I so want to bust the guys bubble and correct him but i keep hearing my wife telling me to mind my business. no wonder hes doing because he is fkn cheating. people crack me up

TED's picture

i know i get stared at for not touching my chest when i bench. had some kid half my size tell me id get a better workout touching my chest. didnt say a word. just kinda rolled my sleeve up showed him my massive scar from surgery and he kinda just walked away. now with squatting i agree atleast parallel but certain exercised some people may have legitimate excuses as to why they cant do the proper lift

Catalyst's picture

If you're a weightlifter, the weight matters. If you're a bodybuilder, who gives a shit how much you can lift. More weight = more injuries.

There's always somebody stronger......

Dextermorganlv's picture

Great point man, I see bad form all the time (I've been guilty of it too). Form and function is way more important than the number on the dumbbell

wheels's picture

I'm not strong enough to do this, but one of my buddy's handles these assholes by approaching the guy just as he finishes and asks him to just leave all the plates on the bar. Then he adds one more plate to each side and pounds out reps atg before the idiot has time to move away.

It's hilarious to watch the 1/4 rep guy get a sick look on his face and slink away. Any onlookers just looks awe struck.

Does that make him an ass? Nah, just a leader by example.

PIN_CUSHION's picture

Ass? No.
Bad Ass? Yes. lol

wheels's picture

You nailed it. This guy is only 21, 100% natural. DC'd from Marine Corps recently after a 7 month tour in Afghanistan. He was the Squad Leader and carried an M240 machine gun and all ammo into the field by himself--is supposed to be a two man team. Fully loaded for patrol he weighed in at 380 lb.

He is one bad ass SOB. I'm 58, but not at all ashamed to say I look up to this 21 year old.

PIN_CUSHION's picture

WOW. Sounds like a great individual.

Gixxerboy07's picture

I was starting to feel like I was missing out on some new muscle building break-thru at my gym. I bet 60% of people there are on this half rep shit. What's the point????The other 35% are clues at what they are doin period. Nothing gets under my skin more than waiting for a bench or squat rack while I have to watch some idiot do something half-assed or totally incorrect. Or hell, maybe I fall into the 95% hahahahaha.

Harley1969's picture

Yeah bro even the trainers at my gym to the 1/4 rep bs, then post it on face book. I don't get it.

mwagner630's picture

ha my wife mwagsgurly, had a little moment with this guy at the gym over squatting. he made a comment about how much weight she was squatting (225lbs) and said something along the lines that he could do more, she said lets do it, 10 reps each, and you have to do it right or they dont count. (ass to grass or break parallel) so they put 135lbs on and that ass hat couldnt do 5 with proper form breaking parallel. she did it 28 times, racked it and said, i quit, you already look stupid enough LOL

rolltide3's picture

Lmfao let me guess he walked out never to be heard from again prolly went to one of them spa type gyms lol

mwagner630's picture

he is still around. he dont say much though. he suddenly started wearing a knee brace on leg day but i nevver see him wear before or for anything else, like when he is running, playing basket ball or doing leg press.

rolltide3's picture

Lol wait till one day he's not wearing it and have your wife challenge him again tell him he can have a ten rep lead or he can use 25s and not 45s lol

Makwa's picture

I have yet to see anybody in my gym use any proper form. Benching, curls, squats, whatever. They think they are pretty cool though thinking they can lift alot of weight. To bad it is not making them grow. I just shake my head and chuckle. They look the same year in and year out, a bunch of dancing chickens struggling to throw weight around with no form or control. Some start to get it and ask me how I keep getting bigger. I tell them to take half of that weight off of the bar and do slow controlled reps. Then I get looked at like I am crazy and they go back to their same old dancing chicken routine.

PIN_CUSHION's picture

You are very wise. That's why I like working out at home. I don't worry about how much weight is on the bar. Yes I push myself, but I really concentrate on the negative, because I literally feel the fibers breaking down. The contraction doesn't feel the same, maybe a hard squeeze for the pump, but I wouldn't trade it for the negative.

Makwa's picture

I'm getting to old to lift real heavy anymore. The joints can't take it, so I really concentrate on slow controlled reps and a full range of motion. Everyone always ask me what is my "max". I tell them I have no clue, I lift to build my muscles not my ego.

