University for my Sister

ad

Ok so my sister is applying to uni in a couple months and shes stuck between a couple degress and programs. She wants a decent 70-80k salary with just a steady 9-5 job. Here are her choices, we are in canada so i wont get into uni specific courses but just general areas.
- human resources management
- psychology (can still lead to human resources but isnt as specific)
-criminology
-political science
- public administration
-socoilogy
-criminal justice

Hahaha, I bet every social science graduate who ever lived is would like to know the answer to your 70-80k question.
Listen to Goth. I completely agree.

Gothic is right completely I have made it my sole goal to get through school with little to no debt if possible while remaining in a major that has a good job market. The first thing I had to swallow is that no one graduates with a B.S. and makes a 6 figure salary, especially in this economy. Now I am working towards my masters and being payed to go to school and my tuition is covered thanks to staying on scholarship through my B.S.
The best advice I can give your sister is to go to school and take it very seriously. Do not screw around like many of my friends did because now they are 60k in debt and working night shifts and are miserable. First semester take your core classes and talk to professors, they know how many grads are getting jobs and if there are grants and scholarships available, plus if they like you they are great help and can get in touch with people which is worth a lot.

My wife is a psychologist, and she is SCREAMING from across the room right now to avoid the social sciences at all costs. There is no money in it---especially now that funding for many state-administered programs has dried up in the face of the crumbling economy.....and there is far less political will to bring in jobs that create nothing. Cities all across this nation are laying cops off left and right.....Prison systems in EVERY state are cutting psych staff and guards....Political science majors can look forward to a job voluntering for the local city council candidate, or intern for a free-handed maggot politician.....and public administration is a fancy way of saying..."I wanna continue on with school after I graduate", because that's the only option she'll have after she spends the 100K on a degree in worthlessness (that she'll never be able to pay back).
Do your sister a favor and tell her to quit trying to save the world and concentrate on saving herself, because in another 18-36 months that's what we will all be concentrating on. That means TECH, TECH and more tech....and steering clear of bullshit like art history, philosophy, and other humanities.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY AND A DOCTOR OF MEDICINE????----One prescribes drugs, and the other one may as well BE on drugs.

Amen brother! It's so bad out there I have two licensed Paramedics on my staff. As security guards. Enough said.

Medical is where it's at. Radiology like Xray tech or nuclear medicine. They make bank. Nuc Med guys are over 100k easy

gatorbits's picture

Are you sure bout this...must live in a high income area perhaps...
techs dnt make 100k...like 40I maybe some colleges exaggerate tge earnings but IRL its 40-60 per year...
RN don't even make 100k
Nurse practitioners and PA make that and above..but not techs that a laughable...I really wish they did though..so I could make 130+ (rn) .

I work in a hospital and donate pot to a Nuc Med guy from my hospital. Trust me he makes at least 100k And just so u know the housekeepers make 40k at my hospital. Ya know how I know? I sign off their timecards. My lead housekeeper makes $23+ n hour. U must live in a very poor state bro.

I say the thing to do is to go to the uni she likes most. The entire college experience is what is most valuable--friends, contacts, exposure to new ideas in an environment that feels like a match for her personality. The degree that is right for her will make itself clear in time. I started in art school and ended up in the sciences. There is almost zero chance of guessing right at the outset.

Which is a good thing. Can you remember what it was like to be 17 or 18 years old? Now imagine that you making decisions for the rest of your life.

If that was the case, I'd be a 40 year old with a mohawk and an obsolete record store, railing against my interfering bald spot and that ruinsome itunes.

What does she love to do?

Money isnt everything. As a matter of fact, most people hate there jobs and are not happy with there money.
I say tell her to find what she loves to do and do that!
I'm a chef. I love to feed people and make them happy. I take so much pride in what i do. No amount of money could ever make me happier than doing what I love, having high standards, and really putting my heart and soul into every dish I create!

She doesnt kno thats the problem its all equal to her bro
