Krav Maga

ad

Means "Contact Combat" in Hebrew. They've taken all the Useful elements of many different styles of martial arts. The striking from Muay Thai, Boxing, Tae Kwon do, karate. The grappling of the JuJitsu artist, the wrestler and Judo technitian. Applied all these things to Real life situations. They teach how to use and defend with/against any weapon. How to use things in your surroundings as a weapon. Lets be honest, when faced with a situation where you have to fight or flight, getting in a boxing stance will get me as far as throwing one punch. While I like to think that's all I need is one good shot, if i get grabbed and taken to the ground, i'm in trouble. I have spent the better part of 2 decades perfecting my craft. I am a 1 trick pony. While being trained at all in anything gives me the upper hand over the average joe , it's better to be better equipped in todays fucked up world. So have any of you trained in Krav Maga? If so how do you like it? I know there are ppl here from all over the world. There are soldiers here, shit even Navy Seals on eroids. Israeli Special forces teach Krav Maga to their men. I'm sure the Seals have been trained in this as well. So how about it? Anyone have any experience or insight into this? Here's a description.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds pretty bad ass! One of my trainers is getting into it and I'm probably going with him. I have 3 studios near me. I'm gonna be like Jason Bourne in this bitch. :-P

i saw a documentary on this and it included guys practicing getting kicked square in the balls with no cup. i mean like a football field goal kick. something about mind over matter. i dont care who you are thatd be cool as shit to be able to do that. you could bust it out at parties and stuff. be a hit.

Nitti's picture

Lol. Yeah, I call bullshit

EmeraldLaoch's picture

guess i need to find it then. it was show that explained like the top ten martial arts or something. One of them, pretty sure it was krav maga, showed how part of the art was pain displacement through mental trickery. these guys were straight up wailing on balls. no way i can make this stuff up. ill find it.

EmeraldLaoch's picture

Best i can do on short notice... i couldnt find the original show but heres another example of the same demonstration. Making egg salad at 45 seconds. ENJOY!

That sounds pretty similar to a style I learned about 20 years ago in the navy called Special Combat Reactionary System or S.C.A.R.S.. I think they discontinued the program in the late nineties. I don't know what they are teaching now.

ive been training martial arts since i was 17, krav maga is an israeli milatary form of fighting, we have a club here that teaches it and a mate of mine went along for 6 months 3 times a week. i train in zen do kai/muay thai kickboxing and bjj. i only used to do muaythai, but then i met this old guy in the local martial arts shop, he got me into bjj as most fights end up on the ground, i then looked into zen do kai wich is preety much freestyle kickboxing, it is more a street level form of fighting wich was invented mainly for security/bouncers/crowd controllers where the trainers take your style of fighting and teach you how to do it better, in all honesty i wouldnt worry about krav maga, its more of a fancy looking art like taekwondo than practical on the streets when your drunk you just want to know how to smash them quickly and if you get taken to the ground be able to protect/counteract the enimies moves.

I had someone from force recon train me and it looks like pretty similar stuff and I've seen him use it on people in real life situations and god damn did it work well.. he never specified on a style but more of taking what was functional and worked.. I think it would be something worth trying.. In fact now I want to find some classes near me haha

Yes like anything there are many water down versions of Krav Maga. The legit line of this combat system comes through Grandmaster Imi Sde-Or . I have had the pleasure of training and being trained by the IDF Israeli Defense Forces and I have personally worked with Eyal Yanilov and consider him a good friend. Any Krav Maga system that comes from this lineage is as legit as they can come. Not saying that there are not other talented operators in this system but this one I can personally recommend.

MMA is a sport and yes it can make you very skilled in self defense. Krav Maga would be considered the MMA of street and military combat. Why? Simply because it puts a large emphasis on defending against a gun and knife. Also teaching the offense of guns and knives! When learning true combat with a knife offense or defense the first thing a legit expert instructor will tell you is "plan on getting cut". Then you are shown on how to minimize the damage to a non critical blow. When people first go up against a knife bare handed they are tempted to avoid all damage and then they wind up giving away vital kill spots. So first you mentally learn how to offer a non lethal area to draw the knife to then you practice in having even that area not get struck. These are the things you will learn in Krav Maga along with many other vital self defense techniques.

