To Swab or not to Swab?

ad

The question is - Is swabbing your injection site prior to intramuscular injection absolutely necessary?

I personally never thought this was a debate as I have proudly been a swabber for life. However it seems there are several medical studies that tested this very theory.

I beleive that swabbing prior is the safest & most optimal protocol. By swabbing prior one study concluded a total reduction in surface skin bacterial counts by over 82%. That being said it is the overall conclusions I found very interesting.

Here is a link to some studies I referenced that I felt the community would apperciate.

I once got an infection from water based winstrol, which brought me to the hospital for 3 weeks and made my quad look awful. Since this day I've become paranoid. Never pinning in the quad again and for other muscles I use antiseptic spray, swab, spray, swab, spray.

Knowing that it is not necessary it's my head always remembering about that experience in the hospital nearly dying from fever and getting your leg sliced.

I know that it is from the gear as I always took the cleaning serious but it is still in my head.

I saw a friend of mine injecting right through his jeans, not giving a damn. Until today nothing ever happened to him.. but in my opinion that's reckless and stupid.

Swab your injection sites and don't risk anything. We already do enough unhealthy and risky things..

To late. I'm like a trained athlete swab vile, swab injection site, pin, aspirate, inject, remove and swab. It's all in the muscle memory couldn't change if I wanted to.

Nurse at my GP told me when I was “proving” to them that I could safely self-administer my TRT shot that it was not necessary. It’s the only time in my life I have ever not swabbed. And then same health service (NHS) scrub your arm with isopropyl alcohol on a hard sponge thing for 30 seconds before letting it dry and inserting that big old 18g when donating blood. Go figure!

I stopped swabbing a while ago.

I also stopped wearing my seat belt, looking both ways before crossing the street, wearing condoms with random girls, chewing my food when eating, and now i always eat inside of 30 minutes before swimming.

In all seriousness, assuming the liquid inside of the vial is still sterile (which means every needle pressed into it before was sterile), the needle being injected is sterile at the point it pierces the skin, and there is no bacteria on the skin when the needle pierces the skin, theoretically i can see how it can be considered an ‘unnecessary extra step’.

However with that logic, as long as you drive safely you don’t need a seatbelt, and you don’t need to look both ways if you don’t hear any cars coming.

I use an isopropyl wipe on my site and on the vial, and then after removing the needle, i put a dab of Neosporin on the injection pin hole. It almost makes a small seal that keeps blood in. Stick a bandaid over that boi and you’re good to go.

Just two things, earbuds and Chevy Volt

It’s just a part of the ritual at this point, whether it’s an absolute requirement or not. I love the smell of isopropyl alcohol as much as I love the smell of black coffee by now. Both perk me right up. Guaiacol is an arousing scent, as well. They should make cologne out of that stuff, fr. Smells like concentrated sex, I swear

Technically the answer should be yes from everyone because it is the right way to do it. Have I ever personally done it over all these years? No. Do I plan on starting? No.

I personally do not anymore, however I only inject after I have recently showered and of course I scrub my hands prior.

I work with a diabetic. He has to inject right before every meal. I watched him inject right through his shirt. I asked him if he ever got infected and he said he has been doing that for 30 years. No swabbing or removing clothing just straight through. I have forgotten to swab my pin sites more than a few times and never an infection. One time I was very meticulous I got a sterile absess. Now I just make sure the vial is clean and no swabbing. 4 months now and I'm still alive.

Obviously the answer is to keep swabbing! Why take a chance. BE SAFE! Anyway the swabs are so inexpensive!

For the price of cotton ball or alcohol pad I'll continue to swab. Piece of mind is priceless.

Precautions is rule number one is our game, taking no chances here, swabbing everything I can get hold of
Been successful so far

Swap before, wait for it to dry. I see no reason not to, even if the risk is 1% if you’re doing ed injections for 12 weeks that’s 84 injections..

RN here, swab your sites, gentleman

I swab before and after and then put a tiny bandaid on the injection site.
