ummm with all this discussion going on about the future of America, i would like to recommend a book i just read. "The Post-American World" by Fareed Zakaria. the title itself says what direction the US is headed in... dont think that the country is broken beyond repair though people.
Anonoh my god your going to recommend a Fareed Zakaria book in this thread ?
Hes always got a great take on things IMO
yes, there is a lot of truth to his book.
We are all fucked! The Super rich elite who now not only basicaly control the us but all of the world. wake up ppl. While u guys are argueing bush this, obama that, romneys gonna do this , they are stocking up on HOLLOW point ammo by the millions and plastic coffins by the 500,000s. There are detainment camps being built all around the country. Who do you think all this is for? The ppl who truly run this country( Which u wont ever ever see in a politaical election lol) KNOW that shit is about to hit the fan and ppl are gonna take to the streets. It will literaly be a fight to see how the the world will turn out. How many of you have heard of the nwo? eveydsay i am believeing this shit more and more. US is setting up to rule the world and to become a world govt. this is not good. When the rich elite control all the food and all the fuel and eventually all the weapons we are fucked.... and while they are doing this the mindless ignorant americans are arguing politics and religion like any of it matters anymore lol. comical to say the least. @ cleyon and noviceaas...... let me ask u guys....If the president makes on average 1 speach a day and spends hal\f his time campaigning and the other half at events, shootings etc, what in the fuck makes u guys think that he has any time to properly run the country. the guy couldnt even run a mom and pop store with all his duties. Its beyond ignorant for anyone to think that the president has jack diddly squat with how the country is ran and opperated.
AnonWell I am hoping Obama /Biden win this election, not because Obama has been a great president. To the contrary, I actually find him to be George W Bush all over again, but thats the problem with Romney too.
Obama has proven himself to be a whore to big business, to continue favoring the 1% with extended tax cuts and capital gains tax cuts that the country can not afford. He has not made any move to punish big business for outsourcing and his attempt to tax overseas accounts was weak at best. His Obama care is a misserable failure unless you are a CEO to a health insurance company, then you are loving it. Wall street rebounded just as strong as ever, corporate proffits are pouring in, but no moves to direct that wealth towards the middle class.
The only desperate hope I have is that if Obama gets a second term he wont be chicken shit and actually do what needs to be done to help the majority. Romney/Ryan will only continue to try and break the backs of the already overburdened middle class.
Supernova283You punish big business and tax the hell out of the rich and you watch them leave.
My family is considering leaving and my parents only have 3 mil. You can't tax your way out of this. There isn't enough money in the world. They need to set up a budget and stop spending so damn much.
AnonSo what part of the budget do you suggest they trim the most from ? I happen to agree that spending could and should be cut, but from what I see I imagine the areas I feel would not be that of others. I will say though that I believe I read our military budget is greater than the next ten countries combined. Anyone worried about defending this country should wake up and see it needs protecting in the economy before it worries about any military action.
The 1st part I would cut out is everything except for the military and school. If the government is needed by any American for any other reason than protection then they are part of the problem. The states should control the rest. Also there needs to be crazy high tax on imports. So high its not worth buying. I think there should be a flat tax for everyone. Even food.
CleyonI'd say military and infrastructure is all the feds should be in charge of. Schools should be left to the states. I agree with the below comment, that food (necessities) should be tax exempt. However sweets, sodas, and other non-essentials should be taxed. I would provide the caviat that they should be taxed at the same rate as everything else. There should be NO "sin" taxes at the federal level, if the states want to make those so be it.
AnonAgreed on that, except for the food part. I think basic healthy foods should be exempt, but candy, chips, and soda ,yeah tax the hell out of that stuff.
tread-mThis president is the first in history but there is no budget. They never passed on by design and it is required by law every year. No budget signed since Obama took office...none. so how do you cut that which was never created?
CleyonVery good point. It reminds me of a line from a movie. "I don't set any goals, that way I never fail!"
Rights going down the tube every day.Did u guys know they are passing provisions and laws to cut off supplies and food to "regions" in the U.S.???? Dont like what the gov is doing... fine they will starve u out. Scary shit guys. we are like lambs to the slaughter... maybe not in this decade but def in this century id say..... we are at a tipping point imo.
CleyonShrap, I hear a lot of this stuff, and really most of it seems pretty nutty to me. Part of that comes from being in a position that helps me understand how hard that would be to do with out distributed infrastructure. There really isn't a way to do it without rolling out millions of troops (many more than we currently have).