I do enjoy watching alot of these boneheads lift though, it helps pass the time in between sets listing everything in my mind they are doing wrong.

rolltide3's picture

Theres a guy at my gym people are always he's a beast he will get on the leg press load it up with plates and move like six inches lol it looks like he's hitting his calves I just shake my head. Iv wanted to go over and push it down on him and say move it now and sit there a second watch him not budge it then say see dipshit u aren't that strong lol

IrishMack's picture

The other day there were 2 guys on the leg press doing the same thing. After they got off I went over to do my set. They were taking tje weight off I told them no and went ALL the way down and pushed it up, did it 5 times @650 pounds. funny how noone said anything when I do it the RIGHT way. They call me Mini T Rex.

rolltide3's picture

Cracks me up I move it that much when I hit calves on it everyone stops and watches like wow I only go up to eight plates on each side but I go all the way down till it stops then back up but by the time I get there my legs are kinda fatigued after squatting

HllwdBdBoy's picture

I've been done trying to help ppl at the gym for years now (unless they ask)

I use to train with a world class kick boxer with massive shoulders, I asked him how he got shoulders like that... he answered "improper curls" LMAO!

rolltide3's picture

Lmao that's funny we got a trainer at my gym that's a total dipshit every time he preacher curls he puts 45 on each side but stands up each rep to move the weight back and forth lol

IrishMack's picture

My friend calls those guys the "Back Rockers" The ones that do barbell curls with their back.
The squat and legpress cheaters are called NoAssatalls
The benchpress ones are called Bitty Committee (from grade school. The itty bitty titty committee)
He has more names but I have to see him again to remember.

rolltide3's picture

Lol great he's got a new nickname. He drives me up the wall this dude a trainer doesn't look like it and he does everything backwards like he only benches on the smith machine and there no injury. He does his shoulder work on it to. Drives me up the wall just wanna slap him and throw him a dumbell

IrishMack's picture

now I know the secret lol

j223's picture

nah let him do it. you never know maybe he was just trying to introduce a heavier weight. Sometimes that helps me. A while ago When I got stuck/plateau around 3 plates on squatting, my buddy suggested we throw 4-5 plates and do 1/3-1/2 reps just to introduce the heavy weight. It kind of shocks your muscles, even if you only go down partial your legs are not used to that heavy weight so it definitely is something your body is not used to. Then 5 or so days later I hit 4 plates and was able to go down further. It is more weight than your body is used to and sometimes people look at you like you are an idiot or lifting too much but it really does help sometimes.
Though I must add that there is a difference between someone trying to go heavy to shock their body and someone who lifts just for their ego. When this person has no spotter and has terrible form then they are likely just trying to impress and those are the guys who end up hurting themselves

IrishMack's picture

I agree because I get used to heavy that way BUT afterwards I do a set the right way even if I can only 1 or 2 at least my form is correct and I will get results. I know you can agree with that lol.

WhyNot's picture

I only mention this because you're heading into powerlifting. Powerlifters are notorious for doing quarter and half reps, maybe he's a power lifter.

IrishMack's picture

Not with his chicken legs lol. Literally close to being chickenish, If he actually squatted the weight properly you might see some feathers spring out. he has runner legs, long muscles in his quads with no definition and long calves with no definition. he wears tighties that look like pantyhose so I was looking at his legs; no homo until I saw how they reminded me of a girls legs so I looked away before the homo started. I won't take away from what he is trying to accomplish and by all means I am a humble person but shit if you're going to workout do it fkn right! I find that if I watch everyone in the gym and look at the ridiculous things they do it helps me work out longer and more sets... because I forget where I was in my sets laughing so much inside hahah

WhyNot's picture

Maybe the guy just doesn't know any better and is too intimidated to ask for help?

You could always start the conversation by asking him for help........" I've never done those that way, what are those for?" ............... see what he says.......... if he says leg development....... tell him his Hamstrings are part of his legs and he's missing out on the part........... it he is cool about it, teach him........if he's an ass....... Ask him if you can work in with him and that you want to warm-up for your leg workout. Smile

IrishMack's picture

now you kind of made me feel bad, he has a partner he works out with that encourages him. I did listen to what he was saying to one of the fanboys and I feel he would shun my advice. I see him a lot so when I do my squats Ill make sure he is around and I will make an effort to get his attention to watch how its done.

WhyNot's picture

Your good guy, don't feel bad about it.

White Bolt's picture

agree.... at least go parallel

dboler's picture

Is he doing 1/4 or 1/2 squat? 1/4 is definitely retarded but I would say 1/2 is acceptable, I can't perform ATG squats at all even at 135 lbs due to knee injury, but Im able to half squat 315 for reps no problem. And I do feel my legs and glutes get enough contraction from these half squats. Just my 2 cents.

IrishMack's picture

just about a quarter if that. he started with about 3 plates a side and STILL went less then a quarter. I was taught the proper way to squat so i can do 300 but fuck me my ass and hams give up after about 5.

aronl's picture

There's one (or more) in every gym Ive ever been in. If people are impressed then they are dumb if they dont notice he isnt going down. Just chuckle and go on your way and leave him to his false sense of accomplishment.
