+ 5 To shake or not to shake...

ad

That is the question?
So I hear the constant debate over how many shakes one should have in a day and I guess the perfect answer is none. Problem is thats tough to do. I always say I'd much rather have 50 grams in a shake rather than skip a meal if its just impossible. In fact, If I know I have something going on that may take me 3 hrs away from meals I take a 75 gram shake in water with me in my shaker...such as the DMV, jury duty, dru nk in public arrest etc.....they won't let you bring your beer in the tank!
So anyway, heres my suggestion and I gave this to a guy yesterday who has a serious problem in his schedule getting in 6 meals. Get a food dehydrator if you don't already have one and buy turkey and beef to slice and make jerky. There are marinades that are amino acid so you can stay away from the high salt. Yesterday I was out so I grabbed up a jack links turkey jerky and this stuff has 30% of your daily salt intake in a single serving. With home made using amino marinades you would have to eat poundage to get to those numbers! Lol
The point is you can easlity carry this stuff and chew on it as much as you like and if you are someone who has to opt for the shake more than you'd like, chew on and 1/8th pound of this stuff before after or both and the shake was a much better option with the combination. You could even opt for a 25 gram shake given the extra protein here and get the best of both worlds. Btw, done right in the proper low salt marinade this turkey jerky is off the hook, you just never get tired of it!
At the end of the day its this, no matter how busy you are or how difficult it is if you can't get the math right in cals you can't grow, theres no way around the numbers. Get some jerky in your pie hole and throw the pie out, its get big time!

So..Uhhh...I've been looking at some dehydrators lately, anyone have an opinion or recommendation on the best buy for a comfortable figure? I don't feel like spending a cycle's worth on one, as some are pretty pricey...yet I don't want a piece of trash.

You can use your oven at low temp to make jerky also. Just use a drip pan and bake at 125 degrees. It will work until you get your dehydrater. I make alot of venison and beef jerky this way along with the dehydrater. Just keep it in the fridge. It's not as good as the dehydrater but it will work. The oven is a slow cook. Just make thinner cuts against the grain. Make enough for a week at a time. Then save the money for a good dehydrater.

I have a Nesco dehydrator. Works great. Picked it up at Krogers or target. Inexpensive; which is good for a starter (hate to pay a lot of money and find I don't use it that much). I find I use it in spurts. I dehydrate everything for a few weeks, then end up putting it away for a few months.

Cool! Thanks!

DBG's picture

Good lookin...I'll check it out!

Greg's picture

As a side note: I use it to deydrate food for backpacking as well. Scambled eggs, fruit, vegetables, and even stew. And of course to make jerky.

shrapnel's picture

Same here. been thinking of getting one!

With all the money I spend on gear and protein...this is an investment that would be well worth it!! At the store the other day, I bought like $80 of halibut, filets, and chicken alone...wait and salmon too!!! HOLY SHIT!!! I still had to buy other shit too, like veggies and eggs!!

shrapnel's picture

Mine and girlrillas monthly food bill is 700+ dollars! Want a dehydrater for few dif reasons... main one is to make some jerkey for snacks.

DBG's picture

Yeah, the $80 was just for like 2-3 days worth of shit! The lady at the fresh meat counter LOVES me and knows me pretty well right now!!!

Anyone ever try Biltong? It is made in South Africa. I met a guy on a job onetime eating it. He made it himself. It is cured beef not dryed. I don't know for sure but it is cured with corriander. I don't think it has as much salt content as jerky. I've been wanting to try to make some, but it takes a special curing box. What he had was awesome. He had a chunk of flank steak that he made. Just slice of a piece and eat. It's made with animal meat in South Africa. Good stuff

The problem with liquid protein (shakes) is that the Protein passes through the digestive tract faster than it can be absorbed.

The maximum rate that whey protein can be absorbed is about 8-10 grams per hour.
It takes one and a half hours for a whey protein shake to pass through the section of the gut that can actually absorb it.

So no matter how much whey you dump in that shake you will only ingest about 15 grams of protein. Now the good news:

Digestive enzymes (added by quality makers of whey protein drinks) can increase the absorption rate by up to 125%

Greg's picture

It did; adding oats to the shake for example, drinking with a meal, or drinking it very slowly (or smaller shakes more often) all helped with the absorption.

Yep Yep x 2 . Nice post greg.