I agree that the way the country is going is scary as hell, read Atlas Shrugged, and if you don't see the simularities, then you aren't paying attention.
Supernova283I suggest they trim from everywhere. Obviously these stupid studies that get million dollar grants for things like shrimp on tiny treadmills are ridiculous and should be cut entirely.
I think that military budget should be cut, but not a tremendous amount as most Democrats believe.
AnonAll the talk of leaving, yeah it just wont happen though. Facts are facts if you want to cure the debt then you have to do two things, cut spending and take in more money. Tax rates are now lower than they have ever been and theyve been that way for 10 years. If low tax rates helped then explain why it hasnt now. Tax rates on corporations are high, but because of loopholes collection is absurdly low.
There were plenty of people making plenty of money in the 90's and taxes were only a few percent higher.
Supernova283Hahaha it just won't happen? Really? Why did Eduardo Saverin (facebook CEO and cofounder) just recently renounced his citizenship then?
If you lower tax rates people won't be as willing to risk felony charges to save money by finding a way around taxes.
You're just wrong.
CleyonMore than that, the wealthy (and indeed even the middle class like myself) have most of their savings invested in the market. If you make it too punitive, they (I) will take my money out of the market and put it into hard assetts.
Take that to extremes, and that's where there is a run on the banks. When banks don't have money, they can't lend money. It's a downward cycle.
Supernova283I'm actually thinking if it looks like Obama is going to be reelected I'm going to sell off all my investments and put it under my bed as cash and precious metals.
Obama is bad for the stock market.
AnonDo not you actually hear what you are saying ? "Obama is bad for the stock market"
What was the DOW in 2009 ? And what is it now ?
Supernova283I'm sorry how exactly does that help your argument? Look at the DOW between 2004-2008 then look at the stock market in 2009. Huge crash.
Yeah the market has come back a bit, but that's because we got the damn Democrats out of having full control.
AnonHow does that help my argument you ask ? Well first of all you made the statement that you may pull your money because Obama is bad for the market. So again I'll ask what has happened to the DOW since Obamas gotten in ?
So you think Boner has made the Dow hit 12k ?
I didnt really come here to discuss politics, next thing you know some whack job will deny the existence of climate change . Yeah now I know Im wasting my time. Have a good time with Cleyon, looks like you two can beat each others drums and drink all the kool aid you want.
Supernova283A little after Obama took office the market crashed and burned. From 2004-2008 it was recovering from a crash in 2000 which happened because the Democrats thought it was okay to give everyone the opportunity to buy a house.
Obama is bad for smaller businesses which is what our economy thrives on. That and production of crops.
Obama is bad for the stock market.
Ok, you can call me the whack job and while I am at it, here is a simple history 101 lesson for you, we could go back further and still defeat your "Obama rules!!" arguments, but to keep it simple for you (which is what I have found best to do, less mess when the head tries to explode)
2005 Katrina nails the gulf, exposing a major problem with our infrastructure to deliver petro products (do I need to mention which group likes to block building pipelines, wells, etc??), gas spikes... on the bright side, if you have any kind of trade skills you can get a job for excellent $$$ in almost every town in the southeast (La, Ms, Tx, etc) as the big bad oil companies, in addition to making a bunch of money are INVESTING a ton of cash into development, pipelines, distribution, etc.
2006 Dow hits a high of 11727 yet Dems start screaming how bad everything is, elect us... dems take control of house and senate and start planning for 2008
2007 Dems in control of house and senate. Getting ready for 2008, they continue on telling everyone how bad it is, riding the end of the previous couple years build out boom on oil, dow hits all time high of 14164, average consumer starts getting nervous and starts cutting back on spending.
2008 Dow in steady state of decline as consumers start curtailing spending more and more, with less sales companies start laying off left and right, viscous circle starts occurring with less money being circulated in economy, less sales=more layoffs, dems still pounding the "elect us because we convinced you its bad" drum, "uh"bama elected, dems get super majority in senate and house.
2009 Dems start running around telling everyone its all better now, they are in charge. Cattle ignore them and continue to stampede, dow hits low of 6500 (crash)
2010-2011 Dems accomplish little other than shoving a healthcare bill nobody wants and nobody (even themselves) can understand down the country's throat, with the assistance of grass roots groups advocating less govt and less spending, Republicans take back the house. Dems keep the senate, still haven't passed a budget as required.
