Popcorn

ad

Recently had some family over. To my surprise they were shocked that we made our popcorn on the stove and didn’t have the microwave bags. It then turned into a debate of which was better, which then led to a trip to the store to buy the opposing teams brand of microwave popcorn. Curious on what the crowd chooses here.

Edit: we make popcorn with vegetable oil in the cooking pot, then lathered in real butter and sprinkled in sea salt.’

Yeah I walked by the skinny pop and grabbed a bag of Blue Diamond almonds at the pharmacy yesterday.
If I want popcorn, I need the good stuff :-)

IrishJerk's picture

Yeah I like to make it with my popper with real butter instead of oil, sometimes toss some grated cheese in it after it’s popped. If I’m feeling lazy I will toss a bag of Orvels Movie theatre in the nuke. Can’t beat the old fashioned way though. I remember the old jiffy pop it was good too but I was still in elementary school so what did I know.
Never bought an air popper it taste like compost without salt and butter.

Dang I’m hungry again!

JL's picture

Never seems like the bowl is big enough!! lol

I have an air popper. Hands down best way to make it. Then dump some melted butter on it. Real damn butter too

JL's picture

I agree with the real butter. My kids like watching the air popper. We must have bad luck with them. Burned 2 or 3 of them out.

fusebox's picture

Still on the first one. Had it for like five years. Pop up a bowl or two a week.

My kids always loved the popcorn that came in the little metal pan and the foil dome would expand as it cooked. I think they just liked to watch the foil expand tho. I’m a homemade popcorn guy myself.

Hello Sir,

Think I am the only lazy one on here, I would pop around the local cinema and grab a large one, probably not the best option but definitely the quickest one and the most convenient.

Regards

Heck popcorn at the cinema is around $20 a large bag now isn’t it? Lol

I’m all stovetop myself. I just think it’s much better.
And my 8 year old daughter showed me this one

‘A report from the FDA indicates that a chemical coating used in microwave popcorn bags breaks down when heated into a substance called perfluorooctanoic (PFOA). ... Another study has found an acid that can be extracted from the chemical causes cancer in animals and is “likely to cause cancer in humans.” -https://www.care2.com/greenliving/dangers-of-microwave-popcorn.html

They talk more about another chemical in the fake butter flavoring causing lung disease in the factory workers bagging it.

We’ve bought all the hot air poppers and junk over the years, but there’s nothing like making it on the stovetop.

JL's picture

Scary shit in those bags. Plus anything with that long of a shelve life cant be good for you!

I think we have burned through 2 or 3 air poppers in the last few years. We get them as gifts. Stove top is the tried and try method in our house. I like to apply the less is more principal in my life. Air popper equals one more appliance we have to store.

shawn0712's picture

These days storage space is getting tight. Because we need all these kitchen aide and tachmdnts that we only use on major holidays. Lol. I’m happy with the old pot.

giardap's picture

Sunflower oil (then butter but onlybaftwr the popcorn is cooked!) and sea salt
Almost the same over here, bar oil choice

Far superior to packs which usually use lard or a margerine sort of substance and shitty salt

Greg's picture

There's your problem right there, You need to cook popcorn in coconut oil

IrishJerk's picture

Too expensive but it is probably healthy.

Greg's picture

Not really. It's the reason movie theater popcorn tastes so good

IrishJerk's picture

Hmm I had to google it :-) your right and it’s good.
You can teach an old dog new tricks.

I thought they used canola oil like all the other big businesses have been using, that stuff is nasty It has ruined my favorite French frys.....

JUICEBOX0331's picture

Wonder if you can cook it in MCT oil?

I have a skillet oil popcorn and some butter but how do you keep them from popping all over I might have to try it

JL's picture

We use a big pot with a lid. No mess.

333's picture

Got ya I don't have a lid I'll just get a ping pong paddle and have to bat them back in lol

JL's picture

You can use tin foil instead. Keep the pot moving so the popped kernels don’t burn on the bottom.

333's picture

Lmao now I kinda feel stupid from my last comment I really didn't think about foil hahaha

JL's picture

lol.. your way sounds more entertaining then mine, other then the mess!

333's picture

My son's girlfriend bought him these mini packs like single size they work great you just pop them in the microwave

JL's picture

I concur. Plus watching the kiddos lite up making popcorn is all more worth the while. I even prefer homemade over theater.
