+ 1 Steroids and Former Addicts
To start off, I do not mean to imply that steroids are inherently addictive. What I mean to discuss here is people with former addiction problems getting clean then turning to steroid use. It is far more common than I would have thought.
Currently at my gym there are 8 or 10 recovering addicts and several more who have been recovered, specifically heroin addiction. I know this because one of them is a friend and he introduced me to these other as a means to try and give basic training and diet advice. The point being is that I have seen many of theses individuals grow into their fitness life and start steroids. Now these are adults and I am not going to debate on their choice cause I do not have the right to that, but unfortunately many of them seem to have an "addicts attitude" with these compounds. They take the strongest anabolics, never cycle off, and imo take too much. This isn't all of them but a few that would make even Rich Piana say "THAT IS TOO FUCKING MUCH GOD DAMNIT"
My question to the forum is whether people with prior addictions are at a greater risk for the misuse of steroids due to their personalities. I do not mean to imply these people aren't good people, but we all have personality traits that affect how we live and interact. Should people with former addictions take extra consideration in their choice to start steroids. I would love to hear your takes and anything to add to the topic.

Alphamale500Personally, I do believe ppl with a history of addiction are at a greater risk of becoming addicted to, or misusing/abusing AAS. I'm not trying to put anyone down because I myself have a history of addiction. This topic really does seem like a fairly big issue that affects many ppl and needs to be discussed. Not to forget that addiction affects the entire family and friends of an addict, and not just the addict themselves.
Many of my own personal friends have gone through treatment and then next thing you know, they're in the gym training with AAS. Now, I'm not saying that there's absolutely something wrong with it. But I think that the timing of their AAS use after getting clean definitely has something to do with whether it's a good idea or not. For a recovering addict straight out of recovery, jumping right into using AAS might not be the best idea, imo.
However, for a recovering addict that has been clean and sober for a decent/good amount of time, I don't really see anything wrong with using AAS "responsibly". It may even be helpful to former addicts that are trying to stay clean, by having a new hobby and lifestyle, or getting back into the lifestyle they once had. I guess someone in the addiction field would have to determine what a decent/good amount of time is.
But then again, for the former addict that really has a history of abusing everything he touches, AAS use especially too soon after recovery may not be a smart move. It may just become another addiction to fill the void of using drugs. And they may not even realize what's happening at first. They may just believe their AAS use/abuse is just a new healthy lifestyle. I'm sure some of us former addicts can understand when you, or better yet your disease is trying to tell you that everything's fine and there's nothing to worry about. I know I can anyway.
And I certainly believe that using AAS has to stimulate some of the same parts of the brain as street drugs do, to a certain degree. Or even just the whole process of loading the needle and injecting AAS may stimulate certain pleasure receptors or areas in the brain. Just like when some active addicts are in physical withdrawal, they'll even inject plain water and actually get, or believe they're getting some relief from withdrawal. I guess when you think about it, what's really the difference if it's some kind of placebo effect or not, as long as they're getting relief!
So, I think AAS use by former addicts can really be a Godsend or a curse! If you're truly a "former addict", then you shouldn't have much of a problem with misuse/abuse. Imo, the timing of when a former addict gets into/back into AAS use after recovery is a really big factor. Also, "after recovery" is an important part of the whole process. And I shouldn't forget to mention the power of addiction!!
We like to be increasingly huge and defined. The truth is that without steroids you will never be able to achieve such results that it makes you look more and more beautiful in the mirror.
It's the shortest way.
The least harmful and that makes you feel good... (in our opinion).
If you are an intelligent person you also have many women around you, and if you have a good job you have a good time.
..well, all this has a price to pay...falling is easy.
Imagine a sex addict before steroids. Then add steroids
Holly hell we would have eroids outbreak lol. We would all have more kids then we have now
AnonI remember my first cycle after 3-4 years...God damn I felt like a complete deviant..going from Natty test in 300's all the way up to 3000...yes please.
I've have a past with Opioids myself , so I begin with saying its all a choice typically made when your face down at lifes very bottom to rise up and grow up.
Steroids are not the addiction , the results are the addiction and the pain in my case ;) . In all seriousness there are worse addictions to have than bodybuilding or strength training . I suppose maybe a case could be made that Tren has truly addictive qualities , which is why I choose to leave her sexy ass on the shelf , I catch her looking at me though mmm those titties . I digress bodybuilding is one of the best things that ever happen to me , and aas are a natural progression of bodybuilding meaning you work out long enough steroids will happen.
x 2 My M'Fkin 'bropain' Lol :))
I'd say over 90% of people on here have had previous addiction problems to one thing or another, myself included. Its re-known that taking up exercise be it keep fit based or weight training is extremely effective at making you feel positive, focused and a massive sense of fulfilment. SO much so its often more satisfying than your drug of choice was. If you choose to do weights then you are always wanting to progress be it strength, muscle mass, leanness, endurance etc and once you have reached your natural genetic limits the only way to keep progressing is with steroids. Its not the steroids that are the addiction - Its the brilliant feeling & euphoria you get from training that you are ALWAYS chasing with every session. That to me isn't a bad thing at all.