2012 Dems and "uh"bama running scared, "hope and change" has now become "slander and smear" in a desperate attempt to stay in control, including Reid accusing Romney of not paying taxes, "uh"bama telling women that Republicans want to shove them back to the 1950s and Biden looking at a group of blacks and saying "they'll put you all back in chains"
As for the global warming, uh excuse me, "climate change", consider this... back in the 70s it was another ice age we were facing according to the "experts"... after running around screaming "global warming" here the past few years, they changed to "climate change" to cover their asses when we had record cold snaps, oh, and lastly, we have been tracking weather what.. 100 years or so? First, the accuracy of the recorded data from 1900 is nowhere near the accuracy of data today, and secondly, how many MILLIONS of years has the earth been around? The amount of data collected is not even .0001% of how long the earth has been around. To make blanket statements concerning the earth, climate, etc based on the data available is the same as a Doctor poking his head in the door, blinking his eyes one time and poking you once with his finger and then telling you how old you will live to be, how you will die, and how long your CHILDREN live and when THEY will die... would YOU trust that doctor? I'm all for cleaning the enviroment up, hard to hunt and fish in polluted areas, but dont piss on my foot and try and tell me its raining either.
Oh, and since you will now need some, the kool-aid (or should I say, "uh"bamas "organic and all natural, honey pale ale made with honey collected from michelles beehives and all without harming a single bee) is right over there ~~~~~~~~~~~~>
Oh, and when your head is done exploding, be sure to grab the mop and clean up, as Tread hates it when brain matter is left all over the floor!! ;)
Supernova283This^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Although I disagree with the disregarding climate change. While I don't believe in the whole humans are causing climate change there IS more CO2 in the atmosphere than before. We know the oxygen levels were much higher back when there were ice ages and such and CO2 levels are higher than they have ever been. If the Earth does go through a period of cooling CO2 increases in solubility as the temperature gets colder which will cause CO2 to dissolve into the water. This will lower the pH of the water a considerable amount and if it gets cold enough could very well kill all but the most resilient life in the ocean/sea/whatever.
This would be catastrophic to the ecosystem. We need to do something about the CO2 levels or else if we ever do get caught in another ice age you can say goodbye to practically all life on Earth.
CleyonSorry if factual arguments about the state of things bother you.
CleyonThe top 20% of earners pay over 60% of the taxes. How idiots like this function in society is amazing to me. Well said Nova.
AnonSo basicly your just an asshole eh ? Your answer is to call me an idiot and question my function ? Well go f#&k your self. I function just fine and support my family and my self. Do you ?
Someone disagrees with you or makes a statement you and your rhetoric dont agree with and thats your initial rosponce ? If you can prove your self to be more than someone who resorts to that tactic without reason then be my guest, otherwise we're done.
CleyonDid I call you an "asshole"? No, you are an uninformed man spewing class-warfare rhetoric that you probably learned from some socialist professor or teacher. You don't understand how economics work, but feel you are being cheated because people have told you that is the case.
So let’s break this down a point at a time, and see if we can’t figure out where we differ.
“Well I am hoping Obama /Biden win this election, not because Obama has been a great president. Wall street rebounded just as strong as ever, corporate proffits are pouring in, but no moves to direct that wealth towards the middle class.”
So he’s been a failure of a President, but you still want him to win because he’s going to do better when his political ambitions to be re-elected have been satiated? There is really no such thing as the “1%” it’s just a class warfare argument, the top earners in the this country agree with just as many things as the rest of the country i.e. nothing. For every Koch brother there is a George Soros, and for every Sheldon Adelson there is a Warren Buffett.
Why should businesses be punished for outsourcing jobs? If we as a country make it too expensive for a business to operate here, what are they supposed to do? There are certain businesses that are geographically tied, but for those that are not, why would they continue to do business in a climate that is hostile to them?
”The only desperate hope I have is that if Obama gets a second term he wont be chicken shit and actually do what needs to be done to help the majority. Romney/Ryan will only continue to try and break the backs of the already overburdened middle class.”
The middle class is “overburdened”? By what pray tell? Paying for the social welfare of people in lower income brackets? Did you know that If are married and have a child, you can collect food stamps as long as you make less than $65,000/yr? Why does anyone making $65k need foodstamps!? There are a myriad of social programs like this that cost billions of dollars per year. That is what is hampering the economy, not the “1%”
“So what part of the budget do you suggest they trim the most from ? I happen to agree that spending could and should be cut, but from what I see I imagine the areas I feel would not be that of others. I will say though that I believe I read our military budget is greater than the next ten countries combined. Anyone worried about defending this country should wake up and see it needs protecting in the economy before it worries about any military action.”
