Help pop in hamstring
ad
Squatting this morning felt/heard a pop in my left hamstring. Not even a heavy set(405)! Think I should go to the dr or wait and see how it feels in a day or two. Mild pain now, but more of bizarre feeling right where I felt the pop. Never blew out a hamstring before so am not sure what I've done! Anyone who's had hamstring difficulties before help me?

My best guess is the pop was your muscle seperating from the bone.(tendinitis) I have had tendinitis in my shoulder from high school baseball. It doesn't bother me now but I'm not throwing 100 pitches at 90mph anymore. It doesn't bother me working out either. The most painful part about tendinitis is when you first get it. If it is tendinitis then I suggest you get some alflutop. It repairs tendons.
Is alflutop an over the counter product. I'm still not sure what I did, it feels quite a bit better today. +1for the great advise and thanks for your input! Fr sent
Can you run? Ive never felt that pop however about 2 weeks ago I was squatting like 600lbs and when I went down and was coming back up I could feel the muscle fibers ripping, it kind of hurt my left hip luckily that was the last of my squat routine which had me working out at my max weight for sets at week 16.
If you can run sprinting its not your hammy.
Thanks for your advise. A guy I work with used to play ball and he told me if I had torn a hamstring I would be crawling not walking. Not sure what I've done, sore and tight but I guess I panicked. Wow 600 squat impressive! Fr sent
Don't lie... You were crackin on your honeymoon night and pulled your hamstring ;)
I wonder if running that 10k had something to do with what happened. Haven't been running at all this year, so could be. I can just imagine what would have to be going on pulling a hamstring having sex!
LaTTTimer99This has happened to me, twice. Unfortunately the only real way to diagnose what happened with any certainty is an MRI - and if you don't have insurance, they cost upwards of $1,600 and that's with a cash discount. Ranges too depending on the Hospital you select. Some charge $2-3K.
Before you worry, I will tell you this - I have torn things many times. If you do have a tear that's almost near your inner quad head (the most interior piece of the quad almost backs up on the side above your knee near the outer end of your quad), that's what I tore once when squatting. BUT, the other time, the actual pop noise was louder, and I got the MRI and had no injury. The time it didn't pop loudly, I had a partial tear on my inner quad head - 2-3 months off from training legs.
You'll usually know if there was a tear or even partial tear if some days from now you look like you've been hit by a car (enormous bruising, very dark color - from internal rupture of blood vessels. Muscle fibers are under tension like rubber bands; when they rupture, the go flying and can damage the blood vessels they hit). Pain on these is not bad - it usually looks far worse than it is - it's just an irritation because you now may have to take time off of training legs.
My suggestion would be go to the ER for an MRI IF you have Insurance.
Good luck.

Lucky and unlucky for me, universal Heath care in Canada. Lucky it's free, unlucky I would have to wait 6 months to get one! Don't think it's a tear, can walk no bruising. Not sure what happened. Just a little swollen and sore. I'll give it a day or 2 see what happens. Thanks for your insight. Fr sent
TTT is spot on. The only thing I'd add to his advice is this: if you're able to flex your knee by pulling your heel to your butt without assistance then you do NOT have a full thickness tear. He's also right about the bruising. It can be massive but it doesn't equate to a torn hammy necessarily. Give it a day or two and play by ear. You may need that MRI. Regardless of the diagnosis, you're better off being done with legs for a while. Stay healthy my friend.
Good advise. Can pull my heel up with just a little discomfort so think I'm ok! Fr sent
I have done this more then once. Nothing the doctor will do except tell you to use the R.I.C.E technique and take anti-inflammatory. The light stretching as the healing permits. In the future if you are not stretching before squatting I suggest you add it in it will go a long way in prevention. I hope you heal quickly.
Great advise Pank! I'm so fucking lazy, never stretch at all, but learned a valuable lesson. Better warmup and stretch before training anything is just smart. A couple of super light sets is not enough!
LaTTTimer99Just remember: stretching helps you get bigger. Hate to say it, but that's the real reason I make myself stretch ;)
i also like foam rolling my hamstrings before doing any legs
I'm also giving a +1 for that advise. Gonna call and set up a massage ASAP. Never done foam rolling but will investigate. Getting old sucks (55 next month) have to start doing more preventative work if I want to keep this up. Maybe less weight but I know myself and I can't not pile it on and let the young pups gawk plus nothing like the endorphin rush of a balls to the walls heavy set!
I have never done that but if it is like the deep tissue massage principle than that is an awesome idea. Stretching those knots, I am going to implement that +2 for the advice!
ice, compress and elevate it. i tore mine awhile back got a nice pic of it on here. shit sucks
Oh by the way fr sent
try stretching it over the next few days
A buddy of mine was racing his son,He was ahead of his son and looked back. When he looked back he hit a dip in his yard and both his hamstrings popped.I can't remember if he said he heard it or not.He went to the doctor and he had pulled both his hamstrings. They ended up bruising pretty good.He could barely walk.
