damn good workout in the hotel room or in my house if I'm not feeling very social haha.

Bro, I myself definitely don’t have the discipline for this, but I have a friend who religiously uses the P90X system, and he is completely shredded . He’s not huge in size, but also never uses any bulking gear, so who knows what he would look like if he did. Just a suggestion from someone who tried it, but I just wasn’t tough enough to keep it going, LOL. I lasted about five days and pussed out.

So which area has the best selection of Gym Bunnies then? Lol

Hahahaha. It's hit or miss bro depending on what part of the state im in. I will say North Dallas had some of probably the best bunnies for sure haha. Honestly though my hometown gym is where its at. its about 30 miles away from a major Army installation and where i live its mostly officers and/or special ops guys. it's like shooting fish in a barrel with the amount of fine ass women that are constantly there. I'm a married man so I tell myself I can look at the menu all I want, I just can't order anything haha.

I went to a Rangers game in Arlington with an old friend that lives in Ft.Worth back in August. They have this place next to the stadium that has like 6 different restaurants and bars inside of it. It was a friday night, and let me tell you...it was poppin with some fine ass women in cowboy boots lol.

Right on about the bunnies, gotta have plenty around for the cowboys lol. And very familiar with Ft. Hood. They say it's second to Bragg, but I've been to both and Hood for sure holds more warriors so at the end who is larger lol

11chuck88's picture

I got lucky and never had to go to hood. Spent my whole career at Bragg. I love Texas though. Trying to convince the wife to move to the ft worth/Springtown area but she's not trying to leave NC.

Fayetvillle is nice and surrounding towns like Pinehurst is beautiful. Pro golf annually and Southern Pines is a nice place to settle and raise kids. Much prefer NC weather than Tx to be honest but to each his own and not knocking TX whatsoever.

I wasn't to high on Fayetteville. It's gotten so much worse now as well. Homicides damn near everyday. Southern Pines is where its at!

Fayetteville has its bad side of town like the Murchison area and so on, but its like that every town though. Good sides/bad sides. Robeson Co has beautiful country setting sides though and full of Locklear's and Oxidines. Facts with S.Pines, loved it there.

Ugh, those ankle bracelets suck! Walmart has great dumbbells for a very good price. Also, a lot of people selling stuff they bought during COVID on Facebook marketplace

Diesel77's picture

Gym equipment prices as a whole has drastically gone up and stayed high ever since facilities and franchised gyms closed due to covid. The power rack with a pulldown attachment and adjustable bench I got brand new 7 years ago was a packaged deal of $600 but now it's $900. Weights itself was separate. ($500 for Olympic 600lb plate set)Your best bet would be to shop around your local area through various online sources/social media and find a person moving but don't want to take the gym/weights with them. Possibly a flea market if one in your town or shop garage sales, but the TIME itself it takes to achieve that...might as well spend $ on a new gym equipment at your local sporting goods store. Good luck bro

With post lockdown purchases being sold and it being this time of year Facebook market place is full of deals. If you don’t have an account do what I do and open one up purely to use market place, it pisses all over eBay.

Alternatively you can build a set up for pennies using scaff poles, pulleys, climbing rope and 25L liquid containers. I built one of these set ups while my gear was on back order during lock down and although it was a little unsophisticated, it did the job. Dips, pull ups, cables, squat, bench/shoulder press, deadlift etc all possible.
