+ 3 Stop using lifting straps!!!
ad
Ok folks .. for all of you that's using lifting straps to aid in your lifts your only hurting yourself . By using these your only making your grip strength weaker it's a fact . Your not doing yourself any favors by using them, put them away if your not strong enough to lift the weight with your bare hands then lower the weight !!

No homo. Lol
Ohhhhh snap!!!
Ok D Junkie better watch out I got traps big enough to catch a bear just your size hahaha!
LMAO!
And you're just having a good time aren't you hahaha!
I use straps for all the same reasons that were mentioned below. I must not be cool and a homo, but you know what I look good naked! Fuck stop being Fat! This thread must of made you feel better about yourself because you don't use straps. Wow good for you. Now let's discuss some real issues in life and stop with the insecurities.
Hey bro don't beat yourself up too bad. Even though you are not cool, have the grip strength of a 13 year old girl, and are a flaming homo doesn't mean we all can't be friends.
This is all in good fun. We don't need to be mean.
Oh and we like to refer to it as being "big boned" around here. Calling people the F(at) word is just too hurtful.
I ain't talking to you no more. You haven't called since I bought you those pokadotted tights for Cristmas. Sorry it's not what you asked for but the fuchsia half tank top and crotchless spandex shorts I could not find at any of the 3 Salvation Army's I went to.
However if you wanna make it up to me I've been looking for some rhinestone straps. I'm going full homo.
I know you're really not fat, you just have a hernia and holding 30lbs of fecal matter. ( Funny story is that what my neighbour keeps telling me)
And Ed deep down you know I love a man with a strong grip. Please stay strapless for me.
Bro, you know how bad I wanted that tank top. Why do you have to keep bringing that shit up?
LOL
A bit narcissistic of you to mention how good you look naked on a post suggesting, to develop grip strength you should put away your straps.
The subsequent CIVIL discussion on the topic was also informative.
Wow really fuckface your gonna come at me like that lol
You're a strongman competitor, I get it. What pisses me off is that you conjured up an audience and the comments really tickle my fancy. Like it's some kind of tough guy thing if you don't wear straps. Do you guys really pay attention if someone is wearing straps, belts, gloves, wraps and downplay their toughness or something? PREVENTION of injury is what comes first when I walk in the gym, not trying to play tough guy. I'd dare any individual to approach me and tell me that my grip strength will suffer due to straps. Nor do I give a shit if Joe blow needs more grip strength to pull on his boyfriends prick harder.
Here is a tough guy thing for ya. Go into a calorie deficit for weeks and try to keep your bench over 400lbs and squat over 500lbs. Do that and report back.
And please stop with the Time to educate threads. You shouldn't be running tren or half this shit. Didn't you have a heart attack or some shit a few months ago? Most people here are looking to use these compounds with health in mind while eating well. Not eating a ton of shit and running grams of gear.
Sorry if I offended you but I'm just tired of the hypocrite crap, I'm better and tougher than you attitute (not just in this thread either). You can't run around telling people how to run gear safely when you don't apply it to yourself!
I'm no advocate of the politically correct ways that have plagued this country for the last decade, and sometimes somebody just needs to speak up and stop the nonsense. Please stick to what you know. We have a strongman forum here, use it.
I'm going to ignore your comments because obviously something is up your crawl tonight .. hope you feel better
Let it go bro. You know Guitarplayer must be having a bad day, this is not like him.
It's all good I forgive him in the past !!
I tried them like 20 years ago and didn't like them. Nothing wrong with the ability to crush someone's hand if the need arises. Haha
there are two reasons i find straps valuable. one, my back is significantly stronger than my forearms. if i am doing heavy bb rows, i dont want to stop because my grip gives out, i want to stop because my back is fatigued.
secondly. i think straps help disengage your arms from back lifts. it is easier to focus on elbow pull and using your back rather than just moving the weight when you dont have to focus on gripping it.
if i am lifting back, i want to use my back muscles. these are two ways that straps help me personally. like makawa said, the judges dont care about my grip strength on stage. that being said, if you powerlift or strongman, it is obviously much more important to train and have good grip strength.
Back to the knee wrap questions. Any points while using them that you can add? My concern is to use them only while leg pressing heavy. Im not squatting enough weight to need them. Do you wrap them in a certain direction(shingling).
I use to workout in a gym that didn't allow chalk use. I will say straps helped me improve overall strength especially when it comes to heavy pulls and deadlifts. After I left that gym I started using chalk. I found I could lift way more using chalk compared to with out while improving grip strength and forearm size. I keep straps in my bag but haven't used them in a long time. I say lift as much as you can with out first. Then use straps for that little extra when you really need them.
I don't care for straps, but I have a really cool pair of One Ton Hooks. Can't remember the last time I used them though.
Well, for the most part I really don't care about grip strength, since the judges don't care what my grip strength is. That being said I don't use them very often but I do use them every once in awhile when doing certain sets of lat pulldowns or stiff legged deadlifts. My grip gives out first and can't fully exhaust my target muscle otherwise. I actually don't need them for pulling heavy weight and use them with my lighter weight higher rep sets or my sets where I am doing 6+ sec negatives, that is when my grip starts giving out.
