Do Solvents Really Erode Stoppers/Which Solvents?/After How Long?

ad

What's up guys. This is something that I've never really thought about much in the past, but the more I hear about it, the more curious I am. That is, do the solvents, or other ingredients in gear vials, rot or erode the rubber stoppers, and which ones are more prone to doing so, and after how long?? Most importantly, does it actually liquify parts of the stoppers , to where it can be sucked up through a syringe and end up being injected into your body?

One solvent that I'm particularly interested in learning some more about is Ethyl Oleate, since it seems to be a popular ingredient used by many different UGL's these days, and especially by a couple of my favorite UGL's! Or, what about Miglyol 814, MCT, or other popular oils? Also, how long would these oils and solvents take to erode these stoppers.

I figure, the best way to prevent this from occuring, is to keep your vials standing upright when storing them. From now on, no matter how long I'm storing any gear, I'm going to make sure to keep the vials upright, just to be safe!

Anyhow, if anyone has any further information on this topic, or anything they would like to add, I'd really like to hear what you think about this. Especially, what you guys know about Ethyl Oleate eroding rubber stoppers. Looking forward to your thoughts and comments! Thanks guys!

Yep, they do.
higher BA (mixes and/or high mg per ml) %'s plus a poorly crimped stopper will see damage a some point. See my pic. The underside was extremely eroded (just couldn't get a pic of it on the mobile).

Butyl is generally considered good for stoppers though.

Though this post is old id like to post a link to my experience with old gear. It can happen but to what degree, ratios, solvents used etc are all factored.

I admittedly keep most of my gear on its side. But most of my gear is just MCT or Myg with BA&BB. Haven’t had an issue yet.

But I have a couple bottles of TNE with guaiacol and they are not with the others on their side. I keep them in a different spot standing up just to be safe cuz I’ve been seeing KMC preach about it for a couple years now.

I think I’m gonna switch to an essential oil box instead of my tackle box tho so I can keep everything standing up. Haven’t had an issue yet but why risk it?

In terms of timescales I don't think there's any way really of knowing how long it will take to erode - only the other day I had drawn up some test prop and left it in the bathroom to be added to in a few hours. Literally 3 hours later it had started to eat the stopper and was jamming and scraping in the barrel! That was with good gear and good syringes also...

The quality of the stopper would play into it. The big pharma companies (NOT UGL) would know from extensive testing which solvents affect which stopper materials, and the stoppers they use would be for lack of another word "pharma" quality. Not all stoppers are made to the same standards (cough, China, cough).

First time i hear this. Out of curiosity i checked my stash (stored for more than 2 years, and in horizontal position). I fail to see any kind of erosion on the stopper.

The vials are sustanon and deca, UGL. I dont plant to run them anytime soon but i’d say they are good to go

I guess the way to go are ampoules.

Manshit's picture

I’ve never had an amp breaker.Ive always been afraid of injecting small pieces of glass.

KMC's picture

little pieces of glass going into your vein accidentally!

STOP !!!

Please Google ""I.M." as in inter-muscular, if you are injecting into veins, you are doing it wrong.

Agreed.I always use syringe filters when using amps anyway. It been a long time since I got amps though .

Or just store your viles properly (upright).

I dont know if oils can detroy stoppers, it depends on which material is used I think.

Store your vials always upright , then you're on the safe side and never buy too much stock.

never buy too much stock.

You’ve just gone way down in my estimations big man.

Lol... I’m getting bloods done Monday. The nurse asked me if I ran out of test. I laughed really hard and said, “what kind of question is that! I have more than your pharmacy.” I just need a script woman!

Yep. The wife just said don't you already have enough. I said I'll never have enough.

GrowMore's picture

If she keeps up with crap like that leave her and move in with me bro. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

fusebox's picture

To be fair she said oh ok. Go ahead and get some more. But I will keep that in mind lol

I only see silicone and butyl, which is rubber, stoppers. The silicone should not degrade, since it is a synthetic.Still storing gear upright will help preserve.

How would a medical professional store these products?

Would you ever see a veterinarian reach for a vial of medicine that was not stored standing properly upright ?

vhman's picture

I recently found several bottles of test-e that had been stored in their side for over a year. When I popped the cap, oil had leaked through the stopper. The oil had eaten through the silicone stopper on all of the Bottles. Had to throw them all in the trash.

vhman's picture

I don’t know exactly what was in it. It was from a great source that I use for my TRT. I was shocked that the oil had leaked, but it does happen. Bummed I had to throw them all out, but I wasn’t going to take a chance.
The stopper was silicone and looked fine, but there was significant leakage.

Since BA is acidic (even if only slightly) I would assume it would dissolve a stopper over time. Some stoppers have different chemicals in them that would make them more resistant. Even the metal crimp can dissolve. After all acids eat stuff. Think sugar in soda eroding tooth enamel.

As for the oil itself I don’t think there would be any decay since acids are polar and oil is non polarized. The solute (ex. Test, HGH, vitamins) would decay if there is an acid present because of polarity. I’d assume this is why there is an expiration date on vials. I wouldn’t assume it’s because of rancidity since that requires oxygen and that would have to come from a loose cap, some sort of chemical reaction, or having used the vial in the past and there was enough oxygen pumped in for drawing and it sat there for long enough to cause the reaction.

Don’t quote me on this it’s been a long while since chemistry class but based on what I can remember this is what makes sense to me.

Yeah I read that thread already. Seems the answer to the question was already available: store it upright just in case. I’m a science guy I like to know the how’s and whys of everything so I thought I’d offer up a little of what could be goin on in there. Always good to learn something everyday

JARHEAD2's picture

Yes sir, absolutely. I’m not sure the time span, but I always store mine upright as a preventative.
