Plates facing in or facing out
ad
So went to a gym where while on the bar plates had to face in but when racking they had to face out( odd rule) but it is the best gym I’ve personally ever trained at and miss that place miserably.
So what’s Yalls thoughts on this?

Plates must face out, this is to ensure that when the plates is picked up four fingers lay flat on the smooth side of the plate and the thumb/inner forearm is engaged in lifting and stabilizing.
Thus concludes my forearm workout.
I'd think it would be a braille thing for you.
usually in but sometimes I just don't give a shit, one will be in, one will be out, one might be a different plate altogether. Other times I need the lines to match up or my day is ruined
I have always been face in on the bar, face out when racked.
I’m an OCD guy… face in on the bar out on the rack. Train with old iron weights at home and rubber at the gym. I swear the old weights actually weigh more.
I had this discussion with An OG body builder named Frank Columbo (RIP).
Frank said the reason old school bodybuilders stack plates face in, is because it’s a mark of humility and of an alpha. It symbolizes the fact that you don’t care what people see you lift, that it only matters to yourself what you lift.
He tied it back to the ghetto boys song “Dam it feels good to be a gangster”
And I quote:
“A real gangsta-ass nigga never runs his fucking mouth
'Cause real gangsta-ass niggas don't start fights
And niggas always gotta high cap
Showing all his boys how he shot 'em
But real gangsta-ass niggas don't flex nuts
'Cause real gangsta-ass niggas know they got 'em”
After that speech..…I always stack the weights face in.
Hope that helps,
All my love, no homo
Ed
I bet that sure was an experience hear Franco rap like that LMFAO
Was Arnie there doing the beatbox underneath it? lol
Picture an old man with an Italian accent rapping that.
I used to worry about that and finding matching plates. Now I just grab whatever is closest to where I am. I do enjoy watching the OCD guys in the gym. This one guy broke his PR last week. Checked each side of the bar a total of 9 times to make sure the plates were flush.
Tell that gym to suck muh balls. LOLOL fuck however I grab them is how I put them on. I really could care less
All the plates in my gym look exactly the same on both sides. Haven’t seen one sided plates in about twenty years, but I was always taught to face them inwards .
I go inwards myself. Yeah one of my two gyms have those same sided, black rubber covered plates. Thing is they still slightly move regardless if they're not suppose to move. Now my main ole school, non air conditioned gym is where the rusty standard iron plates are. They will indeed move alot if using alot of weight with no collar. You can hear them banging and see them moving! Gotta be careful in that case.
Mine aren’t rubber coated. Just exactly the same on both sides with hand holes which make them easier to grab
JohnJuiceI really don't care these days, cuz most of the gyms I go has rubber coated weights that I HATE, but if they were full iron ones I would go facing out, I heard It helps lessen plate wobble during lifts if they are facing in, but who df cares lol.
I don't know what it is but for some silly reason my rusted iron plates seem heavier. 45 pounds is 45 pounds I know. I just enjoy those plates way more than those rubber coated ones, I've been using them for all my lifting besides those Olympic plates. Those modern plates you're using are ok for me.
Troy interlocking plates in my home gym rusted from sweat and tears... mostly tears.
You can buff the rust out.
Nice! Father Time with the Win!
Nice OG plates. TROY made the best dumbells also...the Grey iron ones with finely knurled handles, basically 10lb plates stacked to desired total weight. The dumbell itself..can be tightened if it comes loose by spinning on ground or with Allen key...they also made black rubberized dumbells also, a bit thicker than the Grey steel ones though.
Make sure you have a tetanus shot before stepping in Greg's gym
What a sight to see! Totally forgot about those. Nothing like old school rusty plates of iron...nothing
I know the ones bud - I have some myself. Tri grip plates they are called.
O I gotcha, those kinds. I just see rubber coated or rusted, ole school iron plates. Those you're talking about are updated modern era weights. I feel ya.
I think they will be bumper plates bud that are designed not to move anyway.
No rubber on them
Folks can do whatever they want to. Even though I know the official way I tend to put plates on all facing inwards. Now if someone doesn't want to use a collar and hurts themselves, then just don't go complaining like a dumb ass to the gym owner because you were being to careless or lazy.
They go on however I put them on. That said, I seem to always have them facing out. just easier to grab that way. I really could give two shits about how someone puts them on the bar though, Just don't tell me how I have to put them on.
I had an art teacher in 5th grade tell me great art is not symmetrical, so I’m thinking one facing in on one side one facing out on the other. Be an artist.
Then in that case put a 45 on one side and (4x10)+5 on the other.
Masterpiece! --
It's been a while since I've seen a gym with actual metal plates. Moat have the rubberized plates now where it doesn't matter. When I do have metal plates the first one goes in the next one goes out. I just feel better when I have the flat sides touching. After the first 2 it really doesn't matter
THE OFFICIAL ANSWER is first plate on each side of barbell faces in and the plates after first plates always face out. So it's a total of 2 plates facing in and the rest are facing out. Collar at both ends.
Powerlifting competitions that don't use Olympic weights but use standard weights use this method.
I think the owner / manager of your gym has too much free time…..::
SwaveyDPrecisely. Why would someone give a fuck the way plates face lol
Gonna kick me out and lose money over something so stupid?
True. That makes sense to me.
He never kicked anyone
Just an old school dude and the only gym owner that I’ve ever had personally tell me thank you for coming and generally care about progress and make sure no one did stupid shit.
Got a handshake every morning taught me a lot.
That being said silly rule just wanted to gauge some interest
In all honesty weight plates are supposed to face inwards on a barbell to reduce wobble when lifting, even though they do look better facing outwards with the weight displayed on the plate. Then again the amount of idiots these days that seem to think it looks cool by not putting collars on the end, does it even matter anyway as they soon all become loose and distort the lift.
Do we still need a collar if we only have 1 plate on
HAHAHA!! I'm sure you do the lift slow and controlled Mak so I doubt they will move anyway Lol
It boggles the mind why anyone would leave the collars off. Seems that you’re likely not lifting an appropriate amount of weight if you’re not concerned about the overall balance of your bar. How many times do we all have to see idiots let plates slide off their bars before we do better?
Exactly mate!! Some of these are strong and experienced lifters who you see doing it in the videos too, they are going for a big bench or deadlift and then when they begin to grind you see the plates edging and rattling across the bar until it becomes so unbalanced it then causes them to miss the lift!! You sit there thinking but if you put 2 colar's on that wouldn't of happened? WTF
My chest is weak, my legs are strong. I’m not offended in any way whatsoever if the person before me left 3 or 4 plates on the leg press. I dunno, maybe it’s me, maybe it’s the type of gym you belong to, but 2 or 3 plates should be on the leg press at all times. Just my opinion.
Stupid control freak.
If I'm grabbing a 45lb plate with both hands I don't want to be bothered to rotate the plate to put it on the bar. That said, it seems natural to have them facing out on the bar and the rack. A twist of the wrist, or double fist, out and out is habitual.