When I do barbell rows I use straps for 95+ pounds. Same with shrugs. Last time I did not use a wrap for the rows my grip slipped at the last set and the weight fell on my foot, 125 pounds. I have pretty big forearms but they can only hold out for so long before they let go. I might need to spank it more and build up the wrist lol
Good thing you weren't at planet fitness or the lunk alarm would have went off. I forget about shrugs. I use straps for all of those sets.
Who has time to train at Planet Fitness when you have pizza, muffins, and tootsie rolls?
I would love to workout there now that I am bulking. lol
I would probably get booted out though if I brought out the lifting straps. To intimidating.
Just hide them under a long sleeved sweatshirt with baggy jogging pants too. Preferably with Crossfit across the chest and Pink written on the ass rofl.
You need hands of steel lol
If this arthritis keeps getting worse pretty soon I'll have the grip strength of a 12 year old girl. Sucks getting old.
I feel you .. my knees feel like they have gravel in them
For most, yes straps only handicap you. They do have their place however. Bodybuilders may not be too concerned with grip strength, and powerlifter can certainly muscle themselves out of their grip strength. Strongman competitors however I believe should never use them. These are extreme cases though, and 95% of the lifting population does not fall into these categories.
Well, Thats just like your opinion man! No seriously tho, it is good to lift without them but once you cross a certain threshold of weight their benefits outweigh the risks. If you are want max reps at heavy weight then straps will be used. If you are working at say 75% max load do some reps without
I love listening to some of the guys talk in the gym everyday is always something it makes me laugh so hard inside but I try to keep my composure. I've heard plenty of times about getting there forearms to go so they do forearm curls but for everything from dead lift to shrugs and lat pulls they use straps and never take them off why? Then you mention try lifting without them and I always get the same things either I'm to strong for my wrists or they allow me to lift heavy like I want I'm not a bitch!?!? Lifting lighter weight without straps doesn't make you anything especially not a bitch I just want to bash there heads into a wall. There are basically the little guy that stands next to me and curls the same weight I have nice slow form for medium to high reps while he throws the weight and bends backwards for 2-4 reps then talks to you about how it's great he is so much smaller but can handle the same weight (sad humorous look) just go home people haha at this point you don't get lifting. Sorry for my rant but I'm finally at another big nice gym and I have so many questions everyday about basic things like don't throw weight that's why you aren't getting GAINS , diet beats your fake pro hormone stack, and do basics when you have mastered them and proven yourself to the concept then adapt to what works for you and makes you grow. Plus no need after your self to rant GETTING THEM GAINS (Dad humorous look)
Edit- I tried to add the face but it only showed the eyes
I should have worded my response better. It seems for the month and a half I have been at my gym there are a few older guys who have put year and years of dedication into lifting bodybuilding powerlifting and so on who honestly at there strange might need them or just want to help themselves prevent injuries because of there age and I honestly get that and respect that greatly. It's really for those in my age group and a little up that don't get the dedication and slack then do things like what I said and complain the guys who use gear but won't step foot in a gym during pct and time off because they don't want to seem small or weak. For some not all they just want the positives but I bet everyone on here who has been training for year will say there a lot of ups and downs but you use have to work with and around them. Plus the people who usually have the time I honestly don't see or hear them complaining they are non stop working hard in the gym! I honestly hope one day I keep myself on track to be there and off topic because of everyone on this forum in the past 2.5 months I quit my last cycle early to use your guys advice I can never be better and far superior to what I used to be before I found everyone thank you honest!
I don't care for them. I see a few guys bragging about finally getting their 500# deadlift that can't handle 385 without them. You didn't lift it, you accessorized. If it's not raw, it doesn't really count.
I have one buddy that tore some tendons in his wrist pulling weight he had no business pulling with a limp wrist.
I totally agree! You'll get shit forearms by using lifting straps all the time.
However it has its place in some back exercises
I only use lifting straps if it is necessary for the heaviest back row sets. I feel that my grip gives up before the complete back muscle failure. Even the great Dorian Yates was using lifting straps.
+2
I hate lifting straps. Lifting straps are the strap on dildos of the gymnasium. Where I lift...if one uses a lifting strap, it is required to say "no homo" after each rep.
Strap on dildos are for those without a penis, lifting straps are for those without a grip.
Just remember kids, if you have to strap something on, it's because you lack something.
We can just fight.. lol
Lol. I'm very disappointed to hear that you are a supporter of lifting straps. Come on! I guess as long as you don't wear weight lifting gloves (no homo) we can still be friends.
Come on bro, you know I don't wear no damn sissy mits! lol
Sissy mits.. lmao
I'm a firm believer in straps, gloves, belts, wrist wraps and knee wraps and spandex tights. You can't do battle with crossfit without coming in fully prepared.
Lol. But you see, very few bros are badass enough to pull that. You of course are an exception to the rule. Hell, you could make a Fannie pack look badass. Lol
Boom
Great advice, sometimes I think my dam grip is to strong. Alot of others at gym say dam I wish I had your forearms. Same here I tell them work on that grip and dont use straps or other aids...
Samething guy at work ALWAYS wears that dam back brace. I told him he is just making his back muscles weak wearing that dam thing all the time when it isn't needed.
I have to use straps because I had operations on both wrists for ganglion cysts. Weak wrists.
I have this in my left wrist....painful is an understatement!
Getting very weak also :(
