+ 6 Exercise induced gh and testosterone production does not play a role in muscle growth, cortisol does....what??

So back when we were all natty I'm sure most of you heard smashing legs caused huge release in endogenous gh and testosterone production. These two studies found that natural testosterone and gh played no role in muscle growth, the big increases after workout sessions did not influnence the rate of protein synthesis. In one 12 week study they found no relationship between the athletes test and gh levels and the muscle they gained, What they did find was cortisol was responsible for muscle growth. Even they said it, we think of cortisol doing the opposite, breaking down muscle, but not according to this study. What's your guys thoughts.

The problem I see here is no mention of diet. Were they actually in a cal surplus to provide the building blocks needed to build the tissue. Pump all the test and GH into you and if you are aren't eating enough you will not grow. We all know bumps in test and GH elicit an anabolic response, whether endogenous or exogenous. You have set the stage for growth with those pulses so feed the body properly and it will now grow. Don't feed it and you are wasting those pulses. Without any mention of the whether these subjects had their diet controlled, I'll be binning that study and sticking with what I know. Do what ever you can to increase test and GH, eat plenty and you WILL grow.

Ya Its really hard for me to ever truly take a exercise related study to heart because i know that diet is the number 1 factor and theres noway in hell theyre following these 56 test subjects around all day long making sure theyre all eating the same exact thing at the same times in the correct quanties for their bodyweight, or even if they asked them to follow any type of strict diet. But what is interesting about this study is the fact they said the muscle they gained was due to cortisol release,

Honestly, its hard to believe "studies" anymore. So many are thrown out and repeatedly seem to contradict other studies, and/or unverified long believed truths. John Oliver did an entertaining piece regarding studies amd how they are done and reported on. Not implying his skit is factual either, but it sure does support the trend.

I tend to believe the original theory regarding gh and testosterone inhibited by exercise and its significance, but Im no scientist either. I guess the short answer is I dont know what to believe outside personal experience. Personal experience tells me, squats and deadlifts help me grow.

I agree with you, I suffered a pretty severe back injury about 3 years ago and had to give up squats and deads and I literally just said to my wife yesterday I think I really stopped growing when I stopped doing squats and deads. Obviously not completely but my legs definitely don't grow as fast as they did when I was starting my workout with back squats, and luckily I have great back genetics so it still grows faster then everything else without even doing deads but back when I was doing them it just seems like everything grew faster. Nothing to do with natural release of hormones since I'm on gear but they're just great exercises for building muscle fast. Wish I could still do them. Maybe some day.

Absolutely. I havent had a serious injury, but the years of football did take its toll. I still force myself to squat and dead lightly, but always sustain an injury when I go too far....real growth just doesnt happen without them. WHether its from cortisol, or gh/test I dont know....I do know that injecting yourself with more testosterone and GH WILL help you grow muscle. Ive never injected cortisol, maybe that shit is the next big thing.

I haven't taken the time yet to read through the actual studies it was based on. I want to read the actual methods in which the studies were carried out. One down side that I have already seen is, the duration of the study, 12 weeks. based on legitimate peer reviewed research ive read it requires a MINUMUM of 8 weeks before your body will actually begin to build muscle. If this is true then that would provide only 4 weeks maximum of muscle stimulation that could initiate actual protein synthesis leading to the development of skeletal muscle.

I will agree that it is difficult to sift through research and decipher fact from fiction. There are often contradictory studies that are published. I think that's why its important to keep an open mind and reach your own opinion based on your knowledge and understanding of research. It's also important to not eliminate the possibility of something due to it not being proven yet. Consider our view of so many scientific topics that have completely changed over only 20 years.

The first study has whopping 16 participants, 8 male and 8 female. And I should mention ... there are no controls. Lol. Incredible how some websites attempt to extrapolate what they do from some of these "studies".

The second study is a cohort of 56 young men, appears to be sound in methods and analysis. Albeit I looked over it only briefly. However, it being 5 years old - I would assume if this was any groundbreaking news in the world of Applied physiology, that it would have been made bigger news than it is. Being 5 years old and just surfacing. I certainly haven't heard of cortisol playing any primary role in muscle growth. And in medicine it is still common knowledge to be quite the opposite. Definitely something to read more into.