Yes, good idea, let’s start our cuts from one of the only Federal programs that the Constitution explicitly tells the government it’s responsible for. In fiscal year 2010, total military expenditures accounted for 20% of the Federal budget. Considering that it is a Constitutional obligation that our Federal government proved for the national defense, that percentage doesn’t bother me... the total amount spent does.
If we want to protect the economy, we can easily do that by pulling government back.
Go to a sensible tax system that doesn’t have all the minutia. Flat Tax, or Fair Tax. I’m fine with either one. Stop the overt regulation of every economic sector in our economy. Let businesses do what they do, and only use government to mitigate disputes between companies and private citizens. Pull the federal government back to where it is provided for national defense, and infrastructure improvements.
Government expenditures accounted for 24% of GDP last year. That means that 24% of all the money spent was spent by the government. That is not sustainable. Europe is finding that out, we should look at the mess they have made and go the exact opposite way.
AnonThe problem is the corporations and big business are already "doing what they do". As I said earlier corporate profits are very high right now
You expect big business to keep my well water clean ? To pay for that clean up of toxic chemicals ? You want less regulation ? No thanks, not for me.
It is a FACT that federal taxes are at an all time low, if that is what is needed then why isnt it working ? A simple 3-4 percent increase, and a more historicly reasonable capital gains tax is needed to help balance that budget you are so worried about, not some asshole cheating the food stamp system. So as far as spewing class warfare shit, you are the one doing that, not me. Stop crying all this class warfare shit, its just history and economics.
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkCleyonObviously you aren't in the corporate world, or there is no way you could say that. How long does it take to start an oil well? How much of that wait time it spent waiting for government permits. What about building a grocery store, power plant, or manufacturing facility?
You think regulation keeps your well water clean? Government is more worried about extorting money from companies than protecting your water. I work in the energy sector, the goal of the EPA isn't public safety.
When you single out "federal taxes" my answer is "So?" There is a lot more to this than the Federal tax rate. You need to really start getting your information from other sources than the huffington post, and Daily kos.
AnonYou are talking about two very different things, regulation, and inefficiency.
Regulation needs to be in place, because if you think GE will do "the right thing" by you then Ive got a nice dry oil well to sell you.
As far as how long to start an oil well ? Well lets relate that to how much income it yields, how much in federal subsidies it gets, and how much damage it could do.
You are complaining about Obama, that is why I refer to Federal Tax rates.
CleyonOk, I see where you're confused. Like most of the media, you've lumped regulation and oversight into the same container. On protects, the other extorts. As to federal subsidies to drill an oil well, sorry I'm laughing too hard.
Supernova283Yeah. I mean I'm not a huge fan of Romney either, but this no budget thing has got to end. Obama has spent almost twice what Bush spent and he was considered a crazy spender.
AnonEvery major economist would agree that spending has kept this economy from complete disaster. The current rate of spending may not be sustainable, but osterity measures do not work.
CleyonNo, that's not true. The head of the Harvard School of Economics has said that government spending delayed the economies recovery. So did have several Nobel laureates. Austerity measures DO work. You can not keep spending more than you take in (you should know that from your own household budget), and even the government can't decide how much it is going to take in.
CleyonAnd the DEMOCRATIC controlled Senate hasn't proposed much less passed a budget in over four years! Yes, the Dems controlled Congress for the last two years of Bush's tenure. Look at the spending spree, and see when it started. It was 2006. Yeah, Bush was horrible on ecconomic policy, but we've more than doubled down on that policy.
I love how people blame the Republicans in Congress for obstructing Obama's agenda, when he had a Fillibuster proof Democratic majority in both houses of congress for his first two years.
CleyonI'll take Romney/Ryan over the current administration.
zewiSame.
Dont like em'!!
6'2 and 163 lbs. thats weak sauce
not exactly. in my tip top shape, im 6ft1 and about 159, and cut. ill bench 235. is that weak to you? how about 490lb shrugs. weak too? nah. for some reason i have a crazy amount of strength, but then again, very few are the exception.
if you are happy with your results then good for you.
gotta give him credit for staying in shape. don't agree with his politics though.
almost wants us (the people) to feel like "yeah, im a bro too). no, hes a fool and so is mit romney. give us a prez thats built like a brick house and see how fast the insignificant country members of the un scatter off because they're afraid that it wont be the army they should be scared of. it will be him, because if there's something they wont agree with him on, he'll just snap their neck with ease lol. i think im onto something.
Chuck Norris?
hell yeah.
