Old school gym's vs today's gym's

ad

I know back when I was in my 20s I always loved the feel of the Mom and Pop gyms where all the equipment was old school padding on the benches and preacher curl had duck tape from all the wear and tear . There was just something about those gyms made you work out harder more focused nowadays most gyms are meat markets or just a hang out spot there are still good gyms out there but hard to find what's everyone opinion do you agree or do you like the newer gyms ???

Every gym I've been to has a cardio deck these days. There is one exception that I have seen (in my city) and thats a very old school hardcore gym that I visited. This gym is truly hard core. It even has a big sign on the wall that says "shut up and lift", lol. There are some seriously huge dudes there. The problem with this gym is the monthly price is sky high and there equipment needs some serious upgrading. It's also very dirty and the air is thick with dust. Not too many chicks at that gym, and if there are, beware! Her monster of a boyfriend might be lurking nearby, lol

t-bol's picture

I joined one of these modern gyms it has threadmills which shock absorbing feature TV in front with ipod dock, what was the result? 30 min more cardio per session as i was less tired and less bored, which led to easier cutting cycles, that is my two cents
plus there are hit chicks!

workoutman's picture

Well unfortunately today I got the news I was dreading :( The once glorious gym I joined years ago (was golds at first) is becomming more and more geared to the likes of Planet Fitness. I just heard today that they are taking even more equipment out that the bigger guys like me use. The goal is to get the 'muscle heads" out. I saw this coming because of the ever so subtle changes but it's now official. It's sad because some guys have been going there for 20+ years, and now they as well as myself are looking else where to assault the weights.

workoutman's picture

Yeah my gym is starting to suck. It use to be Golds Gym now it's changed hands a few times. Lot's of good equipment is gone, and they took out all the heavy dumb bells. The heaviest is now 100pds. What really pisses me off is that the attendant said something to me last week because I was making to much noise while I was deadlifting. Try deadlifting 300+ plus pounds for sets of 8 and not make noise, ain't gonna happen!! Place is becomming a social club, and a pansy ass fitness club. Dont get me wrong the eye candy's nice, but I'm there to pound weights, not to socialize and hit on chicks. It's sad because the place use to be the best gym in the city, but now I'm thinking about Worlds Gym.

t-bol's picture

bro exact same thing happened to me while i was doing the farmer walk with kettlebells round the gym!

tzelukie's picture

I live in Florida, my main gym is an old airplane hanger, no ac, basic equipment, and a shit load of weight. It's perfect. I have gyms all over the place as i travel alot for work but the old one is by far the best...

Origi09's picture

I plan on getting membership at metro flex although joining will cost more than my regular gym which is about 10$ a month.

redmenace117's picture

In my gym the weights are upstairs so when you drop them, sounds like the building is gonna fall down. People hate when you drop the weights cause of the noise. I drop them sometimes.. and other times.. I throw them.

Peacockin's picture

The other thing with lifting not on ground level is your not going to have a solid foundation to lift...meaning the floor is gonna flex no matter how well built it is...I just can't wrap my mind around that. I went to a newer gym with a buddy the other day, and they had all the leg equipment on the second level. That told 2 things, that the gym was firstly just for making money, and the owner has no fucking idea about lifting...so stupid.

Peacockin's picture

Why would you put a weight room upstairs, that just ludicrous. Bahaha

Champion Of The Mind's picture

I thought the samething lol +2

redmenace117's picture

It's how I solved the problem of weight dropping decades ago, but they did not listen. Instead they would rather people walk in and see Cardio machines to be more friendly.

Champion Of The Mind's picture

the problem of weight dropping

Weight dropping isn't the problem lol... it's the people around you that isn't as intense as you are... Like I tell the staff at commercial gyms, "I will not injury myself, because you don't want me to drop weights" once my set is done, I'm done, drained.. I go to failure and beyond, I literally have no more energy left to lower the weight to the floor, my arms are shaking like crazy, I literally have no more strength even to hold them, so I let them "fly".. fuck those weights lol... watch my youtube videos and you'll see..

redmenace117's picture

I completely agree with you, I usually end most of everything I do with drop sets, you know where your energy and pain is at the end of them, you ain't placing the weights down gently. mine fall.

I can't stand that gym thankfully I am a gold member and I can attend another gym in the area where all the weights are in a basement and it's slightly harder core group there. Still not like what I want.

I went to a gym on vacation once, and when i walked in people were going hard!!! Slamming weights, Chalk was all over the place, a punching bag with an area people wrote motivation quotes, NOT like we need em but it was interesting, this place had everything and more than enough weight that you would need. I miss that place. it's a vacation spot in my heart now...
wish i had a place like that around here...
But then again F-it let's lift like that at our places!

