+ 11 Using steroids and keeping your hair!?
Hey everyone.
I've been on finasteride (propecia) since I was about 18 (now mid 30s). I'm confident I would have been completely bald by 21 if I hadn't taken the plunge and started, yet I still have a decent head of hair. I've been thinning slowly (more so in the last few years as I started B/C) so I decided to do some research. Turns out there is a TON of varying information about all this so I wanted to make a post with some basics.
First let me explain one important thing that I thought I knew but I was wrong; there are 2 main types of steroids to worry about as far as I'm concerned:
(DHT and androgen are the bad things for your hair)
-
Ones that convert to DHT via 5-alpha-reductase enzyme (testosterones) - These can generally be countered by taking finasteride (propecia) or dutasteride. Keep in mind the "normal dose" will block most of the 5AR that you produce naturally so you would need to increase your dose as you add outside testosterone to the mix.
-
Steroids that are MADE from DHT derivatives - basically everything else. These steroids will NOT be neutralized by finasteride because the 5AR conversion process is not happening in your body as the steroid is already the "final hair wrecking product" and not the pre converted stuff that finasteride can stop. How to counter this is a little more complicated and will be explained further down.
Which steroids are ok or bad for hair? Basically all of them. Anavar, equipose(boldenone) and Tbol "might" be ok at lower doses - Please keep in mind everyone has their own reaction to these but this is more of a general consensus. This is also for people who are prone to hair loss obviously.
Please keep in mind the above is a very general summary of how all of this works and there are other things involved as well but this should be enough for most people.
Ok, so you want to get on the tren train and snort dbol all day... here are a few things that can potentially help:
-
Minoxidil with azelaic acid topical twice a day. Minoxidil works by opening up the blood vessels and letting more nutrients and potassium in. Azelaic acid works differently by helping prevent the binding of DHT to the hair follicles. There is a LOT of feedback about these working well together. You can buy these combined in 1 bottle.
-
Nizoral shampoo: Use this twice a week to every other day and let it sit in your hair while you shower. It works in a few days: anti inflammatory properties on scalp, lowering sebum secretion which clog up hair follicles, and the main reason, it's an anti-androgen. It stops DHT and androgen from binding to the androgen receptors.
-
Emu oil: This is another AR inhibitor and anti inflammatory. This has pretty great feedback for working in the front of the scalp, more so than most of the other things listed here.
-
Caffeine: This seems to promote hair regrowth when applied topically to the scalp, even in hair exposed to DHT.
-
Topical Spironolactone cream: This works a little different than the rest, in that instead of inhibiting or blocking off the receptors in one way or another, this actually binds to the receptors, so that the DHT cannot. This is available in a pill too but it is NOT meant for men. Topical only.
-- For items 2,3,4 you can easily find all 3 in 1 bottle of shampoo. I am not getting any compensation for this or anything but a very well reviewed one would be "Regenepure DR" at about $20-25 a bottle. Use it to wash the "horseshoe" danger zone and then some other shampoo for the rest if you want to make it last longer.
I know this sounds like a lot of stuff, and it is, but most of it can be found online pretty cheaply, some even on the sites hosted here. Hopefully this is helpful to people!

I'm really glad to be able to try to give something back. I've learned so much from these forums!
I ran a high test / low tren cycle previously and thought finasteride + dutasteride would be enough but it wasn't and I experienced significant thinning.. so I've been researching and experimenting heavily in the time since (over a year) and am about ready to start again on a test/tren/mast cycle in the near future with my new products and I'll keep this updated with how it goes.
Although not in your question avoid letro at all cost. Crashes oestrogen and thins hair like a mofo!
Estrogen helps with reducing body hair and increasing head hair.. but I think how this works is that the crashed estrogen allows the test (dht) basically run rampant and unchecked in the scalp. The shampoo I suggested or some finasteride should do the trick in this case.
e if u do a little google searching there's a guy who has a website dedicated to this topic and makes suggestions. I personally use shampoos which contain nizoral. Applying azeliac acid to my hairline did not stop master on from doing damage but it may help with other compounds. There's a new compound ou ppl are trying out, I forget the name I think begins with RU#####
Azeliac acid has a little bit of a reputation as a standalone blocker type thing, but it's got very mixed reviews. I suggest you use it with minoxidil to enhance the regrowth potential. I'd suggest Spironolactone for masteron or tren because it will clog your receptors and not allow the steroids to get to them.
Unfortunately spiro has drawbacks, it's a cream and can make your hair a little greasy looking, and it smells depending on the brand. Ideally you put it on at night. I'm going to use it just once a day, at night, on my next cycle coming shortly and will report the results. It will contain test prop, tren ace, and mast prop so hopefully I can give you some real life feedback then.
Solid post. I too am prone to MPB. Scares the hell out of me. I use Regenepure DR and NT every day. I also use .25 mg finasteride every day. I use 2 mg finasteride a day while on cycle. What dose finasteride do you use on and off cycle?
I'm not sure .25mg finasteride is enough? I'm taking 1mg a day, have been since 15+ years ago when that was prescribed to me. I think that's the average dose people take. There have been tests showing some effectiveness at lower doses but also showing that on average the higher the dose the more effective it is, up to a certain point.
How do you like the Regenepure and how long have you been on this regiment / how is your hair coverage?
I have been using the DR and NT every day for 6 months. Has slowed down my hairloss DRAMATICALLY. I haven't had any regrowth, though. I really wasn't expecting any regrowth though. The NT is the "cosmetic" part of the regenepure system. It makes hair look thicker. The DR is the "treatment" part of it. I lather in the DR and let it sit for 3 minutes then rinse and then use the NT. This has slowed down my hairloss and made my hair thicker
Yeah, the DR has the Nizoral in it - the good stuff. The NT has other hair friendly things but mainly for cleaning between since the DR one used too much will mess your scalp up. It's a great combo. Unfortunately alone it won't stop or reverse things in most cases. Awesome to hear that your hairloss has slowed so much from just that though!
Any plans to either raisethe finasteride, or add dutasteride, or minoxidil to the mix?
Yeah I plan on raising the finasteride to 1 mg a day. I'm just scared to death of the sides. I know that most of the sides actually come from a rise in estrogen since finasteride blocks dht and testosterone has to convert to something. So maybe a low dose of arimidex would eliminate that. But it's the small percentage of people that suffer the actual "complete shutdown" and the post finasteride syndrome and such that really scares me. Apparently, in a very minuscule amount of people, finasteride treatment can basically "turn off" our androgen receptors so our receptors no longer recognize androgens. This is where the finasteride horror stories come from