The reason why quality protein powders must be researched even as much as the aas we plan to use to save pissing it all away! and my reason for taking whey isolate upon waking and casein just before i put my head down (not down on the mrs lol) i mean down on the pillow, and the reason why sipping is the way to go and not gluging like i see a lot do.. back in the day when all you could get was casein it was so rough you had to sip it due to being like wallpaper paste, must have done my first 12yrs in this game without any powders due to them being so f-ing bad..these days they are all just like your favourite milkshakes and get wasted for fun by necking the stuff down in minutes IMO never rely on powders has your first source of protein..to be used as a SUPP or a stand bye as tread says! by far the best ever source of protein is a young bullock with its head cut off and its ass wiped stuck on a spit F-ING HEAVEN ON EARTH lmao!

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

Brother did you like those pics i sent! shame i cant post any with the copyright slammed right through the middle... shame.

Pepwarehouse's picture

hey bro i'm interested in making my own jerky. I guess i'll go do some research but if you don't mind shoot me a pm. What's the best meats, process, ect?

DBG's picture

Yeah, I have to agree with Sarge on this one; the science is there! I don't know why, but there just seems to be such a disdain for shakes on the ol' Eroids network. Why the majority opposed, I just don't know why. I simply have to go against the grain on this one...for a FEW times a day is NOT a bad thing. I try to take in as much protein as I can from FOOD, however some days I work 10 hour shifts and it's slightly difficult to not resort to a quick shot of protein every now and then to keep the body in line. Granted the first chance I get to smash some "REAL" protein(for some of y'all) I surely do, even if it's only thirty to sixty minutes later! What's it matter anyway, maybe I am flooding my system too much here and there, or I'm wasting protein...oh well, at least I'm getting LOADS of it. Better to have slightly more than not enough, right? I'm sure other folks have checked out the amount of whey/casein, etc. protein supplements some of the 'pros' use on a daily basis?...then again, sometimes I think that maybe they might be saying they use all that protein powder simply because it's thier sponsor and they're attempting to satisfy all the hoopla!!

manbearpig's picture

yeah... not gunna lie. i have had over 10 scoops of whey isolate in a day... more then once. its because at school i am too busy to cook a lot of the time. and at home my family eats like little birds. they dont like it when i raid the fridge. it grosses them out even if it is meat that i pay for. my dad is just pissed i spend all day in the kitchen.

i really do like this jerky idea. i think i am going to try it tomorrow. my mom already has a dehydrator.

ruski's picture

a local pro that owns a BB oriented deli told me the only real way to get full nutrition out of shakes is to consume them in between meals to "trick" your body into thinking its real food.

fast48's picture

I have to shake. But i eat while on the roads as well. I shake 25g every 3 hours. I also do 20 hour days beteeen school...work...gym. Its the only way I've found i keep all my muscle. Prior to I'd drop 20 solid pounds when in school

fast48's picture

That would definitly help pangs! Eating 8-12 chicken tenderlings thru the day gets old fast. But those two have been the bland combo. Will check into homemade jerkey!

Odin's Son's picture

To Shake or Not To Shake....No matter how much you shake wiggle and dance....The last drop goes in your pants..HAHAHAHA
Sorry.I just couldn't resist the urge.

jprizzle's picture

I just started making my shakes that way after reading goths post about making shakes.
I make mine with the following
4 scoops of whey protein (108 grams protein)
1 banana
1/2 cup oat meal
1/2 cup pasturized egg whites
1 cup greek yogurt
handful of blue berries
big glob of peanut butter
and just enough 1% milk to thin it out enough to drink.

I am slowly adding things to it as I go.probably gonna start adding almond butter(if i can find it cheaper) and maybe wheat grass.
I split this into 4 portions to drink through the day between meals.

Do you think this is enough or should I add something else/drink larger portions ?

shrapnel's picture

I'm needing a blender upgrade! So you guys like this Vitamix? How much is one new? I've been toying with the idea of liquid meals but i just do solids.... but if i was in a position whre i had no choice id blend food and drink it. I just cant get with you guys on the whey as a protein source other than p/w/o! Just too many other options! Whey is too fast absorbing and just doesnt have same nutrients!

shrapnel's picture

Oh im not knocking what u guys do at all! You guys both look great, so what u doin' is workin'!!! Whew weee those things are higher than giraffe pussy!!!

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

Giraffe lmao! nice bro....