Peacockin's picture

If you can lower the weight slowly at the end of your workout your probably doing it wrong..lol

Champion Of The Mind's picture

I hear ya brah, I love my gym... BEAST MODE!! Hard core gyms are the best +2

Here's a look at my gym brah,

I love my gym, it's old school cool, hasn't changed since 1981, same location, posters of the Oak still on walls along with sexy women. They got machines in there you can't even find in the chain sweat shops of today. I tried a few newer gyms in my area and they sucked, the ppl working there and the members(most are their to socialize) or think it's a popularity contest, geez get real. Old school gyms rule. Happy hunting!

old school gyms-people went there to workout, bullshit a little between sets but not to the point where it interfered with the workout, maybe some of the info/advice is "bro" but when it comes from a guy repping 405 on bench, ripped 230lbs...yeah

todays gyms- people go to take instagram pics, text, hog my fucking squat rack for an hour doing god knows what with their fucking phone, chalk and sweat elicit the same reaction from people that seeing a lion in front of you would. oh and the music....the fucking music...........

i go to worlds, and while they have their rules list, if you're "one of the guys" i guess would be a way to put it (big, strong, the trainers know who they are if you happen to be there when a few of your buddies aren't ) you can do things other people wouldn't. Personally i think its kinda stupid, i mean if you're gonna make rules and make exceptions, make it fair for everyone because i promise you the trainers aren't saying "I'm gonna let this guy use chalk cause he's big so maybe it'll inspire other people to get big like that and then they can use it" kinda thing.

so yeah in general commercial gyms blow but once in awhile you'll find a pretty good one managed by a guy that knows the ropes, they have "rules" written but no one follows them, usually with no problems, you got a different set of members that actually get shit done depending when you go....so, I'm cool with that, lets me do what i gotta do

very well put Bro and you nailed it right on the head!!

Old school straight dungeon gym! When I first joined 10 years ago the rule no women allowed which still stands to this day bothered me at first given i was in my twenties but after a while it didn't bother me. Honestly how many of us actually acknowledge other people in the gym besides your training partner. Total tunnel vision for me. Golds opened a gym up around me so me and my partner go to check it out. Back day so we need chalk for rack pulls and barbell rows. We got asked to leave a GOLDS for using chalk!!!! WTF is this shit. Old school loud music rusty mismatched plates allowed to yell because im powering through my last rep mothafuckin gyms!

Kila's picture

Well I work out a commercial gym because its 2 minutes from my place of work.

The gym has more plates (including bumper plates for deadlifting) then I have ever seen (both in kgs and lbs) and they allow you to drop them on the floor etc.

The only thing they have banned is not wearing shoes for squats and DL. Which now means I have to take 3 pairs of shoes on gym day.

Its the only commercial gym where the PTs have all the girls/mums types in the squat rack or deadlifting from the floor as an intro to 'losing weight'

I think commercial gyms are defined by the PTs that work in them rather then the equipment.

Champion Of The Mind's picture

I can't stand commercial gyms. Everything about them is uncomfortable to me. I go to the gym to express myself, and when people are telling you, you're not allowed to deadlift or grunt, there oppressing you like the outside world. I don't know about you, but it pisses me off when people try to tell me how to live or act. I think one of the biggest triggers that set me off, is when people tell me how to do an exercise. It'll makes me feel like a volcano of pissed off just exploded in the back of my mind. I've gotten to the point now, where I tell them I've been doing this long enough and don't need anybodys help; I listen to my body. I want to hear the weights slam, I want to hear the clank of the steel; it's mandatory to cuss, I'll spit on the fucking floor, it's a floor; are you gonna eat off of it? WD-40 smells great first thing in the morning, hand me my wraps, belt and chalk, it's time to go to war.

Dickkhead's picture

No. No. No, bro. I love the aseptic environment of a high end country club fitness center. You can almost smell the isopropyl alcohol in the air with a whiff of surgical betadine scrub. Cleaner than the operating theater in any hospital. Powerfully illuminated with perfect air conditioned temperature and humidity and electrostatic air filtration as well to move even the smallest particle of dust. The reception desk rivals that of a Ritz Carlton hotel. High end equipment. Weights and chains and bands that have never been used. Power cages where no one has ever done a squat or a rack pull. Dumbbells that go up to 200 that have never been moved since they were placed there. Rows of Hammer Strength machines that no one has ever sat in. Gleaming without so much as a finger print. The gym of dreams - sauna - steam bath - whirlpool. And I - I am the only one training.

vhman's picture

I knew I liked you for some reason! ;-)

When I travel, I visit other gyms and I just went to the exact gym you just described and it was heaven!

Dickkhead's picture

When I go to these pristine gyms, I always work out in surgical scrubs. Don't you?

vhman's picture

Yes, after a full body betadine scrub. Standard procedure.

Champion Of The Mind's picture

LOL We all have our own sanctuary brother; I enjoy the hardcore facility myself.. Biggrin

Champion Of The Mind's picture

There's no school like old school, and I'm the fucking headmaster.

vhman's picture

I have to agree with you generally. I've worked out in some "old school" gyms and loved it, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. That being said, I've been in some old gyms that suck, simply because they were old, broken, dirty, etc. I've been in new gyms that suck because of the idiots there.
I now work out in a very nice athletic club and I love it. Beautiful place to be in and everyone there is working out and focus. It really just depends on the people in my opinion.

vhman's picture

I agree. I've worked out at this kind of crappy gym, but I loved it there because of the people. It wasn't broke down, but it was old and nothing fancy at all. The locker-room was super sketchy as well.
I'm just glad I have a place to drag my old body to and that I love going to.

vhman's picture

I plan on being in good shape when I get to my sixties, but that's about twenty years away. I'll stick to being in shape in my forties!

mTor's picture

The gym that I go to now is an old garage turned into a gym. They open up the bay doors so you get fresh air. Almost all free weights with the exception of like 6 machines. Old school with new equipment.

bigweight23's picture

In my twenties it was all about the free weights and I loved the feeling of working out in the old local YMCA before they tore it down. Now that im older I still hit the free weights but I've come to appreciate some of the new state of the art equipment/machines alot of the new gyms offer. Except at planet fitness that place is a joke
