teaching a dog to swim
ad
I've got a 9 month old blue pittbull that went to the lake for the first time today. When in the deeper water she panicked and sank like a rock so I had to pull her back up. She kicks her legs and everything but just sinks. She will go about shoulder deep on her own but thats it. Other than deep water she lover running in the water and biting at wakes. I'm kinda thinking I migh have to get her one of those dog life jackets until she gets the hang of it lol
Anyone ever had to get their dog used to swimming? I'm just trying to get an idea on how to teach her swim in deeper water.

Anonshe might not ever learn if she got too scared.. get her a life jacket and if she learns to swim well great.. and if she does not well, you got her a floatie..
I'm going the route of getting her a dog life jacket so I can get her used to it and hopefully build up her confidence.
I rescue pitbulls. My pittys learned by watching good swimmers like our friends heeler. Pitties have no fat or fur to help em float. Lakes are easiest becaise they can go in without instantly sinking until they got strong enough to swim with no worries. When my boy starts to get tired his ass sinks. So i let him rest a while. They Love it!
I had a Great Dane that could not swim well even with practice. She was very lean and her rear end would sink even though her legs were kicking.
sgtstedankoI've got two dogs@home. 100 pound black lab, & a 75 pound akita. The lab Loves to swim w/me; he pretty much jumped in & swam right away (i think It's in their genes, or something). The Akita however does not swim well... Buy the dog floaties, brother : )
shoxingbiceps17Labs love to swim and are built for it, you can tell by their strong tails...i have 2 at the house and when they get excited and that tail hits you, it kinda hurts lol no joke
CleyonI've got a black lab, and he's already swimming laps around my lab/aussie mix. He's half her size too (for now). Labs also have webbed feet, they are born to bird dog.
Keep her in the shallow water. Then slowly walk out into deeper water with her following you. Put your hands under her to keep her afloat. But stay far away enough to not get scratched up. She will learn really fast. Yes, I would get the doggie vest also. The last thing you want is for your confidence in her being better than her ability to swim. A Pit, being short and stocky may tire out faster. The vast will help build her confidence also and thats the last thing you want with a Pitbull.
