Hey brothers so already talked to a graphic designer friend, and should help me figuring out logo and that, the name of the brand gonna be FITNESS IMPERIUM, from Latin meaning empire, thinking of putting the out line of a gladiator on juice, with my hair style wich is unique so it will look like me, I would be getting units from china, have the washed and printed over there, gonna do web site and everything and just ship from home, what do you guys think? What are the pros and the cons of opening a small clothing company? All input is welcomed thanks guys let me know it means a lot, as I'm going solo on this one, all cash is coming out of my pocket, just wanna know if somebody that is good in biz can give some help, thanks brothers

I'm not in that type of business, but I have two friends that are.

One was an employee for Versace and the other Salvatore ferragamo.

What I have notice is that my friend that use to work at Versace is running a very successful line. The reason is he stayed away from today's fashion gimmicks. He refuses to make plain or graphic t shirts and jeans.

Mostly button down, sweaters, shoes etc.
the friend that worked at ferragamo does everything. Including work out clothes. He loses money on T shirts and jeans ( profit margins are low) he also does snickers.

Not shore if this help. If you have a specific question I could ask them. I known both of them for 15 years

I find it hard to believe that the profit margin on jeans is so low when the "brand" I like averages 180$ each ...

I don't know much about it. All I know is most of his fabrics are really nice and soft. He avoids buying anything from China. Mostly Europe and a few places here.(USA) but his jeans price average is 90-120$ his pants are around the same.

I spoke to him he yesterday about it, he said after you factor the labor, shipping, and rent he said he is making about 30$ on a pair. Less if he runs a sale or promotion

He avoids buying anything from China.

I see why now. most everything is made purchased and made in China or 3rd world countries where labor is practically free

He's got to make up for it with volume

Unless the name is tied to some sort of performance wear, why would anyone just buy a shirt with a random made up name and logo? A tshirt is just a tshirt. Might as well go on a site like Custom Ink and save your $4000.

me and a few lads tried this out a couple of years ago, did not kick off and no money to be made, i mean we can walk into kmart here and get everlast, champion and even nike sometimes for 5-10 bux, it is a very big market to try and get into for the small guy, they mass produce millions of clothes in sweat shops, the brand name we had was awesome and one of a kind, we even had a patent pending on the label, we had a line up made of tanks, hats, t shirts and hoodies, we could not break into main stream, you can try ebay and stuff but on there you will be luck to get a couple of bux for a top... p.s i still have the label covered and will not share the name because i still have a dream it will kick off, but it most likely wont. good luck

Only advice I can give is dont overextend yourself too quickly. Doing this out of your home during your own time, theres only so many shirts you can handle. Know this number, and have a plan if you do happen to hit a large purchase order....just like the sources here, if you cant deliver the product quickly it will likely be the last time you get that client.

Just make sure you actually produce stuff that guts people like me ;)

First of all, I truly wish you all the success in the world. Go make that shit happen!

My little piece of advice is this :
The fitness/ bodybuilding industry, like most others, is closely watched by very impressionable people. Marketing is all about who is wearing your stuff. If I buy your shirt and wear it to the gym, no one cares. If Mr. Olympia wears it on YouTube or in a magazine, sales are going to skyrocket!
When you go to expos, get your shirts in the hands of people that are known.
You might also be able to negotiate a banner on some websites that are industry specific while cruising these forums.
Best of luck

Hi have 4000 dollars, going to try and do something like www.blowngear.com, aiming at fitness people, cross fit people as well as bodybuilders male and female, was thinking of marketing trough facebook, instagram and twitter, going to be getting stands at shows and expo, going to shipping from home and getting everything set up from here, going to send emails to China suppliers and look at prices, I don't know the cost per transaction is, but I'm sending you a friend request, can you help me out?

italian92101's picture

Man I'm going to put in all I have, I have good ideas, good feeling and I'm positive, I can market it well, what did you mean with collateral ?cash? Mine would be a much smaller biz than a supp. Store, I would have home as storage, and would be shipping from here, I'm going to get together with a graphic designer friend of mine within next 2 weeks, and figure out site and graphics for shirts and site, and tonight sending email to China distributors, man I better come up with something original, or its going to be a flop..
