+ 2 Is it possible to get big lifting very light weight

ad

I had a serious injury and still have a long way before im 100% but need to get back in the gym. Can you get big using very light weight?

Iron-Gym-Works's picture

Sean Ray trained with lighter weight and higher reps.
Sean was competing against the likes of Flex wheeler, kevin Levrone, Dorian Yates, etc.
I always thought Sean had an Incredible Physique.
I think it is possible upto a point, you may not be as Big as some , but you will still look incredible, and probably a whole lot more Aesthetic.
just my 02.

You can get fabulous conditioning, maybe not incredible size but it's not a waste of time.

If you're using AAS, light/moderate weight, high rep will absolutely result in growth. If you're not using AAS, I doubt it..

First thing is to be in the right mindset with recovery and believing you can make progress while healing. Nutrition is 1a so don't go eating less often and shit food.

Light weight for now may be what your ability is today but by next month you'll most likely be stronger.

You can still tear down muscle fiber with light weight. Now's the time to perfect your form so... Slow negatives, pause, lift and contact for 3 seconds...repeat x20.

Alot depends with the individual with this topic. Typically lift in the heavier range but, on my kotex light days due to injury, I made some progress still but it may have been that the change in repetition siked out by body.

No matter what EAT nobodys getting big without that!

The question was "can you get big using very light weight?" now I assume he meant light in his view/experience. In that case we can talk about fibre types, their relative sizes and how stimulated, genetics etc but the bottom line is if he means light for him then no. It'll help rehab and endurance. "Ain't nothing but a peanut!) Ronnie Coleman. Don't remember seeing him squatting 20kg to failure. Yes " is light" is relative, but it was the question asked

Also ppl have a different definition. Of reps, !!.heavy weight to me was always sets of 3-4 , reps were 10 .
I've never actually got into the 15-20 range ,to me if I'm getting 15-20 its way to light .now then agion I'm not a bb ,a d maybe this is norm idk. Just my 2ce Ts on the subject.

pege's picture

My pics are posted ,I truly believe it depends on the person ,if I pick a weight I can do working sets of ten with ,I will develops my best ,and I get the most size and definition out of it .this is a question I truly believe depends on the person ,I know ppl that lift heavy and that's the only way they put size on ,but there also a baloon..
I use a moderate weight and I ,(if diet is in check,) I will clean bulk all the time

You finally crawl back out from your cave pege? Where you been hiding bro lol.

We all find what is optimum for ourselves...I get what you're throwin down brother! Intensity definitely coincides with poundage to a degree. For myself I can blow the shit out of my muscle going light(for me) as well as heavy(for me). If I lift till absolute failure(which is every session) no matter what weight, muscle tissue is getting shredded. I believe to gain strength you must go heavy. To gain muscle mass I believe its all about fatiguing the muscle entirely. Its all in how aggressively focused you are repping till you just can't go on any longer...and lol at fairy weights

bolt781's picture

Haha no doubt! The respect is likewise and even if there was a disagreement, we are brothers on this journey of constant learning through lifting, and living the way that is most positive for ourselves! Knuckles indeed brother!

mjh36's picture

Yes but it's not "light weight" as you might think. It's more using a manageable weight that is still fairly heavy but light enough to get quality reps of like 15-20 reps each set. Light weight and heavy weight are relative to each person so i always use the word manageable. Can't just stick a 35lb dumbbell in everyone's hand lol for some people 35 lbs is heavy weight.

megabolangirl's picture

I have made a lot of progress on cycle using only 35 pound dumbells for a majority of my presses, and about 135 on flat bench. This is because I was going for a pump, but for a few weeks you can make serious progress. The gear and diet can make all the difference in this case.

TheFlash85's picture

muscle fibres do not know the difference between light and heavy weight, as you stated yourself, its all about tearing those muscle fibres down, light weight can still do that, creating the "trauma" then replenishing those muscles with nutrients, protein aminos for repair and growth, the burn, the pump, etc etc, light weight with strict form, proper diet, nutrition you will get big.

pege's picture

really !!! Now what makes you the expert on muscle fiber ?? Smile
What's up my Aussie friend long time ? hope all is well
Pege
P.s. Excellent a d true answer by the way

Brother..... flash was a handful for me back in the day but i always had a soft spot for him because he really does know his stuff when it comes down to it, he is a straight shooter and i respect that and i know you well enough and can see that you understand him too.... i wouldnt want to go on a night out with him though! i get the feeling i would end up shot, stabbed or some other serious bodily damage lol..... that would be a typical day to ole flash the Ozzie Hells Angel lmao!

