+ 14 How To Treat Acne - My Protocol (Updated)
From having a look around, I can see there are a number of threads on here already about acne and how everyone treats it, but as someone who has been unfortunate enough to experience very bad acne sides, I'd like to share with you the reason why I think it happens, what the normal treatments are, what I done to get rid of it, and how it all works.
What Causes Acne?
Although there are multiple contributing factors, I believe that AAS-related acne occurs when excess oil (Sebum) is produced by the sebaceous gland at the root of the hair follicle. The Sebum is responsible for carrying dead skin cells through the follicle to the surface of the skin. However, testosterone and other androgens significantly increase Sebum production which leads to blockage and infection.
What Are The Treatments?
Usually a doctor or dermatologist will prescribe some sort of cleanser, or a topical or oral antibiotic.
I personally had some success with topical treatments. One in particular, Duac, done a pretty good job at getting rid of the acne that was there already, but unfortunately didn't do much in the way of preventing it.
In the most extreme cases of acne, a drug called Accutane can be prescribed. There are a few sources on here stock it, but beware, it's not to be toyed with. The only reason I mention it is to warn you to steer well clear - the potential sides are very severe and a very real possibility.
What I Recommend
After trying several diet changes, prescription medicines and soaps, the following is what I've found works best for me. Everyone is different, but there is real science behind this protocol, so I'm sure that at the very least you will see a reasonable improvement! Before I started this regime, nothing I tried seemed to prevent the acne from occurring, nor get rid of it once it was there.
1. Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
First up is Vitamin B5, also known as Pantothenic Acid. Amongst its many other benefits, Vitamin B5 is a major part of Co-Enzyme A which is used for fatty acid oxidation at cellular level. A CoA deficiency slows the oxidisation of fatty acids which results in the skin becoming more oily, leading to acne. Supplementing with large amounts of B5 increases the amount of CoA available. The more CoA available, the more fatty acids can be metabolised, meaning they're oxidized or burned as energy.
The study bellow shows that Dr Leung gave his patients 5-10 grams of Pantothenic Acid per day, both of which showed positive results. I've used and would recommend starting at a lower dose of 3-5 grams per day while adding in L-Carnitine (see no.2 bellow).

An interesting side note regarding B5 and CoA; a Vitamin B5 deficiency can result in adrenal failure, meaning an inability to synthesise steroidal hormones, like Cortisol.

2. L-Carnitine
I include L-Carnitine here simply because it allows for the Vitamin B5 dose to be lowered to a much more comfortable number.
According to the biochemisty of fatty acid oxidation, "Transport is RATE LIMITING STEP for oxidation of long chain fatty acids." (From USD Biochemisty Lecture)
"Carnitine transports long-chain acyl groups from fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix, so that they can be broken down through ß-oxidation to acetate to obtain usable energy via the citric acid cycle." (Quoted from Wikipedia).
I obtained the desired results from 750mg L-Carnitine per day. An added benefit of the combo is smaller pore size and smoother skin.
3. Zinc
From my research, the way in which Zinc works for acne seems unclear, but it's believed that it likely heals acne by carrying vitamin A to the skin and regulating the body's hormonal balance.
Source: Cellular zinc fluxes and the regulation of apoptosis/gene-directed cell death
Quote from Clear Skin Forever: "a recent study found that zinc facilitates apoptosis, or pre-programmed cell death, which is a natural part of your skin renewing itself. If apoptosis is delayed, as in the case of zinc deficiency, skin cells stick together instead of dying and sloughing off like they should, which leads to clogged pores. (Interesting fact: isotretinoin, the active ingredient in Accutane, also uses this mechanism of cell apoptosis to treat acne"
Zinc Picolinate is believed to be the most easily absorbed form of Zinc. I recommend 50mg daily, split into two doses.
Other Recommendations
Besides the above protocol, I've found these to be extremely effective as well.
1. Tanning
Anyone who's had trouble with acne and used sunbeds will tell you how much of a difference tanning has made to their skin! As a teenager and into my early twenties, I had some trouble with my skin, nothing too drastic but always an issue for a number of years, until I started tanning that is. No need to go overboard, once or twice a week works wonders. Just make sure to use a decent moisturiser, something with Hyaluronic Acid in it. A light moisturiser or serum works best. I recommend THESE PRODUCTS - the ingredients they use are top notch - I've never seen anyone able to offer what they can at those prices!
2. African Black Soap
A lot of people, myself included, have had great results with African black soap. As well being able to clear acne up on its own, it's known to be effective at treating other skin conditions due to its healing properties. I'd recommend buying a product that has added natural Shea Butter and Aloe such as THIS. The soap is quite drying, so make sure you have a decent moisturiser on hand as mentioned above.
Other Proven Treatments
Although I haven't had any direct experience with the following, I'm including them here due to the large number success stories of their use in treating acne, with the science to back it.
1. Chromium
Chromium supplementation on its own has been shown to be effective in treating acne, to a great extent in some cases - particularly in those who consume large amounts of sugar. Epidemiological studies suggest that low glycemic diets are protective against acne and one open label trial found that 400 mcg of chromium improves acne.
Source: McCarty M. High-chromium yeast for acne? Med Hypotheses. 1984;14:307–10.
Some anecdotal evidence shows doses of 600mcg to be effective.
2. Retinol Vitamin A
"Vitamin A acid represents the most effective therapeutic agent available for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris. This is also borne out by the results obtained in 152 patients over a two-year period. Clinical improvement is striking, long lasting remissions can be maintained by continuous treatment, and there appears to be an acceleration of the natural course to spontaneous remission of disease activity."

