Warming up before lifting
I have been having some major shoulder pain lately, so i have been trying to find ways to get through the pain and still continue my workouts. I know in the past i never took the time to properly warm up, maybe just a few quick reps. From what i have been reading, warming up the muscles before putting a heavy work load on them can help them perform at a higher intensity, and lead to bigger gains.
By increasing muscle temperature you increase the speed of muscle contraction, blood and nutrient flow to the muscles, and decrease muscle resistance. Warm ups also help release more oxygen into the muscle and calcium which gives stronger muscle contractions and leads to something called the Treppe Effect, which some how makes the muscle more pliable.
Also do not stretch before weight lifting, Research has shown you can lose from 5-30% of your strength by stretching. although daily stretching can help to prevent muscle injuries. So in short Warming up increases your body’s core temperature, increases blood-flow to your muscles, establishes your range of motion, and increases the secretion of synovial fluid, which lubricates your joints. I know for alot of people including myself this is often a neglected part of working out, which could make a big difference.

always warm up and cool down
I tend to do one warm up set if that muscle group is completely cold. After that I go as heavy as I can, i dont move up in weight each set, i start heavy. This is to maximize the energy and strength i have, i dont like to waste time working my way up to a mid-level heavy weight, when i can go start heavy. I avoid injury but removing any momentum from my reps, moving slow and controlled. I haven't been injured for a whole year, since i started this school of thought. Works for me!
Thats kind of what i always use to do , very short one or 2 set warm up then jump into heavy lifting. i have a severe should injury now that i dont know what it is, but it is stopping me from getting where i want to be right now
scootertrampExcellent advice!
CleyonGood advice. I start lite, and work my way up. I've decided to stop going for max weight for a while If I can't crank 5x5s out with a weight, then I need to reduce it.
AnonI have been having my wife rub me down with bio freeze or tiger balm before a work out, and that seems to really help.
Even though I start with a simple 135 on the bench, sometimes I think a better warm up is needed.
ECM This is good advice !
thanks bro, i will have to try the bio freeze
I'm a huge stickler with warmups, especially on shoulder days. Guys will see me doing 2-3 sets of 20 reps with 10lb pink dumbbells talkin shit sayin I'm wasting energy. But if doin 10lb pink dumbbells wears you out then you have no business in the weight room
Going on 6 years now no injuries and I can attest it to always warming up