Pass me my pipe and slippers and leave flash with the Saturday night special tucked in his jeans... lol Smile

TheFlash85's picture

yes, im sure back when you were mod, you saved my ass from being banned more than.....100 times lol.

There's the old school German Volume Training. basically 10 sets or 10 reps of compound movements at approx 60% of 1 rep max.

Depending on the injury though that may not be a good idea. Lower back injury with deadlifts and squats? Ow. I did read about what injuries you had (bone grafts etc but was it more than just the arm, bad hit to recover from

You can literally play it safe and use a lot of unilateral exercises using machines if you can to avoid involving smaller support muscle groups.

Slow reps with lower weight does work, I know they've said about it below, there are 2 guys at my gym who do work sets with my starting warm up and they dwarf me. Of course steroids help as you need to be in a positive nitrogen balance.

I haven't really added much here the others haven't but the main reason I wanted to post was to add this link as I thought would be interesting for you
http://www.anabolicsteroids-hormoneknowledge-bigmuscles-drugs.com/traini...

Good luck bro, you sound like you've got a great attitude so that's a massive plus anyway

MedDx's picture

Can u use a TENS unit on ur arm, since u have metal in it?

true grit's picture

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator. Provides electronic pulse to the muscles causing them to contract. Could possibly be beneficial for a rehab. Google it and there's tons of info. Been around a long time. Supposedly bruce lee used a tens unit as part of his training. Don't know though.

You can possibly make some good gains with lighter wt, but a lot of things come into play. If you put enough intensity into it to stress the muscles you can grow. Also, how big have you been before. You can't count out muscle memory. Over 20 yrs ago, I watched a former pro bb, almost 50, fat, out of shape, and very little muscle mass. He did every exercise with the bar and wheels. That's all he lifted, 135 for a yr. He wouldn't let us see him the whole time. Wore big baggy shirts and those big balloon clown pants everone used to wear. When he finally let us see him, the dude was frickin huge. Muscle memory and knowledge, no gear either.

maxmuscle925's picture

Yes and No. It really depends on your genetics. It also depends if you are enhanced are not and to what degree. Everybody has different ratios of different muscle fibers and that can play a big role in what rep range and thus amount of weight used is optimal for best results. There are 2 types of muscular growth that typically occur when resistance training takes place. Sarcoplasmic which is what is mostly stimulated with a moderate to high rep range typically done with a lighter or more moderate weight. This is where the muscle cells are filled up with fluid and over time can hold more fluid. This is the quickest and most noticeable way to put size on in a very short time, especially when one has not trained or been training. Also why systems like german volume training got the attention they did.

However sarcoplasmic training can only get you so far, myofibrillar training is what actually causes actual muscle fiber growth. This is usually achieved in lower rep ranges 4-6 etc.

Now each type of training does still stimulate the other growth pathway just to a much less degree. With bodybuilding you tend to see rep ranges most commonly between 6-12 reps for the reason that it keeps the muscle cell full to a great extent which gives you that bodybuilder look while still creating the muscular size that you see achieved from those in sports geared towards strength or power. Such as powerlifting or Olympic lifting.

But to be honest you can walk into any gym and see guys who hit every benchpress flat, incline, decline 225 for 3-4 sets 10-12 reps, ton of volume and look ok but not crazy big or anything. But see a guy who bench presses 495 for 3 sets of 10 reps and that's all he does for chest besides maybe flys and is big and thick as fuck. From what I have seen no comparison in my personal experience.

Hope this helps and I apologize to everybody for the overly long response for those who don't like to read a lot. Wish you a quick recovery brother and just eat good take it slow and easy and eat some extra flinstone vitamins.

I took you out of troll status for taking your bumps and bruises and being a man. Told you to start being productive and you have. So keep doing it and get into the positive karma range. No harmful or incorrect advice. Use common sense. Also no arguing. I'm getting sick of the arguing on good posts gumming it all up making the place look like shit and this just isn't you either. So go be a productive member and be part of the solution or part of the problem.

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

I dont mind long responses and i am glad you posted this because i do not interact as heavily as i used to on the board.

You have written more or less the same as i would have done so thanks for that.... good and solid info +3

Well I am almost 52 and have been around the block in my time. I have a saying and stick by it and that is SMART LIFTING IS THE KEY TO LONGEVITY bro.. Its how you work a feel the muscle working with each and every rep, the weight is irrelevant IMO but some may not agree. That's my 2 cents and good luck..
