Dexascan vs home scale

ad

I am sure most know this but for those who don’t. I went and did a dexascan today an hour and a half after using my home scale that’s supposed to measure bf and visceral fat and other things.

The home scale is absolute garbage by comparison. It wasn’t even close on any number. Now I didn’t think there would be any other outcome but man the numbers were vastly different.

What home scale did you use? I have the HUme one, wonder if that's pretty close

Somedude's picture

I linked it in here. It’s not hume

Hume scale is as advertised. That's what I have and compared to a DEXA. It was very close to the DEXA.

How different is the point spread would you say

Greg's picture

At best it's 2%+/- AS ADVERTISED

that said on any given day several factors can make the scale way off. Hydration, food and or water in gut, stool, etc.

The trend is more important. The "DEXA" result trend shown in the app are fairly accurate.

I.e., lean mass v fat mass, visceral fat, subQ fat, bone, all were a few percentage points off from what the DEXA showed.

If one scale says 100lbs, the second 98lbs if I loose 5lbs and the scales read 95/93 then it really doesn't matter if my goal is to lose weight, I know I've lost 5lbs and I'm heading in the right direction.

The home use multi frequency eight node bio impedance scale is fairly accurate if you follow proper guidelines. There's nothing Uber special about the Hume scale.

Weigh-in first thing in the morning after a shower.
Go to the bathroom if needed, do not eat or drink until after the Weigh-in.
Be consistent. Skip a day if you gave to.

I cant be the only one curious now. What were the actual numbers from each?

Do you mind sharing what home scale you have? I have the Renpho body composition scale. I do use it like the numbers are off but look at the "trend". Water up, water down, fat% up or down etc.

To be fair, that is a single frequency 4-electrode system that sends a signal up one leg and down the other. It measures water outside your cells.

A dual frequency 8-electrode system has a hand held device, that measures the whole body and water within and outside the cells.

The latter can be within 2% of a DEXA scan. And yes, I've tested mine against a DEXA scan and it was as advertised.

That said, it can be off by a lot on some days (hydration, fiber in the gut, chyme, stool, etc..)

You're looking for trends when using these scales, not daily results.

Somedude's picture

Yeah that’s fair and that’s how I was using my scale. I wanted actual numbers so I got the dexscan. I was curious how off it was.

Greg's picture

I have one of those Renpho scales as well and they are way off relatively.

Somedude's picture

The scare you have now it has the handle electrodes as well? The one you say is - 2% off from dexascan

Greg's picture

Yes.

Somedude's picture

Yeah. Daily tracking for me is for trends. I tell what food messes me up the day before and how my weight reflects it

Right I agree it shows progress. I just like know accurate information. And I didn’t know my resting metabolic rate until the dexascan. That will help me build the proper recomp diet
