Need Vet Advice
So about 3 years ago I was doing weighted sit ups on a yoga ball and over extended myself. I felt that lovely pinch in my lower back and almost dropped the plate on my face trying to get up. As I'm sure you can imagine the next two weeks we're just magical. Here is my issue though. No matter how light I go on deadlifts I always get that same pinch and I'm out of the game for a few days. I hate it because I know deadlifts are an essential compound lift and it's pretty discouraging to say the least. I've sent multiple videos from multiple angles to a friend who's a powerlifter and is strict on form. He can't seem to find an issue with my form. I keep my back straight and focus more on form than weight. If anyone has any advice I'd love to hear it!

Which vertebrae is it? I have a football injury from where i took a face ask in the back in a pileup. Whatever you do if you seek advise from a doctor, they say it will never heal and that you will require surgery to fix it. Locate exactly where the problem is and strengthen the muscles around it. I'm no doctor, but you probably have a slight disk protrusion that is rubbing against the two main nerves running next to your spine. It's like squished out. For me...it literally took years to feel better though i still have days where it hurts the same, few and far between. What worked for me is gradual stretching, i loved the feeling of an inversion table and just hanging letting the pressure off of my spine. After a while i started with NO weight to build my core strength back up and now i'm fine. This is after i was told i need surgery ect it will never heal ect. First thing is first, pinpoint the problem through soft tissue scans and rays. Get your pro medical advise because you can make this a permanent problem or agrivate it.
Joey this might sound a bit stupid mate but have you ever or do you ever have a deep tissue sports massage?????
I used to suffer with a bad back and trapped nerve untill this was recommended by a physio....I could literally feel her rubbing knots out of my back worked wonders for my bad back.
Just a sagestion buddy
I'll definitely be checking that out. Did some physical therapy at my chiropractors office and he said it felt like something had slipped and caused it to lock up but without xray's or an mri he couldn't say more than he did. I was going to get a deep tissue massage after I felt better because I have a lot of tension in my traps too which causes them to constantly stay up and I need them to release lol. Thanks for reminding me bro!
unreal89I have the same problem with deads or any lower back tried even the machine so form was good and im out for 2-3 weeks cant even pick my 9 month old baby girl up so i just eliminated it yeah i wont get the lower back i wanted but oh well
I mean I can do good mornings and stuff but as far as deadlifts I have to throw in the towel. Sex was totally a bad idea btw.
I would recommend trying to see a Sports doctor if possible. It sounds like you need X-rays and MRIs to check for any structural damage to the area. Based on those results I would do it shva said below and try to see if Physical Therapy can help. I've been to chiropractor and physical therapist for different injuries. They each have their place I would say they're both essential to proper body function restoration of health. No one on this forum will be able to pinpoint the issue for you, but in the meantime you should try to work around it in ways that don't aggravate it.
Yea I gotta wait until my new insurance kicks in. The diagnostics will be pretty expensive at the 15% coinsurance I have now. I'll be fine in a day or so but I have to stay away from deadlifts until I can pinpoint the issue.
That will be rough on the wallet, but if you can swing it then go for it so you know your spine is good. Deads are my favorite so I feel your pain but it's not worth possibly causing permanent damage to yourself.
Yup just got laid and it was a horrible idea. On the plus side, I had to stop my cycle and am still waiting on pct stuff. It's been 4 weeks and definitely no ed issues just a slight decrease in libido. Gotta stay optimistic and count the wins too I guess.
It sucks man, I tor the annulus between L4 and L5 and a few discs above it are bulging now too and I havent been able to deadlift since. Deads really are a great exercise, they made everything grow, all back, traps, bis, legs etc. I miss them, it was one exercise that I was actually really strong on. Im just glad that the years leading up to it I did them religiously atleast once a week alot of times twice a week so i build a pretty decent base before I had to give them up. Realy havent found a alternative, I do alot of barbell rows, theyre great, but theres nothing that smashes the lower back and just everything like deadlifts.
I hope it's nothing serious and I can do other exercises to strengthen the area and in time to be able to do them again.
in would go see a quality physical therapist. there may be an issue that needs to be addressed.
I watch many experienced lifters still deadlifting wrong. I would definitely get evaluated before trying anything else.
many guys who have been in the game long enough have an issue with one part of their body or another which forces them to eliminate a specific movement or two.
as far as back issues, I have one myself. I have to be careful with deadlifting and squat heavy. after working with a very knowledgeable trainer I realized how wrong I was doing certain movements. after allowing my back to heal, incorporating certain accessory movements and deadlifting properly, I am able to do them.
as previously mentioned though, have a professional evaluate your before anything else.
I have a very good chiropractor who actually gives a shit about people and I go to him 3 times a week to fix a twisted vertebrae in my neck which is causing a ridiculous amount of allergy issues for me. my next appointment is tomorrow and I will address it with him since part of his clinic is also physical therapy.
Thanks for the response! it seems like this issue is strictly isolated to deadlifts and its always the same spot. I never even have issues with squats. But I will be taking your advice and addressing it with the doc tomorrow. Thanks bro!
Life goes on without deadlifts. If you can't do them or they don't feel right, don't do them and risk a more serious injury.
Are there alternatives that can work the lower back the same? I try to do good mornings and back extensions but I would love to know some alternative exercises. I don't want to be limited in that regard.
