+ 1 Anyone else take breaks??

ad

In regard to taking time off from lifting, anyone else program some time away? Im in my later 40s and just started taking 10 days off about 4 times a year. Seems to be working well for the tendons etc..kinda nice to mitigate the aches almost before they truly settle in.

I try to take a break, most I can do is 4 days if I'm out of town. But then I feel like a lazy bum and can't take it anymore.

Yeah man, for sure it is hard to stay away. But thats what makes the re entry so awesome!

Love to hear the same thinking from other guys. Thats what I read too, the cns needs some loving.

Ohh yeah you'll know when it happens you wake up extremely sore you feel like your barely slept and you'll get pump for like 15 min into a workout then it fades. You'll just feel extremely exhausted

Yep, that's the feeling for sure

When my CNS is shot my appetite actually disappears for a day or 2, then comes back in strong to make up for it all. I get this really jaded, brain foggy feeling that can feel like depression too - shattered all the time and just wanting to sleep. Its an awful feeling - I really don't know how these top level powerlifters deal with it all the time, tbh I've come to the conclusion that they just don't suffer from it as much as normal people do which is how they get stronger than most in the end. Even their 'light' days still use weights that would cripple most men's spines - must be bullet proof.

As others are also saying, make good use of those times where you are quite ill - ill enough to justify no training anyway. Earlier this year when I had Bronchitis for 6 weeks my shoulders literally regenerated themselves back to new - it was amazing the first few times I benched again and there was no niggles absolutely anywhere, felt like I was gonna hit 500 no probs!!!! LMFAO ...... Until I didn't and it just bombed on a weight I use to get before becoming ill no problem LOL

Yep, that is smart, and sad lol. I know that feeling all to well!

I’ll have two weeks of “fuck it’s” and somehow hit close to a PR when I come back. The body is weird but sometimes rest is best.

Seems to be the consensus a little time off does the hard hitters good.

This is something I am going to start doing more also, it was hard enough to regenerate and heal tendons fully already in my late 30's, now at 45 its taking forever!! The worst part is it only gets worse as you get older. I really feel it in the top of my bicep where it inserts under the shoulder cap from benching and chins, and also rotator cuffs in general. Just literally had to take about 10 days away from heavy benching because the long head of my bicep tendon was getting really sore when getting heavy - felt like it could just snap at any moment. Problem is as I am sure you may know - tendons lose their elasticity and ability to regenerate as we age - they become drier and more rigid/lose their collagen content and ability to recover as quick, stretching out the already long enough time difference between muscle and tendon recuperation. Anyway I'm waffling (like Waffle house LMAO) best way to allow them to heal is simply to rest them and take time off. I have found many times that after leaving an exercise for 10 days to 2 weeks, when I come to do it again I am much stronger due to super compensation setting in where you recover over and above what you normally do in a normal training routine. BUT that Bitch always sits nagging in the back of your mind about how much strength and muscle 'you may' have lost in the meantime from not training it routinely as normal LOL

Too funny, too true as well
My elbows just started ragging me and the forearms as well
Started pull-upsa few months ago for the first time since my weight loss, and man they're killing me. But I told myself its because im not Stretching my triceps enough lol, not age.

Feels smart kinda, me like

Mick3333's picture

Yeah, I do the deload deal every 5 or 6 weeks but its not the same feeling as staying out of the gym and not lifting anything for a bit. But then again maybe its my age. Im not ancient, but 46, so maybe just me getting older. I definitely never felt this way before I will say that.