As someone that has had a dark past with but have been abstinent from mind and mood altering substances for 12 years I can vouch that there is a greater risk for addicts. First off one thing most addicts are always searching for is instant gratification. When it comes to quick gratification in the world of fitness the first thing that’s going to come to mind is steroids. Unfortunately they are illegal in the US so once you decide to obtain them you have already fell into a pattern of criminal behavior which in recovery is considered “falling back into old ways.” I don’t think you will find people robbing their grandmothers for a cycle but you have cognitively chose to commit a crime. Then when it comes to cycling steroids, most addicts know nothing about moderation and have always lived by the idea that the most is the best. So from personal experience from someone who spent several years in active addiction, has done a few cycles, and currently is on TRT it is a struggle to not go balls to the wall. It’s difficult and it should be taken into serious consideration.
Addicts are addicts. Recovered or not. Are they at greater risk? Of course. When you’re shooting smack in a gutter somewhere you’ve allowed yourself to be ok with death. You’ve conditioned yourself for high risk behavior.
Pumping 3 cc’s of tren after that seems mild. My 2 cents.
Scar tissue is stronger than regular tissue. Realize your strength and move on.
Alphamale500Absolutely! Personally, I don't believe that "once you're an addict, you're always an addict!" If you were strong enough to overcome and beat your addiction, then in my book you're no longer an addict. Maybe you're a former addict, but you're not always an addict! If you catch a curable infection and then are cured, are you always infected? Of course not. And that's the way I think about addiction. Some ppl may have a different opinion on the subject, and that's fine. But that's how I see it. FUCK ADDICTION!!!
I can appreciate that. And I didn’t mean anything negative by my statement I know it looks a little harsh without context. I’m an addict. Recovered and 8 years clean but the tendencies, way of thinking, those characteristics will always be there. If you’re lucky you manage them well, eventually. In some cases they have been to my benefit (bodybuilding is a perfect example).
Edit: also for me, it helps to remember I’m always an inch from a relapse. One decision away from rock bottom. I probably project a bit of that mindset onto other addicts because I think it will help but everyone is different.
Alphamale500Hey bro. Btw, my comment above was just a general comment towards how addiction is viewed, and my views on addiction. It has nothing at all to do with your comments. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
Appreciate what you do here Greg but factually I’m pretty sure scar tissue, or fibrotic tissue, actually never reaches the same tensile strength as normal tissue. I think it’s around 70-80% of its original strength. It’s thicker, more condensed, but not actually stronger.
We would call that a metaphor sir... I have to say much respect don’t want to seem like a dick. Or the great Pale will swing his almighty ban hammer at me.
It's an old quote. If you're concerned about the literalness of the quote, you've missed the point...
Ahhh just wasn’t familiar with the quote. Probably before my time. I do see the point then! Carrying on
Well wasn't that a fine kettle of fish...
Nice quote tho
AnonHenry Rollins!
Addiction centers in the way we think. Obsession the never ending stream of thought reLating to using. Compulsion once started I can't stop. When I use juice I don't get that empty feeling that I want to fill with drugs. I'm not obsessed about the juice so I don't think in my experience that it's addicting. Also anyone who starts juice and does not research enough and just wants the best is going to go the strongest route like Tren. It got nothing to do with addicts. How many kids I have run into saying they have done or are on Tren and it looks like they just walked into the gym that day. What I do need to watch are triggers like using needles. How does that make me feel. Does it bring old memories. Self esteem is affected so much by using if I don't watch my actions it could get to a point we're I feel so shitty bout myself that using is a good option in my head.
RustyhookerLotta folks chatter here....might give info.

The real question is, are they prior addictions? Or have they just refocused their addictive behavior.
If they have truly resolved their addictive behavior along with their addiction to whatever substance they were using. Then, no, IMO they are not at greater risk.
On the other hand, if they've conquered their chemical dependency but still struggle with "temptation" they have not yet "recovered" from their addictive behaviors and are at great risk.
This can be a bitter truth to accept if one feels they've killed the monkey on their back and are now zealously into health and fitness. If they were to do some serious soul searching they'd come to realize the monkey isn't dead... it just became Richard Simmons.
Right Greg can I give u +2 for that? This second part isn’t directed at you, but your right, my drug monkey has been off my back for many years BUT it creeps up in my life in many other areas. Sex,porn, money, work, anything. I once became so obsessed with these Thomas the tank engine tracks for my kid, i was buying swarms of them to make the coolest biggest track and allll the trains, to the point where that’s all I thought about .... without even realizing it, then I snapped out of it.... everyone is different but My stuff edges in to every part of my life it can.... I have to stay diligent... odds are I won’t use drugs again BUT a few bad choices of addictive behavior can guide me there really fast... z dużą miłością .. much love
AnonNew tattoo idea? No, right? Bad idea..
In old English across ur upper back bro
First of all great topic! IMO people with prior addiction are definitely at a greater risk for the misuse of steroids and ultimately replacing there former addiction with steroids...just think about how people that dont have an addictive personality feel while running a good cycle...you feel great and then you start to noticing the gains and changes to your physique and the feeling just multiplies to an euphoric feeling..like being on top of the world...this can be very dangerous to someone with an addictive personality... IMO the steroids would likely just feel the void of whatever they were previously addicted to and they would probably justify the use as better because of the physical gains and improvements they could make by using such compounds...at the end of the day even too much of a good thing can be bad
AnonThis in itself can be dangerous for some! Happy with too much test, sweet bod (no homo) and confidence through the roof... trifling. Ass. Hows.
