+ 3 Training so hard you puke?

ad

I'm very familiar with this. I spent the better part of my life in a boxing gym. Countless hours training and preparing. Every now and then the trainers would bring in new strength & conditioning coaches with this new school of thought on fitness and they'd break us down to the point of absolute exhaustion. And just when we would feel like we would collapse , they'd yell and scream for us to push harder. Well sometimes it worked to motivate and other times I would just puke,... literally. I know this also happens in bodybuilding/powerlifting. When you push your body to its limits, something has to give. It's your body telling you to stop, that's enough. It would only happen to me when I had done something that I'd never done before and after a few sessions with that kind of training, I adapted and could go further. I'm sure it isn't healthy, but its not exactly going to kill you either. You'll pass out long before you die. So my question, how common is this? Has it happened to you? Ever felt like you were going to puke? Or pass out? How did you respond to it and did it make you stronger or weaker (mentally or physically) the next time out?

There's also a product called sportlegs that does a pretty good job at reducing lactic acid buildup. It's marketed toward cyclist

Perfect! That's what I was looking for. Thanks for the input bro. Learn something new every day.

Beta-Alanine also reduces lactic acid through buffering as well. It has to be dosed at or above 3,200 mg's a day though. I don't know if you knew that, but I figured I'd say something...

I didn't. Interesting. Is there any danger in preventing lactic acid build up? I mean it happens because your body is telling you that's enough ,but is there risk in pushing further?

I do know that when you push yourself to that extreme, blood is in high demand in the working muscles so its being shunted away from the stomach and if you do that for long enough and have any stomach content more than likely you're gonna puke

It's pretty normal for me. Especially while running in 95+ degree heat. Having said that, I try like hell to avoid it cause I hate puking, lol

During hell week, the cadres pt'ed us so hard I puked in my shirt. You can not puke on the pt field, after wearing my pt uniform for 3 more hours I had acid burns on my chest and stomach, that sucked.

Only happened to me once at the gym, and fortunately i made it off the floor and into the rest room...but i attribute it more to a pre-workout solution that didnt agree with me. But i am no stranger to puking from my triathlon days. Either from a couple gulps of salt water in the ocean (yeah, that's fun,) to eeking out those last miles on the run on a vicious hot day and having my stomach shut down. And to think I used to think it was fun...

Triathlete? Damn! You get nothing but respect from me for that bro. That's some hardcore shit!

I an working on a side by side picture to post...me, 10 years ago on the run at Ironman vs now. Despite swimming 7-10 miles a week at that time, I still only had a 38 chest...compared to 43 now.

I have only puked a few times from lifting, And that was from an intense circuit. But I dont know how many times I have puked Training. To many to count. Taking on something I shouldnt and cutting weight in a bad way. Puking, fainting. You name it I have been there with you.

That's exactly the point I'm trying to drive home. Someone very close to me thinks something is wrong with them because this has happened a few times. Even went to a doc to find out why. I told them its totally normal.

Back in my younger days every leg day I would be pushed to my limits ! Puking in the gym was very common for us! When your in the zone it's hard to get out. Now we have all those prework out drinks that just make it worse!! Physically it would make me weaker my legs are already spent now the shakes from puking ! I had to have many rides home from not being able to drive. Good post Nitti. !!