Personally I like being the one bringing the gun to a knife fight and a knife to an empty hand fight! But unfortunately we do not always get those optimal circumstances.

Thanks Nitti for this great post!

That's exactly the sense I get when I read about it. I also saw a Nat Geo special on it. Actually a mini series called "Human Weapon". Krav maga is very very different than anything iv'e ever seen. Obviously not a sport. Life and death training. In this show they had the guys training in close quarters with no fire arm. In an apartment complex with ppl attacking at every corner. The objective was to get out of the building alive. Knives swung at them, baseball bats, pipes etc. They showed how you use every inch of your body as a weapon. How to disarm an enemy. Very cool shit!

Darktide's picture

Yes that was accurate the real Krav Maga is big on CQB (Close Quarter Battle). You know what else Nitti you will laugh when you see the footwork and evasive maneuvers because much comes from western boxing footwork and weaving. With your experience they would probably use you to teach your specialty. That is how we trained in Israel the exchanging and combining. Because it is meant to be an ever evolving flexible system. As combat evolves so must Krav Maga!

Thanks for the interesting take. It looks like you would have to change what you have been conditioned to do or what's instinctive in a defensive situation involving weapons. I suppose you would want to make sure the instructors have IDF training or experience in Krav Maga as a criteria if you were looking for a school. Anything else you can think of to look for to get the best training?

Darktide's picture

Yes that is true about changing instincts but I will tell you learning this becomes very easy because it is based on continuous repetition. IDF and especially the Sayeret, they are Israel's version of Navy SEALs. Feel free to run any of the schools that you are interested in by me and I will check out to make sure they are legit. But real Krav Maga puts a heavy emphasis on weapon disarmament and usage.

snuka2012's picture

great...i appreciate that.

kodiakGRRL's picture

I will tell you learning this becomes very easy because it is based on continuous repetition.

this is the key to any combat style worth its salt. Repition: and more repition: because what you repeat and practice is what you will do in an intensely stressful situation. this is the basis for training self defense, test taking, two minute drills, full court press etc etc etc.. people die because they don't practice simple things like dialing 911.
You do what you practice.

Darktide's picture

What you wrote should be the prologue for every book that inspires people to succeed. And yet is not the #1 thing that those who fail skip doing. There is no short cut to success. I can teach anyone who has full function of their faculties and members how to be a master marksman. But only they can make themselves into a master marksman through repetition. The SEAL drop out rate is 80% and higher when asking those who give up why, the largest answer is, "it is just to much bullshit" lol. For those who make it we call it repetition:)

Nitti's picture

Some things are like riding a bike. I am to the point where my training kicks in automatically. Like second nature. So I disagree. I may not be nearly as good as I once was. But i haven't forgotten.

Darktide's picture

Yes that is better said I should have read more carefully. You never lose what you know in only becomes duller if not practiced. Good catch.

Darktide's picture

Dead on!!

kodiakGRRL's picture

It is probably one of those truths in the world that is so simple and so over looked. When you see people freaking out or suceeding ...... it is what they practice and repeat. In the mental health field the working definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.

jpal's picture

Krav maga means( contact combat)

I am also interested in this, would love to hear from people who have trained

Nitti's picture

You're right. I stand corrected. I was misinformed. Nice catch

Double post

Cheatnnature's picture

My good friend from school teaches this to people for a living and he used to be that push around guy and ill tell you right now he is not a dude me and three other good fighters would not want to fuck with!!! Period!

Nitti's picture

Let me refine my questions. Is it worth the time? It looks very practical and a lot to do with reaction. I know from boxing that your training becomes second nature over time. Krav maga looks like A LOT to take in. Is it?

snuka2012's picture

I'm actually looking into a couple schools in my area for this. It looks like a practical self defense fighting style. It would be good to get some opinions on this.

bigjrock's picture

I have never trained with krav maga but it does look interesting. I would like to get back into some sort of fighting, self defense training. When I get the chance im going to look into this more.

FinMan's picture

I'm very interested as well. Thanks for posting this up. Hopefully we get some practitioners or the like.
