+ 6 Old School vs. Bodybuilders look today

ad

I was just chatting with a member on an SI and we happen to bring up ole school bodybuilders vs new school bodybuilders. Personally I grew up looking at 90's bodybuilders. I had all the magazines, however my brothers I love that 70's era, so my preference is the way those guys looked. I try and imitate that look.

My favorite ole school look is from "The Myth" Sergio Olivia. I liked Arnold's look too. Both guys started as powerlifters.

My question to y'all is what look did you guys like....Arnold, Sergio, Frank Zane look or Ronnie Coleman, Dorian look? Or maybe one on the new school guys like Nick Walker?

PhillyMelvin_Smelvin's picture

Frank zane 100%... fuckin swole David Hasselhoff.

DeeMan's picture

Frank Zane was nice. Symmetry, aesthetics

P1nh3d's picture

100% Agree. The Golden era-look is the most aesthetically pleasing look IMO. Guys like Arnold, Mike Mentzer, Serge Nubret, Frank Zane, Danny Padilla, Boyer Coe, etc... I respect the past and current massive shredded freaks, but the older classic look is what I'm pushing for. My wife and most of her friends who like muscular dudes prefer the golden-era look to the freakishly big and shredded look.

I liked Arnold's era but I also liked Kevin Levrone's era. Both eras were legendary

Holey crap! I wrote my reply then read yours I swear I didn't plagarize. LOL Same exact opinion.

P1nh3d's picture

Great minds think alike... or is it weak minds? Either way it's all good!

DeeMan's picture

100% agree +1

JakeKO's picture

I gotta agree with you here. Seems like most of today’s bodybuilders are either way too small, or ridiculously big to the point it just looks too fake. Like they are all using Synthol. I don’t know, just my opinion.

DeeMan's picture

Yea man I just can't get into them...I mean Nick Walker? I can't bro. No disrespect to the Nick fans. Think about it though, guys like Kevin Levrone, Flex Wheeler would definitely place at top if they competed today if the judging criteria was a little different lol. Everything is about SIZE. Those guys I mentioned looked damn good...symmetry and all.

alekaras's picture

N5 back then is Mr 0 today, no condition at all..

alekaras's picture

And the one of few that he grew and cut into a show!!

DeeMan's picture

Yea Levrone definitely grew into a show. That was well known. Don't know why folks didn't believe that. After his season was over he would deflate.

alekaras's picture

I watched I video from 2002 he was sporting Shawn ray, exactly 3 months out of the show and he was small, after that they go all together for the Olympia meet up, kevin wearing the same clothes like the others the Olympia hoodie, and he was small he literally was small.. I thought it was with them just for fun he didn't look like a bb. Then boom 13 weeks later.. In all seriousness he is a hyper hyper hyper responder!!

DeeMan's picture

Yep nobody grows as fast as Kevrone. Muscle memory is a mofo

DeeMan's picture

That era man...unbelievable. Just glad I witnessed it.

alekaras's picture

You said it brother pilitics, they did the same with ronnie and flex, Dorian and Nasser, even way back Arnold and nubret..

P1nh3d's picture

Yeah, how freakish are his genetics to take 6months completely off then come back and pack on 60-80lbs in like 16-20weeks to compete! Wtf!

P1nh3d's picture

He might be the world's best gear responder! One of those suppressed myostatin anomalies.

DeeMan's picture

@Lifted-presence92 and P1nh3d I think he is the world's best gear responder. He's proven that over and over. The guy shrinks to regular joe blow status then a few months later he's top 3 Mr. Olympia. That's Levrone for ya.

DeeMan's picture

I agree 100%

alekaras's picture

That's 100% true bud he just looks at AAS and grows lol

DeeMan's picture

Just insane!

DeeMan's picture

Kevin was one of the strongest bodybuilders around that time too.

alekaras's picture

Yes sir, although I believe it was stronger in a bench general not only then, especially today no one's coming even close.

DeeMan's picture

Yessir Kevin was a true genetic freak no doubt. He's one one of my favorites too. Those damn shoulders bro! Damn! Did you see his comeback at age 50?

I kinda use his off cycle method. He came off completely. Thing is he really shrinks and loses alot of size off cycle but his muscle memory brings him right back to his old size when he gets back on cycle.

DeeMan's picture

Yep they do lie I agree. Nobody seems to be honest ya know? Lol bro I was told a long time ago that if you tell the truth you don't constantly have to remember lies and that's true my man. Yes I come off completely and follow that pct protocol that you mentioned above. Gotta be honest, I do lose some size but once I go back on I regain what I lost. Now can I be bigger cruising and using higher doses? Maybe but I'm not trying to be Mr. Olympia as I value my health more and I get decent gains.. I've done it this way so long I can't change it now lol. I feel a lil awkward cause most cruise but I'm just being honest I feel best completely coming off and yes I feel like shit but that goes away eventually. When I get back on I'm firing from all cylinders! But good question man, like I tell folks just cut through the chase and tell the truth. I've admitted to not really having experience with Tren or GH which is also awkward for a veteran but hey truth is truth right. Now with that being said I have some overall knowledge and a decent background.

P1nh3d's picture

If you check out Mocvideo productions on YouTube he's posted up Levrone's full length Full Blown DVD and the Maryland Muscle Machine DVD. If you got some time to kill its worth the watch. Truly an uncrowned Mr. O!

DeeMan's picture

You got that right...the uncrowded Mr.Olympia period. " The Maryland muscle machine".

ONESICK's picture

My dad got into body building in the 80s after he stopped wrestling. I would watch him lift but he idolized the guys from the 70s-80s. So for me growing up I would look at all his mags he had from those guys. After I started boxing in 99-2000 I kinda fell off on who was who. I still have nostailga from being a kid. I like that classic look more than anything. Then you see the Mutant and as much as he is a spectacle it's too much for me. I salute those guys.

DeeMan's picture

Yea like your dad I idolized those ole school guys. Wish I was born earlier lol. As a youngster I payed attention to all those guys, mostly 90's bodybuilders

JakeKO's picture

My thoughts exactly!!!
