Going it solo

ad

OK guys, I'm throwing this out there to get good feedback to aid in my decision making process. I'm not asking people to think for me, and in the end, I own any decisions I make. So that out there I'm mulling about something I've been thinking about for quite some time and you guys know WAY more about the potential hazards than I, and if you see the landmines, please let me know.

Here's the deal. I'm 43, 6' 340, and about 33% BF. I've had a sedentary job for years as a travelling salesman. Eating and drinking WAY too much, not working out at all...and getting older. Prior to getting fat, I spent 15 years in the Army, played sports and up until I got my last job (the travelling one) I worked out regularly and played sports year-round. My diet was shit, but I was active. Well, 10 years behind a steering wheel or a desk and taking clients to steak houses and I turned into the stay-puffed marshmellow.

I quit my job and started working on getting my life back in order (in MANY ways). I've lost over 54 lbs of BF in the last 6 months and have another 90-100 to go. I'm eating super clean. I track my calories burned with a Bodybugg and I track my calories eaten, all five meals, like clockwork. When I started working out, I was doing OK, but it was a bitch to drag my ass to the gym. And going wiped me out. I knew it was more than just my body rebelling. I was also fairly depressed, which is NOT my normal state. I went to my regular doc, he took some blood and just told me I was "OK". I never saw the numbers (I was dumb). But I started researching it and found one of the VERY few HRT docs in my area (The Midwest US is slow to come around).

So I went to one. Got the test results and this time made sure I got a copy. My E2 was at 49 and my Dihydratestosterone was 13 and Total Test was 300. DHEA Sulfate and Vit D also low. My Test wasn't "clinicly" low, but low. So he put me on Test Cyp 200. Started at .75ml/week. Since bumped to 1 ml/wk. Also has me on Anostrolozole (sp?) at .25mg every 2 weeks. And since I started on it, I LOVE it. LOVE it. I feel more like "myself". I'm hitting it harder at the gym and the bedroom. Life is good, and my progress is picking up on the weight loss. Again, I'm not trying to look like Arnold. I'm just trying to get back to the body I had for most of my life, which was solid and fairly lean. And I'm on track to do that.

But here's my dilema. I'm thinking of ditching the doc and handling my own therapy. I think he served a purpose in helping me see how well it can work. Plus my wife is a nurse and by nature wouldn't have gone along with it otherwise (and she does my injections, as she's pretty darn good at it). But I think I'm getting raped, and I can't afford to keep shelling out this much money. Insurance isn't covering any of the stuff because to use the doc I'm using, I have to use his compounding pharmacy, which my insurance doesn't recognize.

And THAT pharmacy keeps charging me for pins, even though I've told them I've got my own. Every month, like clockwork, they send me 5 syringes and 10 needles at $1 ea. $15/month for pins. I got almost a years worth for $40! The 4ml/month is costing me $60. The generic Armidex is $50 for 15 .25 capsules. And seeing the doc is costing me about $250 every couple of months. At this point, all he does is ask a few questions and then try to put me on some overpriced supplements. He was sending me 30 .75mg DHEA for $50! Throw in the the Bio Energy, IGF-1 and other crap and he was sticking me for hundreds/month. I finally told him ENOUGH of the BS. I can get my own DHEA, and pins, and Vitamin D and pay a helluva lot less (but still get quality stuff, not the super cheap crap). All of that is over the counter, and his markup must be HIGH.

But I've kept the scrip, because, to this point, I was worried about the consequences of going solo. Legality and quality issues and the "what if" scenario. But I've looked at the last 6 months and with the labs, the initial visit and 2 follow up visits and for the Test Cyp and Armidex I've spent over $1800 to get 14ml of Test Cyp 200 and 15mg of Arimidex. Throw in the other crap he pawned on me before I decided enough was enough and it's several hundred more. Even after ditching it the extras, I've figured that with the minimum meetings he needs "to be safe" and JUST the test and arimidex, I'm looking at just under $2000/year to be "safe".

But I'm starting to look around and figure that 1) with the lurking I've done (even before registering) you guys seem to know a HELLUVA lot more about it than he does. (He mostly does rich middle-aged women and throws Estrogen Mixers...) He's clueless about lifting. COMPLETELY clueless and 2) I'd be better off to use a good supplier here and spend less than $500 and throw the rest in a contingency fund when and IF I need a good lawyer Smile

Anyway. I know this is a novel. But your thoughts on going it alone?
Looking around, it seems to me that at current levels of usage, I could save thousands of dollars a year that could be used elsewhere (you know, kids and all). The wife is now on board. She sees the difference in me with the TRT (and REALLY likes certain aspects of it!) and I've shown her the receipts. She's normally a "by the book" type, but even she's shaking her head at the numbers. So am I missing something?

Your story and mine are fairly similar, including years of neglect and getting fat. I have a mainstream insurance company and they did not want to prescribe test--only because they are cheap bastards, not because I did not need it.

