Anybody work a Union job?
I got an offer and it’s a Union job. A big Union. Is it better to work for a Union? I hear good and bad things. The money is no different than working a non union job so I don’t see any reason so far that makes it better. I got fired from my last job because I got arrested. I was innocent and charges dismissed but got fired anyway. Would a union have protected my job?
What are the pros and cons?

Yeah unions suck. Insurance is a mess. They say it’s free but it’s not. Then they forced me to put my kids on even though their mother is a school teacher and has amazing insurance and better insurance and cheaper. Plus pay is that same int I have to pay union dues. But that makes me end up with even less money. They basically do nothing. I can’t even get my glasses paid for in insurance. Teamsters suck bad.

ScarecrowI work for a union. Did the same job in a right-to-work state before being hired in another state with a union. It was a 13K increase to go to the union shop 16 years ago. I now make 6 figures while the right to work state is about 40K behind me. Prior to 5 months ago they were actually about 60K behind me.
I've worked in many industrial plants that had organized labor (unions) and have never, and will never be a part of one. My biggest issue was watching union craft working non-union jobs because " We have to pay our bills ", but if course it's not allowed the other way around. I got into many fights regarding those shenanigans including inside a distillation tower at a refinery. My career choice is considered a "specialty" field so it's not applicable and I've worked on union projects as a TA or in a consulting manner only. Personally, I could care less one way or the other, but the BA's are like politicians and only care about the money.
That’s the problem I have. I work in maintenance as a mechanic. Which in NY your an electrician and a mechanic if you work in maintenance. When the machines break you fix them.

I’ll make as much as I do in the union as I would in a non union shop. It’s a skilled trade. I don’t see the pros yet. I did start already and they like my skills. Plus I get along with the old timers
Sometimes peace in a workplace is worth it's weight in gold. I'm an instrument tech that got my Associates and now I am an instrument engineer. I never saw the pros in the 28 years I've been in oil/gas/chemical. I worked construction, maintenance, automation, and now an instrument engineer embedded in a Reliability department.
Yup automation is my thing. I love it because you have to think on how to get things running. And time flys when your thinking
My only regret is not getting into the field I'm in sooner. I waited 5 years to go to college to figure out what I really wanted to do.
Largely depends on the union. These questions honestly should be directed to a rep of the union. Im in a sheetmetal union and its pretty good. Fast growing 401k. Paid insurance. 2 wks vaca and 3 paid sick days... But there are horror stories too. Id say if youve already been fired and need a job... What the worse that can happen? The union isnt going to come beat you up if you decide its not for you.
Unions can be both bad and good. Off the top is dues. Mine were 100/mo. Thats 1200 a year which is a sizeable raise so i dropped the union. As a union rep i helped keep workers guarded from shitty bosses but more than not it was shitty workers trying to save their ass.
20yr pension is key and typically a big bonus. Some safeguards. A job is a job. Do it! Its easier to find work when working. You might like the perks too. Better med/dental/optical. Pension. Stability.

At least where I'm from in the midwest, seems the union guys make more on total package than the non union guys. Plumbing/pipe fitting. Hourly rate on the check is comparable union or not, but the benefits that are also added on top seems to be more. Local pension, national pension, health insurance, etc. Seems all unions play the political game to help get work, no denying that. My hall will def voice how they feel we should vote, as tho the only issue that would matter to us is work/the union.
I work for one of the biggest unions and all I noticed is them taking my money for union dues lol.

KonstantViktoryThat sucks man. There are a lot of differences between unionized and non unionized workplaces. This varies from state to state. As far as your question goes, that would be a determination made by HR and the people that are in control of firing. Strictly individual. So it's hard to judge there. With that being said, unionized jobs are typically more protected, as you'd expect. You usually have to pay union fees to become a unionized worker. As an educated guess, if you were an actual unionized worker, your job would be more protected. The issue with unions ultimately ends up being a matter of continued allotment. Again, site specific. You said you were arrested. That sucks. So controversial, the law, and it's implementations. Hard for me to provide a detailed opinion or feedback with limited information.

For arrests it depends. If you’re a laborer they will probably keep you through many arrests, I know guys. But if you a crane operator, operating engineer; it’s probably one and done depending on charges. Not 100% though.
Benefits are you have collective bargaining, massive support from the hall as well as “political” pull. This means wage increases, supplemental wages and insurance, better safety, immediate unemployment, no job searching. Disadvantages would be apprenticeships, union dues, political obligations, going along to get along, potential blacklist even though it’s illegal.
I was in multiple unions through life up north, made incredible money. Moved to Florida and they fuck their employees over so hard here I might move back if I can’t make this career change. I enjoyed my time in the union, it was not easy by any stretch of the imagination. I worked my dick off for that money and those opportunities.
Florida is the best state to have a private contractors business , you can pay the illegals next to nothing for the same work we do up in New York.
My grandfather was local 46, hard ass working Irish guys who had to get the steel tied off for the teamsters to pour the concrete know 580 is another balling ass union in nyc,
As soon as you get too CSEA the problems start, everything you stated being illegal happens every single fucking day, it’s deeper than unions is mob ties and here there’s no petty crime so I can definitely say I’m a whistleblower, they put so much pressure on you for speaking truth yet they can’t just up and fire me .

It’s funny because they put on the front like they don’t have illegal practices happening, but I’ve seen it all over. I’ve been pressured to vote a certain way internally and in a national capacity a few different times despite it being against my best interests. I’ve seen dudes blacklisted and I’ve seen dudes get special treatment. Preferential hiring and failing tests. There is big politics up top with some of those bids. The higher you go, the worse it gets.
I knew a couple dudes that were masons in NyC. Badass motherfuckers on sky scrapers.
I was thinking about starting a business in Florida and taking advantage of that cheaper labor. That’s the only way, being a grunt down here isn’t worth it. Even lower management doesn’t pay great either. Tough decisions.

They have a small low income housing areas located right behind the police station , with cameras on each side of the building like a cellblock smh, the cameras should be watching the pockets of the higher ups