Hope this helps some of you as much as it has me!

everyone nowadays reaching for the top shelf with the damned accutane. Accutane is the last resort for acne. It's the atomic bomb for acne treatment. It shouldn't be your go to. acne takes time to get rid of. Accutane destroys your kidneys, liver, and skin. your cholesterol gets messed up.
Accutane goes into your dermis and DESTROYS parts of it so your body cannot produce essential oils. it takes YEARS for your skin to recover.
When I breakout this is what I use:
Wash yourself 3 times a day. get some Nuetrogena soap and a back scrubber, so you can reach your back. use the Soap with the sal acid with the tiny beads twice a day. It comes in an orange bottle. take the time to actually wash.
Use BODY CLEAR body wash from neutrogena. it has salicylic acid built in.
then use Equate Beauty Original clean Astringent twice a day on affected areas. it comes in a blue liquid. it stings like a bitch.
then before bed use Body Clear Body Spray 360 sprat from Neutrogena.
Change your diet to include coffee and natural diuretics. Cut potatoes and other starches. Cut fish oil and other omega 3's or 6's you may have in your vitamin plan. fish oil makes me break out. CLA works great for me.

Hey brotha thanks a lot for this post. Ive been struggling witj back /chest acne really bad since my last tren cycle. I've ran it a few times with no trouble but for some reason this last one destroyed my skin (diff source, first source with EO?) I read your post 2 weeka ago and have been following eeverything. B6 2500 mg 3x day, l-carnitine 250mg 3xday. Zinc 50 mg 3 x day. Tanning every 3 days.Just bought african black soap body wash today. It seems like the first few days were good butall of a sudden its worse then ever... how long doea b6 take to work? How long would the "initial breakout ▲" last? I haven't been using moisturizer , problem? Anytning else youd recomend? I juat want to thank you again for taking the time to post thia
that's too much zinc brotha. too much zinc will sink your copper levels and you'll get ill. think of zinc and copper like sodium and potassium. they are "opposites". I'm just noticing this is from 2 years ago. oops.
No problem bro. Seems you've misread the post, you should be taking B5, not B6 - B6 is actually known to aggravate acne, which would explain your adverse reaction. Drop the B6 for B5 ASAP.
A moisturiser isn't absolutely necessary, but I would definitely recommend it, especially if tanning. Keeping the skin moisturised is known to reduce Sebum production. The type of moisturiser you use is very important though; I'd suggest staying away from the bigger brands you find in supermarkets, like Olay, L’Oreal, Neutrogena and Nivia etc. Look for a more-natural light moisturiser or serum like the products I linked to in the post. If you can't order from there, you can use eBay. Hyaluronic Acid is the most important ingredient to have in your moisturiser; Retin-A / Retinol will help to prevent acne by removing dead skin cells on the surface.
Let me know how you get on!
That was a typo I actually am using b5. Ill try the moisturizer. I have a dermatologist apointment next tuesdayas well. Anything ypu reccomend asking for?
.
I've been taking zinc for a year now 25-50mg daily. It's kept my skin clear even through all my cycles. It's an amazing mineral and I would recommend it to all my friends.
Just done a little update with sources - hope people are still finding it useful!
Thanks man, I found that African Black soap on the Chinese Taobao site. Now, i just need to get a girl to order it for me.
Walgreens sells it as well
Good advice.
I have been working and living in China for quite a few years now. After two of those years, i reasoned out that i am allergic to MSG. The primary symptom is Backne. I experimented with many products and finally found Cetaphil soap. The bar soaps work great for me. In the states, you can find them at target and walmart. Where can i get the african soap?
I'm from the UK, so I'm not too sure who would have it in store. The Walmart website lists the exact one I use though; http://www.walmart.com/ip/African-Black-Soap-with-Oats-Aloe-Vitamin-E-Nu...
Thanks Man. i'm in China. Maybe I can get it off TaoBao or in Hong Kong. I'm always looking for a new, good soap.
Wow, it's great to see someone cite their sources on the 'net! Thanks for the info!
You're welcome buddy.
Anonvery good
Cheers brother
Good stuff
Thanks MM
Good post, Personally 100mg (50mg 2x a day) of Doxycycline works really well for me, although i get it super mildly, not even sure if it'd be properly classified as acne!
Thanks bud. I always try to avoid any potentially toxic drugs like antibiotics, but glad that's working for you!
AnonGreat post homie.
Thanks brother
nice post +1
I've been hearing things about megadosing vitamins, b vitamins in particular. a little skeptical but willing to try next go around.
Thanks! If you've had trouble with acne on previous cycles, you should definitely give it go. Pantothenic Acid has no known toxicity; the only known side effects seem to be diarrhoea and heartburn, although I've never experienced either.
StevebGood to know +1
+1 from me as well. I had a terrible time with acne last cycle. Keeping a closer eye on it this time. Adding this to my favorites in case I need to refer back to it. Thanks for taking the time.
Glad to have helped buddy, there's nothing worse than a major breakout on cycle, especially when it's on your face - I almost stopped mid-cycle last time.
If you're prone to acne, I'd definitely recommend starting the above either before or on the same day as your first pin!
I have the B5. I'll need to order some Zinc. I am already tanning (about every 4th day to not over-do it). I also have a significant amount of an antibiotic if shit really hits the fan the way it did last time. Ha. Also showering twice daily, Proactiv on the face both times, and moisturizing the shoulders/chest/what I can reach of my back (which is very little, unfortunately, and those applicators don't work too well for me) after my evening shower and before bed. Got a little routine of my own, but could always use more info from others' experience.
Great article.. I am sure many on here will find it useful/helpful.. I know I sure did.. Thanks!
Thanks buddy!
Very well written. +1
Thanks Royk!
I love well written articles +1
Glad you liked it!
