+ 2 Favorite exercise for chest growth
ad
Let’s hear it. I’m apparently terrible at growing my chest.
We doing high reps or weight? What works for you?

Favorite... I just like getting on any various chest machines/stations... I do 1 warm up set, light, stretch everything out, maybe 50 reps. Then ill do 1 set and max out at 7 or 8. Then ill usually hit push ups to failure, a couple sets of dips to failure. And be out.
Least favorite but best for growing a big chest... dumbell presses incline/decline/flat. I actually enjoy decline.
Im lazy and more worried about injuries these days. I tore my rotator cuff so I stick to alot of machines for chest. always good to hit some pushups to failure after
What a lot of guys are saying in here is true but what helped me the most is sort of against what many might say but don’t retract your scapula or your shoulders. Keep your torso stacked and don’t pop your chest out. When you do this it cucks your rom and breathing. Look up rib compression. It’s worked wonders for me.
My upper chest blew up when I lowered the weight. Contracted my shoulders an almost imagined trying to bend the bar by pushing inwards as I push up.
Again it’s easy for those front delts to take over.
Incline bench lower weight higher reps until you have good mind muscle connection.
Also any kind chest press is easier for targeting the chest.
I also love cable flys, seated tho so you can really focus on working the muscle an not stabilizing yourself. Not saying they are bad, just personal preference
Shake weight
Brother, chest is a muscle like any other muscle. It’s honestly not one of the hardest muscles to activate neurologically compared to things like upper/lower back, lats, glutes or hamstrings where people struggle badly with connection and proper recruitment.
What really makes muscles grow is pretty simple at the end of the day:
mechanical tension
enough time under tension
proper frequency/recovery balance
and most importantly proximity to failure (or failure itself)
That’s what creates the hypertrophy stimulus. Your body adapts to external stress or it gets left behind.
Now HOW you apply those principles can vary a lot:
low volume, high volume, high intensity, moderate intensity, higher reps, lower reps
There’s multiple roads to Rome.
Dorian Yates built one of the craziest physiques ever with low volume/high intensity.
Jay Cutler trained with insane amounts of volume and also maxed out his physique.
Different systems… same outcome:
they trained HARD and progressed consistently.
Let’s say you have 2 upper days weekly, you can play with angles/exercise selection like:
A)
* Bench press
* Pec deck fly
* Low cable fly (Dorian style)
A1)
* Incline bench
* Dumbbell fly
* Chest dips
The amount of top sets (usually somewhere around 5-12 reps to cover lower to moderate rep ranges) and total exercises will depend on YOUR recovery capacity and necessities.
But for real…. for most people:
2-3 chest exercises per session is already more than enough.
And this is important:
if you increase intensity massively, volume usually has to come down.
If you increase volume too much, intensity usually drops.
Trying to max out BOTH all the time is a great way to fry your CNS and accumulate useless fatigue.
That’s why proximity to failure matters so much IMO. You can train many different ways… just make sure you’re actually training HARD enough.
Eat hard.
Train hard.
Recover hard.
Pin hard… I mean…responsibly.
Eventually your chest will have no option other than grow, assuming genetics aren’t completely trolling you
Well said as always brother!
One thing I’ve always been curious about is how people who are born without specific muscles and/or have to have entire muscle beds removed feel that “mind muscle connection” we all know and love. I wonder how it physically feels trying to flex something that isn’t there. Possibly similar to the “ghost” feelings people experience after losing limbs? I assume most still have the necessary nerves, tendons, etc. to signal, but it has to be strange for your brain to send “flex” signals and have nothing there to contract!
After I recently saw child who had Poland syndrome (missing or undeveloped muscle(s) on one side of the body often pec/shoulder) who was completely missing his right pec and had little to nothing on his right arm it spurred my curiosity.
That ghost effect stuff always keeps me wondering too brother.
Some people get so neurologically attached to lost limbs or structures that they still feel:
cramps, pressure, pain, even “muscle contractions” when nothing is physically there anymore.
That shit is wild lmao
Makes you wonder how much of the mind-muscle connection is actually the muscle itself… and how much is just the brain/nervous system mapping everything internally.
Poland syndrome is fascinating for that exact reason. Like does the brain eventually “accept” the missing muscle and remap itself… or does part of the nervous system keep trying to send signals forever?
Human body/neuro stuff is crazy man.
Just lighten up squeeze the guy who got 10th place at the wheel chair mr Olympia works out at my gym his chest chest delts are amazing the tie ins ..anyway he just says volume frequency mund muscle the weight does add to growth but he said it's most activation and then being able to add funds for real full development so I agree with what he said I'm just parroting it for you
My chest started exploding when I started dumbbell flat press but one thing I did was drop the weight and slow the reps way down. My chest really started to grow then, continue experiencing different techniques that work for you all the best.
bicep curls
Where's our GURU when we need him? We need a bat signal... the panda signal.
Dips.
Issues with chest develop are often due to poor lifting mechanics and or poor mind muscle connection.
If you have trouble feeling chest & getting it to grow. Go back to basics. Lighten the weight. Focus on great posture, breathing, chest up, shoulders back, and proper arm positions.
As per favorite excercises.