I wont bore you with the blow by blow details, but I finally got a prescription. The reason I persevered is because I really wanted to have a legal reason to be in posession of this stuff. I travel often by air, so having a legal prescription for test and needles is really important. Even if I had nonprescription versions -mast, tren, etc., I could always claim I was on a trip and ran out of my prescription and bought what I though was the same thing. I know, lame, but I dont think busting middle aged steroid users is a priority for LE, so I suspect they would just let it go since I have a medically necessary reason for posession.

Also if you want your insurance company to provide you with a prescription covered by your plan, you just have to drive your Test numbers lower. Dont tell them you have been prescribed test by another MD. Just stop your shots, wait 4 weeks and go back for a retest of your test level. The test shots would have suppressed your natural test production and your number will be below their cut-off.

So if it was me, I would either get my insurance company to pay, or do it myself. I got a price from one of the more famous TRT "specialists" that advertises a lot on the internet and his prices were just stupid.

I would agree with graftman. except my GP Doc's idea of a healthy level and mine are two different things. so my point is i cant go to him cause hes gonnna want to do blood work and then kick me out of his office. Good luck to him.
Going to a real TRT doctor was just out of my options $ wise. Pins for example, shit i got 100 for $10. I think you are on the same program my cuz is on. Any how i would say this is the way to go. I only been doing it month but my gosh, i bet my test levels are at close to 1000. and DHEA, man i put that stuff up, dont need it. I do take a shit load of vitamins like a mens daily pack. I would suggest you go with a name brand UGL. and my experience is, not always but usually, you get what you pay for......And lesson two for me recently, dont spend/send more than you can afford to lose. Cause you never know.
PM me too, send a friend request to me and i accept and we can chat.
I know EXACTLY were you are at.

I agree. My doc was trying to get me to take the DHEA for $50. I told him he was nuts, I can get the same thing for a fraction of that price. And the pins were WAY overpriced, I agree. And you're right, my GP's idea of dealing with it is, "if it's not clinicly deficient, I can't deal with it". For him, it's not about optimal health, but dealing with it once it's broken. The thing is, for someone who let themself get so far out of shape, I have great cholesterol, great BP and I still have a lot of muscle tone. All in all, I'm fairly healthy. I'm just trying to get healthier. But I guess insurance doesn't cover that....

And on the not geting more than you can afford to lose, I hear ya. But at this rate, I could have a 50% success rate and STILL save money!

PM tread bro, he is the man when it comes to stuff like this Smile

Not my area but i can and will help you when you have a base sorted.

I will look him up. I'm not familiar with him, but I'll welcome the input! Thanks.

Sounds like you and I have a similiar story........That said, I would keep the access to legit testosterone if you have it. Supplement with UGL but have your base of pharma grade test. Think of how you feel, and think of the risk going backwards.
In the mean time keep shopping around for a family doc that is willing to just give you maintenance dose of the cyp and arimidex. There is NO reason for injectable cyp to cost that much. That or give the HRT doc a sob-finance story and see if he'd be willing to help you out.
So my advice is keep the legit test and supplement with UGL. That way you give yourself a safety net and extend the life of your script.

Sens55's picture

That's kind of what I had in mind. The doc has me in 200/1ml. He said he started me out low at .75 ml and would possibly bump me up to 1.5ml/week. But there's no way I'm paying $80 for 6ml/month. So I thought I'd tell him NOT to bump me, find a good UGL and use that as my bump until I have it all sorted out and go from there.

I tried my regular doc. He wouldn't touch it unless I was under 200. I have never been tested before all of this, but I'd be willing to bet my "normal" range was fairly high to begin with. My back up plan as far as he goes it when I go for my annual checkup to lay it out there (about the TRT doc) and hope that as a "fair accompl" he'll sign off on it. But knowing him, I'm not banking on it.

I DO want to keep the script if for no other reason than a CYA. But last week the TRT doc's nurse called to let me know my "prescription" was on it's way. I had already had my monthly package from the compounding pharmacy, so I wasn't sure what she meant. Turns out that some of the crap he pawned on me at the office, which was Bio Enrg C and IGF-1, were shipped for the low, low price of $95! I went NUTS! I was polite (as polite as I could be) when I told them to NEVER EVER EVER charge me without my express consent! The Test and the AI are online and I can see when it ships, I can pause it for a month or cancel altogether. This I never saw coming. So if that continues, I'm done.

Sounds like you need Dr Tread to stop by. Hopefully he will. For what it's worth I would go it alone in your situation as I have done anyway since in the UK we get no freaking help at all. Good luck

X2 brother. We have no choice but go it alone.

Yeh. You keep yourself in good condition so hopefully you wont be a burden on yourself, your relatives or the NHS. And what do you get? Sweet Fuck All! Smoke yourself to death or turn yourself into some fat lame lard arse and what do you get? Everything handed to you on a plate!! I'm not bitter and twisted about it though LOL
