I'm going to say that smartphones/the internet are a double edged sword here. Sure it gave us more and easier access to information of all kinds. There were things i came across on conspiracy subreddits easily a decade before they were finally declassified and proven to be true even though people swore all along that they were stupid and impractical. Weather manipulation and mind control come to mind. But all that access to information and the doom scrolling people would do has shortened the attention span of your average person and seemingly removed a lot of the deeper thinking/conversations that used to take place a lot more frequently. I attribute that to attention span too.
It seems like most people are just looking for that quick fix, immediate gratification these days. It's kinda rare to come across someone who is planning and working towards goals that are more than just a few weeks in the future. Someone planning a huge goal in multiple steps that's going to take years to complete? Almost unheard of to your average person. Those in control have been pushing for more control over the flow of information for a while. They've had some success by manipulating search terms and the different algorithms that dictate what information gets shown to you on social media. Or just outright refusing to show the options you're obviously looking for when searching for something online. I remember right after the first trump assassination attempt you could go to google and literally type in "assassination attempt on president tru" and it would autofill in attempts on president truman. Nothing would come up in regards to what happened to trump just a day or 2 before. Or when they would throw up a message about how facts were changing quickly in regards to what you searched for so there were no trusted sources to show you currently. They've been making bigger pushes to have direct control over the flow of information online as we can't have any "mis or disinformation" out there. God forbid people read about things and make up their own mind. If we start passing laws similar to other western countries it's going to be a huge blow to freedom of speech and expression in this country.

The guy I was talking about asking me if I was armed was from Belarus. I don’t know how it is now, but a few years back evidently it was pretty fucked up. He’s Jewish too, that may have had to do something with his treatment. I always liked Putin, but he had nothing nice to say about him. I’ll be seeing that guy again sometime in the next couple months, I’ll ask him some more questions. Very friendly guy.