Incline cable flys is almost a perfect exercise as you can get. A great stretch at the bottom of the movement , full contraction at the top along w constant tension the entire movement. Nice and slow at the bottom , keep the weight tight with no jerking. At the top, cross the handles and squeeze as hard as you can. Then release and control the negative.
The chest will be under constant tension with a tremendous stretch at the bottom and then a full contraction at the top.
Its a great finisher. Also it is great to develop the mind muscle connection for the chest.
Hope this helps
Regardless of exercise I noticed the most growth when I dropped the weight and focused on the stretch and squeeze, slow negatives and time under tension. Lower the weight or try and find a new exercise where you can really feel your chest working. Or not, maybe heavy weight is how you grow. Everybody is different gotta see what works for you
I think this, plus a couple different movements, might be the direction I try.
Incline dumbell flys at 30 degrees, one warm up set at 50% effort for like 15 to 20 reps just till i feel the blood moving then 3 working sets of 8 to 12 and then a dropset to failure for the 4th , I got a wide ass chest and that one really gives me that burn
Dumb bell bench press, incline bench press with dumbbells, Cable flys low to high flys, medium height fly and high height fly, decline bench press. Fly machine.. I have a nice chest just saying...
For sure the decline press is way underrated and forgot to mention helped my chest tremendously also shoulders felt safe and stable without any pain or discomfort. Great advice there my brother
This is right here.
I have always like incline for a shelf. Flys have been incorporated back into my routine and I believe they are extremely important when done right. I don’t think many stretch the muscles enough or hit enough angles.
Gainz411If done twice a week would you do dumbells one day and cables the other day? Fly machine both days or just the day you do dumbells?
Exactly this right here
I am at the gym two hours or more a day and I do it all the same day I basically only take a day off when I need one and I rotate the muscle groups each day.
Gainz411That motivates me to push myself more. I work construction 8-10 hours a day then workout 6 days a week for 90 mins. I think it takes a lot more the people think to become over trained.
8 to 10 hours?! You must be part time!
Gainz411Haha!
Jrihard8915-30 degree incline smith machine press.
Smith over barbell. If it’s strictly size smith is best. Easier to control and focus on just contraction.
Too many put the bench on an incline too much too. And puts more stress on front delt
Upward cable flies. Another upper pec movement.
Chest can be done with 4 movements. A upper press, upper fly, downward fly, downward press. Downward press can be flat bench or dips and such.
You need to know how ton back shoulders but not roll the back too much. John Jewett has YouTube videos really doing a good job explaining. Or meadows
Gainz411Great advice. Thanks for sharing.
Smith machine is for pussies
Or dudes with shoulders injuries….. I can only do press with smith, my stabilizer muscles are fucked from RTC injuries/shoulders
Then try dumbbells and not the pussy machine. Use less weight and build the stabilizers up.
@-infidel- is a pretty big dude. I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing.
I dont think he is by what he is telling me.. he said he is what he eats.. so pussy, he ate my nut because I nut in pussy
Really I am just getting ya all fired up, I really dont care, I dont use the smith machine but I do use a combination of stuff like the bench barbell and dumbbells.. There is more than one way to build up the chest and lots of different exercises.
Whathappened2018im not a chicken!!! your a turkey!!
I like the banter.. and yes, I would love to do dumbbell press.. I miss it so much actually (sniff sniff). It’s the exercise “that got away”
@OlympusBorn come nag me some more you little bitch
Someone negging you? Here’s a plus one to counter lol
Lol did you dip into some tren aggie
LMAO, I actually have one dose left of Tren and I was told I am not to ever get on it again.. so I guess I will stick to mast and DHB after this haha.
That’s hilarious. I tried tren once when I was way too young to be touching this shit. That was roughly 20 years or so ago. I haven’t touched it since. I’ve been contemplating it, but NPP has turned me into a cold son of a bitch. So I just keep telling myself I’m asking for trouble if I even touch the shit. Big sad face.
Lol damn Aggie. You on a heater today hahaha
Yeah most of this was just joking around but Olympus.. he a bitch
Yea buddy. I just commented on the same thing. Love me some barbell, but my right shoulder don't lol
Same. My shoulders are rough. The smith is one of those tools I need to work with what I’ve got. Don’t get old, kids
...and that makes you a what? LMAO.. JK
Lol why smith machine for pussies?
Because guys use it when they dont have their stabilizer muscles built up and the bar is fixed position and they get scared of some weight so they need their "safety" machine. I always see weak skinny broccoli heads on the smith machine but I guess it's as good place to start as a beginner.
Yes.. 90% of the dudes using them are small and weak.. however, at those those dudes are in the gym
I was at the gym yesterday, this obese dude came it. I saw him and thought, well.. at least he is here. Then he sat on the bike for 15 minutes, cruising like he was riding with his grandma. Left after 20 minutes… disgusting fat body
This is all funny as hell to me. I’ll put in the work, I’ll take the criticism, none of that matters. I’m just looking for ways to do it better.
Hopefully the big guy finds the kick in the ass he needs. I was fat in the gym once but I was spending a lot longer than 20 minutes in there.
Ohhh I’m on the smith machine a lot… I wasn’t knocking that. I wasn’t even knocking the fat guys working hard…. I’m knocking the dudes who go to the gym and don’t even try, there’s a bunch of skinny fucks doing the same
